- <p> When Commander Deborah Gernes, 39, joined the Navy 15 years
- ago, women were rarely allowed aboard ship. Now it looks as
- though Gernes will be the first Navy woman to command one. She
- is among 87 officers designated as prospective skippers. Due to
- receive a posting in 1991, she downplayed her historic role,
- saying, "I expect to have other women follow right behind me."
- One disappointment: women are still barred from combat.
