  17. <p>    Never one to create a dull character, Peruvian novelist
  18. Mario Vargas Llosa has outdone himself in nonfiction. The plot: a
  19. distinguished South American writer enters politics, though he
  20. considers it a "dirty kid of thing." Starting at the top, he
  21. runs for the presidency of his country, beleaguered by guerrilla
  22. skirmishes, food shortages and Andean inflation. The real-life
  23. protagonist: Vargas Llosa. Even before his official April
  24. nomination, the author of The Real Life of Alejandro Mayta
  25. (1986) and eight other novels leads in opinion polls. At a Lima
  26. rally, thousands of supporters enthusiastically cheered his
  27. declaration, "I am the hope for Peru."
