  17. <p>    A dozen Soviets landed in Washington last week, but they
  18. were not mere tourists. Veterans of the Soviet war in
  19. Afghanistan, they came through an exchange that has also taken
  20. some 50 American Viet Nam veterans to the Soviet Union. The
  21. program has achieved profound communions between men who thought
  22. of themselves as enemies. In Moscow, after a Soviet vet ripped
  23. open his shirt to reveal a wound caused by a U.S. machine gun,
  24. a Viet Nam veteran displayed a leg wound inflicted by a
  25. Soviet-made mine. Suddenly, the strangers sensed, as American
  26. Larry Oswald put it, that they were "in many ways brothers."
  27. Said Soviet veteran Sasha Karpenko: "We feel ourselves part of
  28. those who died in Viet Nam. This is our mutual tragedy."
  29. </p>
  30. <p>    Last week Danny Reed took Igor Morozov, 23, to the Viet Nam
  31. Veterans Memorial. They found the name of Reed's friend Ivan
  32. Smith, killed in 1965. Morozov tenderly ran his fingers over the
  33. engraved name and left a carnation there. The two veterans
  34. embraced, then walked away.
