  16. <p>     THEOLOGY LESSON. Sammy Davis Jr. turned heads at the
  17. N.A.A.C.P.'s Image Awards ceremony last month by thanking Jesus
  18. for standing by him during a bout with throat cancer. Some
  19. wondered if Davis, who converted to Judaism in the 1950s, had
  20. become a born-again Christian. Not so, says Davis. He was so
  21. overcome by the sea of black faces that he "immediately went
  22. back to my upbringing. My grandmother used to go around saying
  23. `Thank Jesus.' It's more of a black thing to  say `Praise
  24. Jesus' than a religious thing or a denominational thing."
