- <p> Never one to create a dull character, Peruvian novelist
- Mario Vargas Llosa has outdone himself in nonfiction. The plot: a
- distinguished South American writer enters politics, though he
- considers it a "dirty kid of thing." Starting at the top, he
- runs for the presidency of his country, beleaguered by guerrilla
- skirmishes, food shortages and Andean inflation. The real-life
- protagonist: Vargas Llosa. Even before his official April
- nomination, the author of The Real Life of Alejandro Mayta
- (1986) and eight other novels leads in opinion polls. At a Lima
- rally, thousands of supporters enthusiastically cheered his
- declaration, "I am the hope for Peru."
