  15. <p>Are water pills risky?
  16. </p>
  17. <p>    When a patient has high blood pressure, the first drug most
  18. doctors prescribe is a diuretic. By accelerating the loss of
  19. water and sodium from the body, these medications help lower
  20. blood pressure and thus decrease the risk of stroke, congestive
  21. heart failure and kidney failure. But a Swedish study released
  22. last week provides new evidence that so-called water pills may
  23. increase the danger of diabetes and heart attacks.

  25. <p>    Reporting in the New England Journal of Medicine,
  26. researchers found that when hypertensive patients were given the
  27. popular diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, their ability to
  28. metabolize the sugar glucose dropped 11% and their blood levels
  29. of cholesterol and fats rose 5% and 15%, respectively. The
  30. researchers stress, however, that there is no proof to date that
  31. diuretics have raised the actual incidence of diabetes or heart
  32. attacks.

  34. <p>    Nonetheless, the new findings have intensified debate about
  35. whether diuretics should remain a first-line option for
  36. treating high blood pressure. Many doctors support continued
  37. widespread use, arguing that newer, alternative drugs are more
  38. expensive and that their long-term side effects have not been
  39. as well established. But others are pressing for more restricted
  40. use of water pills. At the least, say some, patients who have
  41. diabetes probably should not be taking diuretics.
