  52. To run Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, your system must meet 
  53. the following minimum requirements:
  54.  
  55. - A 486 with a 66 MHz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  56.  
  57. - For Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98:
  58.   16 MB of RAM minimum
  59.  
  60.   For Microsoft Windows NT:
  61.   32 MB of RAM minimum
  62.  
  63. - For Microsoft Windows NT: 
  64.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  65.  
  66. - Minimal install from Web: 45 MB after restart
  67.   Standard install from Web: 70 MB after restart
  68.   Full install from Web: 100 MB after restart
  69.

  76. Disk Space Requirements for Internet Explorer 5 Installation
  77. ------------------------------------------------------------
  78. Internet Explorer 5 Setup installs the majority of its files to the 
  79. drive where the Windows operating system is installed, regardless 
  80. of the installation location you chose. To free up space on your hard 
  81. disk in order to meet the Internet Explorer 5 disk-space installation 
  82. requirements, you must free up space on the drive where the Windows 
  83. operating system is installed.
  84.

  86. SETUP
  87. =====
  88.  
  89. Installing Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools
  90. -------------------------------------------------
  91. Whether you choose to install over the network or download 
  92. the installation files to your hard disk, all Setup files are 
  93. copied to your hard disk. This allows you to reinstall more 
  94. quickly if necessary. If you want to reclaim the disk space, 
  95. you can remove the Setup directory by double-clicking the 
  96. Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel and then clicking 
  97. Internet Explorer 5. In the Microsoft Internet Explorer Setup 
  98. dialog box, click the Advanced button, and click the option 
  99. named Remove The Folder Containing Internet Explorer Setup Files.
  100.  
  101. You cannot install Internet Explorer 5 to or run it from a 
  102. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  103. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  104. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 5 to a 
  105. UNC path.
  106.  
  107.  
  108. Running Internet Explorer 5 on Windows NT
  109. -----------------------------------------
  110. Note
  111.   You must have administrative privileges to install and 
  112.   uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having 
  113.   administrative privileges the first time you start your computer 
  114.   after installing or uninstalling.
  115.  
  116. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  117. 5. This is also true for some add-in components.
  118.  
  119. If you're running Internet Explorer 5 on Windows NT, you must 
  120. set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet 
  121. Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order 
  122. for files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  123.  
  124. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  125. you install Internet Explorer 5, you must specify when prompted 
  126. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  127. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to update 
  128. the registry:
  129.  
  130. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  131. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  132. 3. Click OK.

  135. Installing Windows NT 4.0 SP3 Over Internet Explorer 5
  136. ------------------------------------------------------
  137. If you have to reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 and Internet 
  138. Explorer 5 Beta is installed on your computer, some components will 
  139. need to be re-registered. To do this, open the browser, click the Help 
  140. menu, and then click Repair. You will need to restart your computer to 
  141. finish the repair operation.

  144. Installing Over Windows NT 5 Beta Releases
  145. ------------------------------------------
  146. This is not a supported configuration. Setup will appear to run but 
  147. will update the naming of the browser without updating the components. 
  148. Full installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 Beta over Windows 
  149. NT 5 Beta releases is disabled. Windows NT 5 beta customers will receive 
  150. updated Internet Explorer components in the next beta release of 
  151. Windows NT 5.

  154. Running Internet Explorer 5 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  155. -----------------------------------------------------------
  156. If you dual boot between two operating systems that are configured
  157. to share a Program Files folder, and you uninstall an add-in
  158. component from one of your Internet Explorer 5 installations,
  159. it will be removed from both of them. This is because the add-in
  160. files are stored in the Program Files folder.
  161.  
  162.  
  163. Installing or Upgrading the Windows Desktop Update
  164. --------------------------------------------------
  165. To install or upgrade the Windows Desktop Update, you must install 
  166. Internet Explorer 4.01 SP-1 before you install Internet Explorer 5. 
  167.  
  168. If you have already installed a beta release of Internet Explorer 5 
  169. and would like to install the Windows Desktop Update, uninstall Internet 
  170. Explorer 5, install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP-1, and then reinstall 
  171. Internet Explorer 5.

  173.  
  174. Installing English Internet Explorer with Non-English Windows
  175. -------------------------------------------------------------
  176. When installing English Internet Explorer 5 on computers running 
  177. non-English versions of Windows, the Channel bar on the desktop may 
  178. change to display folders instead of the icons that were shown in 
  179. Internet Explorer 4.x. This will be fixed for the released version 
  180. of Internet Explorer 5.

  183. Installing Over Localized Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew Releases
  184. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  185. This is not a supported configuration for Beta 2. Installation of 
  186. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 Beta over Windows 98 Arabic or Hebrew 
  187. localized releases is disabled.

  190. Installing Internet Explorer 5 on Windows Terminal Server
  191. ---------------------------------------------------------
  192. Before installing Internet Explorer 5 on Windows Terminal Server, the 
  193. adminstrator needs to set a compatibility flag in the registry for the 
  194. Outlook Express 5 setup program to work correctly. To do this, carry
  195. out the following steps:
  196.  
  197. 1. Create this registry key:
  198.     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal 
  199.     Server\Compatibility\Applications\setup50
  200.  
  201. 2. Set the following value under the new setup50 key (this value should be 
  202. of type REG_DWORD): 
  203.     Flags = 0x108
  204.  
  205.  
  206. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools
  207. ---------------------------------------------------
  208. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools by carrying 
  209. out the following steps:
  210.  
  211. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  212. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, and then click Add/Remove.
  213. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  214.  
  215.  
  216. Uninstall for Internet Explorer 4.X Unavailable
  217. -----------------------------------------------
  218. Uninstall for Internet Explorer 4.X is unavailable when Internet 
  219. Explorer 5 is installed. The backup files for the version 4.X 
  220. uninstall are removed to back up files for version 5. The ability 
  221. to uninstall version 4.X is not restored after uninstalling version 5.

  224. Uninstalling Outlook Express 5
  225. ------------------------------
  226. After uninstalling Outlook Express 5, messages received while using 
  227. Outlook Express 5 will not be accessible using earlier versions of 
  228. Outlook Express or Internet Mail and News. If you were previously 
  229. running Outlook Express 4 or Internet Mail and News, only the 
  230. messages you received using those programs will be viewable after 
  231. uninstall. If you want to view Outlook Express 5 messages, you will
  232. need to reinstall Outlook Express 5.

  235. KNOWN ISSUES
  236. ============
  237.  
  238. Internet Connection Wizard Does Not Work in Offline Mode
  239. --------------------------------------------------------
  240. If Internet Explorer 5 has been set to Offline mode, the Internet 
  241. Connection wizard will fail to connect to the Microsoft Referral Service,
  242. resulting in an error page. To work around this issue, turn off 
  243. Offline mode before you run the Internet Connection wizard. 
  244.  
  245. To turn off Offline mode: 
  246. 1. Start Internet Explorer 5, click the File menu, and then click
  247.    Work Offline to remove the check mark. 
  248. 2. Run the Internet Connection wizard.
  249.  
  250.  
  251. Work Offline Dialog Box Appears with an Active Internet Connection
  252. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  253. If a dialog box titled Work Offline, requesting that you work offline 
  254. or try the connection again, appears the first time you run
  255. Internet Explorer 5, Internet Explorer is not detecting your connection 
  256. to the Internet. Click Try Again, and Internet Explorer will detect the
  257. active connection.
  258.  
  259.  
  260. Work Offline Dialog Box Does Not Appear if There Is No Internet Connection
  261. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
  262. If you do not have an active connection to the Internet and the option 
  263. Dial The Default Connection When Needed" in not selected, starting 
  264. Internet Explorer will result in the "Web page not available when 
  265. offline" error. To be prompted to dial a connection, on the Tools menu, 
  266. click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then select the Dial 
  267. The Default Connection When Needed check box.
  268.  
  269.  
  270. Customized Proxy Settings Per Connection 
  271. ----------------------------------------
  272. Internet Explorer 5 provides added functionality enabling you to
  273. configure proxy server settings for each dial-up connection. When 
  274. you upgrade Internet Explorer with the previous proxy server settings 
  275. enabled, Internet Explorer 5 applies those settings to all existing 
  276. dial-up connections. The first time a connection is used that may not 
  277. require a proxy server, Internet Explorer will prompt you for confirmation. 
  278.  
  279. To change proxy settings:
  280. 1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options. 
  281. 2. On the Connection tab, click the dial-up connection in the list of 
  282.    available connections, and then click the Settings button.
  283.  
  284.  
  285. Internet Explorer May Not Dial Automatically After Upgrading 
  286. ------------------------------------------------------------
  287. If you used a proxy server with Internet Explorer 4.x and then upgraded 
  288. to the Internet Explorer 5 beta release, you may have problems automatically 
  289. connecting to the Internet. This may occur even if the option named Dial 
  290. The Default Connection When Needed is selected. You can resolve this issue 
  291. by performing the following steps:
  292.  
  293. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then Click Control Panel.
  294. 2. Double-click the Internet icon.
  295. 3. On the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button.
  296. 4. Select the Do Not Allow Internet Applications To Use This Connection 
  297.    check box.
  298. 5. Click OK twice.

  300.  
  301. Gaining Access to Secure Web Sites
  302. ----------------------------------
  303. When connecting to secure Web sites, you will be prompted with an 
  304. authentication dialog box. At this time there is a 63-character limit 
  305. to the number of characters that can be entered for the username and 
  306. password. This may be a problem in deeply structured domains where you 
  307. are required to use your e-mail name as a username or password.
  308.  
  309.  
  310. New FTP User Interface and Functionality
  311. ----------------------------------------
  312. Internet Explorer 5 has an improved FTP user interface when direct 
  313. access to an FTP server is available. This feature allows file upload,
  314. drag-and-drop support, file deletion, and the downloading of several
  315. directories. If you discover an issue in the new FTP user interface that
  316. blocks FTP functionality, the feature can be disabled by typing the 
  317. following:
  318.     regsvr32.exe /u msieftp.dll
  319. in a command window while in the directory C:\Windows\System
  320. (or C:\Winnt\System32 on Windows NT systems).
  321.  
  322. The FTP feature is new and has the following outstanding
  323. issues in this release:
  324.  
  325. - Progress dialog boxes are not finished for all operations.
  326. - When opening a file, the FTP feature may not understand it's a file, 
  327.   and think it's a directory.
  328. - Copying from server to server is not supported.
  329. - LoginAs may not work correctly.
  330. - FTP doesn't recognize Offline mode.
  331. - You may receive script errors if you are using Web view.
  332. - The BACKSPACE key doesn't take you to the previous location unless it 
  333.   was an HTTP site.
  334.  
  335. If you are unable to see the new FTP user interface, you are probably 
  336. being blocked by a CERN-type proxy server. You can verify this by trying to 
  337. connect to the server by using FTP.exe. You can work around this issue by 
  338. using a non-CERN-type proxy server, such as Microsoft Remote WinSock. 
  339.  
  340.  
  341. Outlook Express AutoSelect Feature
  342. ----------------------------------
  343. The AutoSelect feature, which you get to by clicking the Language command 
  344. on the View menu, requires that the corresponding language support files are 
  345. installed on your computer. The language support files can be obtained from 
  346. the Internet Explorer 5 Add-On Components page.
  347.  
  348.  
  349. Menu Sound Events May Not Play
  350. ------------------------------
  351. If Internet Explorer 5 Beta is installed over the Windows Desktop Update 
  352. included with Internet Explorer 4.x, the Menu Popup and Menu Command 
  353. sound events may not play when you navigate the Start or Favorites
  354. menu.
  355.  
  356.  
  357. Web Page Frame Display
  358. ----------------------
  359. Internet Explorer 5 Beta might not properly display a Web page that uses 
  360. frames. The page may appear blank, 3-D borders might not appear, or some framed 
  361. pages might not load. The problem is that the page defining the frames might 
  362. not be written correctly with the <FRAMESET> tag within the <HEAD> and </HEAD>
  363. tags.

  365.  
  366. AutoComplete for Passwords
  367. --------------------------
  368. Once you save a password (in a Web page) with the AutoComplete feature turned 
  369. on, the password will be filled in automatically whenever you visit that page 
  370. until the password is deleted, even if AutoComplete for passwords is turned off. 
  371.  
  372. To disable completion of stored passwords
  373. 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  374. 2. On the Content tab, click AutoComplete.
  375. 3. Click Clear Passwords to clear all stored passwords.
  376.  
  377.  
  378. Script Error Reporting in DHTML Behaviors
  379. -----------------------------------------
  380. When a script error occurs in a dynamic HTML (DHTML) behavior that is 
  381. implemented through an HTML component (HTC), the error will be reported 
  382. as being in the main HTML document rather than in the HTC file. The line 
  383. number and error that occurred will be correct for the HTC file. To work 
  384. around the issue, behaviors implemented as HTC alerts can be used to signify 
  385. progress through the HTC script code or to update the window.status property 
  386. with the appropriate data displayed in the status bar.
  387.  
  388.  
  389. Filters and Transitions
  390. -----------------------
  391. There are some known issues related to filters and transitions in this 
  392. release of Internet Explorer 5. Examples of these include:
  393.  
  394. - Transitions using Filter::RevealTrans cause the filter to display 
  395.   incorrect black color between transitions before reaching final state.
  396. - Transitions using Filter::BlendTrans do not use correct colors, with 
  397.   flawed color palette effect.  
  398. - Filters involving transitions on input tags may not function correctly.
  399. - Filters and transitions clip incorrectly during transitioning, causing 
  400.   transitions not to fill the complete region.
  401. - Objects within IFRAME with Filter::RevealTrans may not transition.
  402.  
  403. These issues will be fixed for the final release of Internet Explorer 5.
  404.  
  405.  
  406. AutoSearch Feature for URLs Ending in .net
  407. ------------------------------------------
  408. When you use the AutoSearch feature in Internet Explorer 5 Beta, the 
  409. browser will not currently search for sites ending with .net. This issue 
  410. will be fixed for the final release of Internet Explorer 5.
  411.  
  412.  
  413. Script Error After Install on Demand
  414. ------------------------------------
  415. If you go to a Web page that requires an object such as Data Binding, and 
  416. the object is not installed, Internet Explorer will "Install on Demand" (IOD).  
  417. Immediately upon installation of the object, the script on the page will 
  418. cause a script error. Refresh the page and the script will work properly.
  419.  
  420.  
  421. Auto-Detection of Web Page Language
  422. -----------------------------------
  423. In Internet Explorer 5 Beta, auto-detection of the language used on a Web page 
  424. is unreliable and may prompt you to download unneeded language packs. If this 
  425. occurs, cancel the download; the browser will continue to operate normally.
  426.  
  427.  
  428. Printing the Contents of an ActiveX Control
  429. -------------------------------------------
  430. When you print a Web page containing an ActiveX control, the contents 
  431. of the control are offset incorrectly by an amount equal to the non-printable 
  432. area at the top and left of the page.
  433.  
  434.  
  435. Clear Forms in AutoComplete
  436. ---------------------------
  437. In this release, if you click the Clear Forms button to clear AutoComplete 
  438. information, username and password data will be erased along with the form 
  439. information. Web addresses are not affected. 
  440.  
  441.  
  442. Loading Certain URLs in Windows Media Player Version 6.00.03.0918
  443. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  444. URLs that begin with https:// and lowercase or uppercase ANSI characters 
  445. will not load in the Windows Media Player.
  446.  
  447.  
  448. Font Display Issues
  449. ----------------------------
  450. If you run a non-Far East language version of Windows NT 4.0, please be aware 
  451. that if you have installed many large fonts, the system's ability to utilize 
  452. those fonts may be exceeded.  If Far East language Web pages do not display 
  453. correctly, please uninstall unnecessary fonts.
  454.  
  455.  
  456. Non-English Characters in URLs and Queries
  457. -----------------------------------------
  458. Internet Explorer 5 uses a new standard to transmit non-English URLs to the 
  459. server. URLs are now encoded in a character encoding standard called UTF-8. 
  460. If the server is running Microsoft Internet Information Server 4 or later, 
  461. the URLs will work as expected. Many other servers are not enabled to 
  462. process URLs encoded in UTF-8. To use non-English characters in URLs on 
  463. these servers, click the Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the 
  464. Advanced tab, and then clear the box labeled Always Send URLs As UTF-8.
  465.  
  466. This beta release of Internet Explorer 5 also transmits queries encoded 
  467. in UTF-8, unless they are submitted as part of a FORM on an HTML page 
  468. the Always Send URLs As UTF-8 check box is cleared. This will be resolved 
  469. for the final release.
  470.  
  471.  
  472. VBScript Inline Event Handlers with Single Quotes Will Cause Scripting Errors
  473. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  474. Pages that use single quotation marks in an inline event handler will cause 
  475. script errors with this release of Internet Explorer 5.  You can make 
  476. these pages functional by switching to double quotation marks.
  477.  
  478. Here are some examples of the VB Script syntax that will cause an error in 
  479. this beta release:
  480. A. String parameters to a function:
  481.     <div onclick="myfunction('myparam', 'myparam2' )">div text</div>
  482.     <div onclick="myfunction 'myparam', 'myparam2'  ">
  483. B. Comments in the handler:
  484.     <div onclick="myfunction() 'my comment">
  485. C. A literal string:
  486.     <div onclick="myvariable='my string'  ">
  487.  
  488. To work around this problem for this beta release, page authors need to 
  489. change the following things for broken event handlers:
  490. 1. Change the outer double quotation marks to single quotation marks; for 
  491.    example,
  492.     <div onclick=' ... '>
  493. 2. Surround all strings in inline event handlers with double quotation marks.
  494.     For example, you would change the syntax of the first example above 
  495.     to the following:
  496.     <div onclick='myfunction("myparam","myparam2") '>
  497.  
  498.  
  499. Using VBSript in Forms
  500. ----------------------
  501. In this release, VBScript does not scope object names correctly in forms.  
  502. To work around this, always fully qualify the object name when referring 
  503. to it in VBScript.  
  504.  
  505. This HTML example will fail as it references Target1, which is available 
  506. only in Form1, not in the document.

  516. To fix this problem, Target1 needs to be qualified further with the document 
  517. and form name--in this case, document.Form1.Target1.selectedIndex.value. The

  530. Internet Explorer 4.x Compatibility Mode
  531. ----------------------------------------
  532. The Internet Explorer 4.x compatibility option is useful to Web 
  533. developers who want to view and test their Web sites on different 
  534. versions of Internet Explorer using the same computer. You may not 
  535. be able to change all settings for the browser while in this mode. 
  536. When using the compatibility option, you should change Internet 
  537. Options through Control Panel, not through the browser's Internet 
  538. Options on the View menu.

  541. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  542. =========================
  543.  
  544. Internet Information Server After Installation
  545. ----------------------------------------------
  546. For systems using Internet Information Server, there may be problems with
  547. the server operation on the first restart that is part of the installation 
  548. process for Internet Explorer 5. To resolve this issue, restart the computer 
  549. after the installation of Internet Explorer is complete.
  550.  
  551.  
  552. Outlook Express Address Book Digital ID with Outlook 98 Installation
  553. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  554. If Outlook 98 and Outlook Express are installed, the address book is shared.
  555. For this release, you are unable to add a digital signature to shared 
  556. address-book entries. To work around this, open the Address Book, click the 
  557. Tools menu, and then click Options. Click Do Not Share. This removes the shared
  558. address book and allows the addition of a digital signature to all address
  559. book entries.

  562. Office 2000 PowerPoint Files
  563. ----------------------------
  564. If you install Internet Explorer 5 as part of Microsoft Office 2000, and then 
  565. uninstall Internet Explorer 5, Microsoft PowerPoint may be unable to open
