  17. <p>    The American Medical Association calls it a "drug delivery
  18. device." The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. touts it as a "cleaner
  19. smoke." The product in dispute is Premier, RJR's so-called
  20. smokeless cigarette, which the A.M.A. contends should be
  21. federally regulated. The feud has been fanned by a recent issue
  22. of the Journal of the A.M.A., which portrays Premier as a
  23. product that fosters nicotine addiction.

  25. <p>    The most sensational charge in J.A.M.A. is contained in a
  26. letter from researchers who claim that Premier, a cigarette-size
  27. cylinder that heats tobacco rather than burns it, can be used
  28. to smoke crack, the cocaine derivative. That one has lit a fuse
  29. at RJR. Last week research head G. Robert Di Marco attacked the
  30. accusations in J.A.M.A. as "distortions to further the political
  31. goals of its parent organization."
