  17. <p>    Ted Turner has a novel solution for global problems: since
  18. the planet's future is too important to be left to scientists,
  19. give writers a chance to see what they can do. And to inspire
  20. them, the media captain and boss of CNN announced last week that
  21. he was offering rewards for the best literary work with themes
  22. ensuring survival and prosperity. "We're floundering around as
  23. a species right now," says Turner. The world will be a better
  24. place for the winner. The modestly named Turner Tomorrow Awards
  25. carry a first prize of $500,000, the biggest cash award ever for
  26. a work of fiction.
