  16. <p>A powerful Republican Congressman is charged with accepting
  17. bribes
  18. </p>
  19. <p>    There aren't many congressional bodies more powerful than the
  20. House Appropriations Committee, a fat channel through which
  21. billions of dollars in federal contracts flow. A federal grand
  22. jury charged Representative Joseph McDade, a 15-term
  23. Congressman from Pennsylvania and the committee's ranking
  24. Republican, with greasing that channel for some special friends
  25. in return for $100,000 in bribes.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>    The indictment states that, during a five-year period in
  28. the 1980s, McDade accepted money, air travel, use of vacation
  29. houses, even a golf umbrella from five manufacturers in exchange
  30. for help in obtaining defense contracts. Among the companies
  31. seeking favors were Sperry (now Unisys), Grumman and United
  32. Chem-Con, a now defunct contractor based in Lancaster, Penn.
  33. McDade -- who ran unopposed for his party's renomination two
  34. weeks ago and won the Democratic nomination as well on a
  35. write-in vote -- denied the charges, saying the investigation
  36. had turned his life into "a living nightmare."
