- in New York City. A finalist for the Oscar of the publishing
- industry on two previous occasions, Vidal won the nonfiction
- award for United States: Essays 1952-1992, a collection of acute,
- acerbic pieces on American life, letters and politics. Sharing
- honors with Vidal were E. Annie Proulx, fiction winner for The
- Shipping News, and A.R. Ammons, who won the poetry prize for
- the second time, this year for his collection Garbage.
