  15. <p>    HELP WANTED. Richard Darman usually comes alone to
  16. budget-planning sessions, partly because of his trouble hiring
  17. senior staffers to help run the Office of Management and Budget.
  18. Of six ideal job candidates, says a Darman associate, "Dick is
  19. probably not going to get more than one." While Darman is known
  20. as a brilliant but abrasive idea man, the reluctance to work
  21. with him stems mostly from his lack of managerial experience.

  23. <p>    HOT TICKET. With a President-elect who claims Texas roots
  24. and hunts quail in the Lone Star State, the big event of the
  25. Washington Inauguration is the Black Tie and Boots Ball, a Jan.
  26. 21 bash thrown by the Texas State Society. With tickets scarce,
  27. one petitioner wanted birth certificates presented at the doors
  28. to exclude non-Texans. No chance: George Bush was born in
  29. Massachusetts.

  31. <p>    ANTIAIRCRAFT ATTACK. Months before the unveiling of the
  32. pricey (about $500 million each) B-2 Stealth bomber, a top
  33. Pentagon official tried to shoot the plane down. At a June
  34. meeting of the secretive Defense Resources Board, Under
  35. Secretary of Defense for Acquisition Robert Costello
  36. recommended that the Pentagon kill the B-2 because of its rising
  37. price and quality problems. Costello's move failed, but he did
  38. get the Air Force's attention and persuaded the manufacturer to
  39. trim costs.

  41. <p>    EUREKA! WE'LL TAKE IT! Once it's built in Simi Valley,
  42. Calif., scholars will flock to the Ronald Reagan Presidential
  43. Library to sift through state papers. But for those more
  44. interested in the Gipper's favorite belt buckle (THE BUCKAROO
  45. STOPS HERE) or his ceremonial desktop jar of jelly beans, there
  46. will be another presidential repository: Eureka College, in
  47. central Illinois. The outgoing Chief has donated more than 500
  48. such items to his alma mater.
