  17. <p>     The day of reckoning approaches for William Kennedy Smith.
  18. The 30-year-old med-school student, a nephew of Senator Ted
  19. Kennedy, surrendered to police in Palm Beach, Fla., on Saturday,
  20. to face charges that he raped a 29-year-old woman on the family
  21. estate over Easter weekend. In a nine-page affidavit that
  22. described the alleged crime in clinical detail, Palm Beach
  23. County state attorney David Bludworth filed one charge of sexual
  24. battery, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 4 1/2 years
  25. in prison, and a misdemeanor charge of battery.

  27. <p>     Court documents also indicate that Senator Kennedy may
  28. have whisked his nephew out of town on Easter Sunday to shield
  29. him from a police interrogation about the incident and that the
  30. Senator himself ignored requests to speak with investigators.
  31. The Kennedy camp last week indignantly denied suggestions of
  32. impropriety. But police chief J.L. Terlizzese said his men were
  33. "definitely misled" and that the department was looking into why
  34. residents in the Kennedy home had not made themselves available
  35. to detectives.
