  15. It's Still the Lost Squadron

  17. <p>     When a cluster of five Navy Avenger planes was found off the
  18. coast of Fort Lauderdale last month, salvage experts were sure
  19. they had at last found Flight 19. Known as the Lost Squadron,
  20. its disappearance in 1945 had helped launch the legend of the
  21. Bermuda Triangle. Preliminary evidence seemed to support the
  22. experts' conclusion: the identifying numbers of two of the
  23. planes were the same, as was the number of downed aircraft.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     But in a surprise about-face last week, high-tech
  26. salvagers who found the planes announced they were not the Lost
  27. Squadron after all. They appeared to be five separate aircraft
  28. that had crashed within 1 1/2 miles of each other on individual
  29. training missions. Still, Graham Hawkes, who headed the search,
  30. resisted the legend of the Triangle. "I don't know where Flight
  31. 19 is," he said. "But it's certainly in the ocean and not up
  32. with the aliens anywhere."
