  17. <p>     California politicians are planning to move up their
  18. state's primary date from June to March in an attempt to muscle
  19. in on the kingmaking power Iowa and New Hampshire enjoy during
  20. presidential-election years. An early-bird contest would be
  21. likely to force Democratic candidates to give short shrift to
  22. the two smaller states so contenders could focus on California's
  23. wide-ranging constituencies and demonstrate national appeal.
  24. Willie Brown, Democratic speaker of the California assembly,
  25. hopes to schedule the primary on the first Tuesday in March,
  26. which would position it just a week before the "Super Tuesday"
  27. group of Southern primaries.

  29. <p>     Brown disputes the current notion that few Democrats are
  30. willing to run against George Bush next year. The local party
  31. says it has received feelers from Senators Bill Bradley of New
  32. Jersey, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Tom Harkin of Iowa,
  33. as well as Virginia Governor Doug Wilder and Jesse Jackson.
