- <p> Back home, Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, a leader in
- "world music," drives a luxury car and cannot walk the streets
- without drawing a crowd. But in New York City he moves unnoticed
- and stays at modest hotels. Now filmmaker Spike Lee's new
- record label is releasing an N'Dour album, Eyes Open, that may
- finally introduce U.S. listeners to the versatile voice and
- richly textured rhythms familiar from France to Japan. "It will
- be a challenge to see if we can get African Americans to buy his
- music," says Lee. "It's kind of sad -- white college kids were
- hip to reggae and Bob Marley way before the black masses."
