1. Introduction
=======================
This came about basically because I was bored and I saw a need for people
to know more about StarCraft. There are a few StarCraft pages out there but
they all have mixed info and its hard to find everything you may want to know.
So, this was created to take all known information and put it together into
one source.
2. About
=======================
StarCraft is a game being made by Blizzard Entertainment. It follows in
the path of their other brilliant games, namely WarCraft and WarCraft II.
Although this game takes on an entirely new perspective as it takes place in
space. Just in case youve been under a rock the last year WarCraft is a real
time strategy game, which means that you control your armies on a top down
view. In the last year and a half real-time strategy games have caught on with
the releases of WarCraft II, Command and Conquer and RedAlert.
Originally displayed last year at the E3. StarCraft was shown to have a
*very* similar look to WarCraft II and this was not accepted very well so,
immediately after the show Blizzard set out to totally change the engine. And
from looking at it, they have done just that. StarCraft now sports an
isometric view(like Crusader) and the life meters have been moved to
being right on top of the selected object(like C&C). As well the user
interface has been moved to the bottom of the screen. And the interface for
each race will be different allowing you to really tell them apart.
Along with the great improvements, StarCraft also contains great graphics
and cutscenes that you'd expect from Blizzard. Hopefully, they'll be a little
longer than the ones in WarCraft II. With all these awesome changes combined
Blizzard looks to have another winner on the hands. We'll just have to see
what it is like.
3. Story
=======================
Not much is known about the story so far, but this little bit is taken from the
Blizzard StarCraft page:
"Let no human deny the perils of our time. While we struggle against one
another - divided by the petty strife of our common history - the tide of a
greater conflict is turning against us and is now threatening to destroy us
all.
"Korhal has chosen only its greatest rivals to receive this embassage.
As with my world, each of yours has arisen to the fore through a strength
and ingenuity unmatched by your neighbors - alien or human. But be warned:
pride comes before the fall. Even as your worlds are rich with a deserved
confidence born of triumph, the somber truth may make you rich with wisdom.
We are - all of us - poised upon the very brink of total annihilation.
"Despite subtly exerting their will over our fringe worlds and hampering
our expansion for decades, the Protoss have always claimed to have no
interest in our affairs. Now at last they have revealed their true nature,
seizing several human colonies in the Koprulu Sector. My world has not lost
any colonies, but it is abundantly clear to us with the Massacre on Tau Ceti
and with the continued mobilization of Templars that the Protoss are
preparing another offensive even as we speak.
"This tyranny in the Koprulu Sector is but a whisper - a faint harbinger
of things to come. Listen now - before that whisper grows to a roar and all
is lost. The Protoss possess an empire larger than any of us singly, but
together, fellow humans, we may defeat them. Do not let suspicion cloud
your judgment. Humanity must recognize its fraternity or face certain
extinction.
- excerpts from a recent speech by Ambassador Mengsk of Korhal IV -
(cd:m P11 - P5)
4. GAME
=======================
Game follows an isometric view with status bar being found on the bottom.
The game will focus on three races - Terrans, Zergs and Protoss. The style
of combat will be much different then WarCraft. Some races need to build
structures and harvest a resource, while others can just travel and breed.
Because of the different ways in which these races function many more unique
battles can take place. There can be ground battles, space battles, battles
on debris fields or missions where you are required to rescue someone or
steal something valuable.
In StarCraft you can control three different races, each with their own
personality.
■ Terrans - The terrans are very familiar, they are like they orcs and humans
whereby they mine resources and have similar characters. Like a peon
type character or grunt character. But, they also have new fighters,
bombers, dreadnoughts and personnel carriers. As well, there are mech
type units that react differently depending on the distance the enemy is.
The units also have many more options, than in WarCraft II.
■ Zerg - The Zerg are an insect like race. They are a bit different than
the Terrans. Instead of having a barracks, they have a Hive that
continually prodcues larva that just crawl around. You can then select
the larva nad choose what to turn them into. The larva although are
vulnerable to attack. The Zerg are weaker man to man than the Terrans
although they are not at a disadvantage because their numbers help level
the advantage.
■ Protoss - The Protoss are a completely different style which is yet unseen
in a strategy game. They are an ancient super race that will have much less
units than the Terrans or Zerg but will rely on their Psionic powers. They
can warp into bases or mess around with the opponents minds. But dont expect
them to be invulnerable. They will need time to recharge their powers and their
small numbers may make them an easier target
5. Interface
========================
Hmm, again not much here to say. Isometric view. With control status at
bottom. Probably similar to WarCraft whre you have to press a button to move,
attack, guard etc...
6. Multiplayer
========================
Will support modem, network, battle.net play as well as [probably] gaming
services(mplayer).
More to come here!
7. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
========================
The requirements for StarCraft are:
486/66 16megs RAM
Windows95
Double-Speed CD-ROM
8. RELEASE DATE
========================
It is now scheduled to be released in the MIDDLE of 97.
9. REVISIONS
========================
v1.0 - first version - October 15/96
v1.2 - small changes/restructuring - January 13/97
