  17. </p>
  18. <p>     Breaking with millenniums of tradition, Reform Judaism last
  19. week became the first major U.S. religious body to adopt a
  20. national policy that sanctions homosexual behavior. "All Jews
  21. are religiously equal regardless of their sexual orientation,"
  22. reads a new statement approved by Reform rabbis. While
  23. heterosexual marriage was declared to be the "ideal," same-sex
  24. relationships were deemed acceptable for those with no
  25. "conscious choice" but to be homosexual. The statement also
  26. welcomes "all rabbis regardless of sexual orientation," asking
  27. gay clergy for "discretion," not celibacy. Local synagogues
  28. were urged not to probe the sexuality of rabbinical candidates.
  29. Samuel Karff, the Reform rabbis' president, explained that his
  30. denomination weighs "not only the sacred text of Torah but also
  31. the knowledge of our own time and experience."
