  18. <p>     With the approach of Passover, supermarkets are carrying
  19. abundant supplies of matzo, the unleavened bread consumed
  20. during the Seder ceremony as a reminder of the Jews'
  21. tribulations under Pharaoh and their flight from Egypt. But
  22. last week a federal grand jury declared that the holiday price
  23. of matzo has not been kosher.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     In an indictment handed down in Newark, the Government
  26. charged that the B. Manischewitz Co., the largest U.S. matzo
  27. baker, conspired with other firms to fix the price of products
  28. worth $25 million from 1981 to 1986. Jersey City-based
  29. Manischewitz is accused of exploiting the increased demand for
  30. matzo during the eight-day holiday by arranging "agreed-upon
  31. increases" for a variety of matzo items. Manischewitz denies
  32. the charges, saying its prices were "independently and fairly
  33. determined."
