  15. The Boys' Club Pays Its Dues

  17. <p>    When Martha Page went to work as a trainee for Chicago's
  18. Harris Trust, she soon learned that "all the women were
  19. required to type and the men were not." Recalls another former
  20. Harris employee, Fran Hurwitz, who worked 15 years as a clerk:
  21. "Harris was your basic boys' club." Both women left the bank
  22. during the mid-1970s, but last week they got a measure of
  23. satisfaction when Harris settled a twelve-year-old Government
  24. suit charging the bank with race and sex discrimination.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>    Without admitting guilt, Harris said it would pay $14
  27. million in back wages to thousands of workers. Nancy Kreiter,
  28. research director for a women's advocacy group that helped push
  29. the lawsuit, called the settlement "a fabulously sweet
  30. victory." But even before last week's decision, the bank had
  31. come a long way. In 1977 Harris had five women vice presidents.
  32. Today it has 102 (out of 380).
