  37. MICROSOFT OUTLOOK EXPRESS
  38. =========================
  39.  
  40. Outlook Express Mail is an Internet standards based e-mail and news 
  41. reader.
  42.  
  43. To read e-mail with Outlook Express, you must be using a mail system
  44. that uses SMTP and POP3 or IMAP protocols. At this time, you cannot
  45. use Microsoft Outlook Express to access your e-mail account with any
  46. of the following services: MS Mail, cc:Mail, The Microsoft Network
  47. (MSN), with the exception of the MSN "Metro" (MSN 2.5) beta release, 
  48. CompuServe, America Online (AOL), or Microsoft Exchange Server prior 
  49. to version 5. If you don't know whether your system uses these services, 
  50. contact your administrator or your Internet service provider and ask if 
  51. they support SMTP/POP3 or IMAP mail clients.
  52.  
  53. You can also use Microsoft Outlook Express News to read bulletin-board
  54. discussion groups, such as the Usenet, using NNTP-based news servers.
  55. Contact your Internet service provider or network administrator for
  56. the name of the news server that you should use. Outlook Express News
  57. can also be used to receive support for a variety of Microsoft
  58. products on the news server msnews.microsoft.com.
  59.

  61. KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE
  62. ============================
  63.  
  64. - When receiving a message using a GeoCities mail account, you might 
  65.   be unable to view any of the original message, or you may see only 
  66.   the following information:  Postage Paid by... [graphic].  
  67.  
  68. - You will not be able to see embedded objects or images sent from
  69.   people using Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, or Windows
  70.   Messaging. File attachments work fine, however.
  71.  
  72. - If you use HTML in your signature, and you send the message before
  73.   any included images have finished drawing, the text you add to the
  74.   message may be lost.
  75.  
  76. - Some mail clients send Cyrillic messages with tags indicating that
  77.   they are in a western European character set. As a result, Outlook
  78.   Express uses a western-European font to display the message, which
  79.   then appears garbled. To work around this problem, click the View
  80.   menu, click Language, and then choose a Russian character set, such
  81.   as K0I8. The message should display properly using the Russian font.
  82.  
  83. - Inbox rules are not available for IMAP accounts.
  84.  
  85. - If you are using Outlook Express with a SUN Solstice, Netscape, or 
  86.   Innosoft IMAP server, it may cause your server to stop responding. 
  87.   Please contact the 3rd party provider for an update to the IMAP 
  88.   server software to correct this problem.
  89.  
  90. - Outlook Express S/MIME does not verify the status of digital IDs
  91.   before sending encrypted or signed messages. This means that a 
  92.   digital ID that is revoked, expired, not trusted or that has an 
  93.   incorrect e-mail address will be used without providing any warning.
  94.  
  95. - To send signed messages and receive encrypted messages,  you must 
  96.   have a digital ID. Currently, the only way to get a digital ID 
  97.   for use with Outlook Express is to use Internet Explorer 4.0 and 
  98.   go to the Verisign Web site, http://digitalid.verisign.com.
  99.  
  100. - While sending and retrieving messages, closing Outlook Express and
  101.   restarting it will cause Outlook Express to crash.
  102.  
  103. - In Outlook Express News, if the option "Get 300 headers at a time" is 
  104.   turned on, the following commands: Get New Headers, Get New Messages, 
  105.   Get All Messages, and Get Marked Messages will retrieve only 300 (or
  106.   the number that you specify) headers at a time. To prevent this, you 
  107.   should turn off this option.
  108.  
  109. - To cancel a news message, you must be using the same message encoding
  110.   options as was used for the original message. 
  111.  
  112. - If no folders are displayed for your IMAP server or if you want
  113.   to refresh the list of IMAP folders you need to download the folder
  114.   list from the server. To do this, select the IMAP server. If you 
  115.   connect to the server by using a modem, click the Tools menu, and 
  116.   then select Offline > Dial. If you connect to the IMAP server by 
  117.   using a LAN, you can skip this step. After you have connected to 
  118.   the server, click the File menu, click Folders, and then click 
  119.   Refresh Folder List.
  120.  
  121. - If you need to change any of the following settings for your IMAP 
  122.   account:
  123.  
  124.   . IMAP server name or port number
  125.   . Account type (POP3 or IMAP)
  126.   . Any logon information
  127.  
  128.   it is recommended that you delete the IMAP account and create a new
  129.   account with the updated settings.
  130.                 
  131. - Outlook Express is designed to work only with IMAP4 compliant
  132.   servers.  IMAP2bis servers are not supported in this release.
  133.  
  134. - If you rename a news server account name and then attempt to 
  135.   perform some action on it, for example copying messages from the 
  136.   server, you may receive an error message. To work around this
  137.   problem, close OE and restart after the renaming of a server.
  138.  
  139. - If encrypting a message when there is not a certificate for one of
  140.   the recipients, an error will display stating that there is not
  141.   a certificate for that recipient as well as the sender.
  142.  
  143. - Certificates are now handled on a per account basis. You must 
  144.   reselect which certificate to use for each account from the 
  145.   Accounts menu. Select the account you want to configure for 
  146.   security features and check the box to use a certificate when 
  147.   sending secure messages. You must also click the Certificate button 
  148.   to select which to use.
  149.  
  150. - If you used Internet News for reading newsgroups, any messages
  151.   in your "Posted Items" folder will be moved into the "Sent Items 
  152.   folder when you upgrade to Outlook Express.
  153.  
  154. - Outlook Express only shows subscribed IMAP folders in the
  155.   folder list. It no longer shows all your folders (subscribed and
  156.   unsubscribed). If you want to see all your folders in the folder
  157.   list, you should subscribe to all your folders. Click on the "File"
  158.   menu, then click "Folder >" and select "Subscribe All Folders" menu.
  159.   If there are folders that you don't want to displayed in the folder
  160.   list, you can unsubscribe the folder.  Click on the File menu, click
  161.   on Folder >, and select "Unsubscribe Folder".  
  162.  
  163. - If you send a Rich Text (HTML) message which contains embedded
  164.   pictures and the option to "Send pictures with message" is turned
  165.   off, any pictures from a local computer or LAN will not be viewed
  166.   when receiving and reading the message using Netscape's Messenger.
  167.  
  168. Note to French users 
  169. -------------------- 
  170. In order to comply with the French laws on the use of encryption 
  171. material, S/MIME support in Outlook Express has been disabled when 
  172. used in France. However, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 support is authorized, 
  173. and hence left enabled.

  178. TROUBLESHOOTING
  179. ===============
  180.  
  181. - If you run into a problem, try the troubleshooter in online Help 
  182.   or on the Microsoft Web site at 
  183.   http://www.microsoft.com/support/tshooters.htm. To start the online 
  184.   Help troubleshooters, carry out the following steps:
  185.  
  186.   1. In Outlook Express, click the Help menu, and then click Help
  187.      Topics.
  188.   2. Double-click the "Troubleshooting" topic on the Contents tab.
  189.  
  190. - Check your connection to your Internet service provider.
  191.  
  192. - If you are unable to send or receive mail, check the following:
  193.  
  194.   - The TCP/IP protocol is installed on your computer.
  195.   - All cables are properly connected to your computer, modem, or LAN.
  196.   - You have a PPP or SLIP account with your Internet service
  197.     provider.
  198.   - Your Internet service provider or LAN server supports POP3 or
  199.     IMAP and SMTP.
  200.   - Your modem communication parameters (baud rate and type of 
  201.     protocol) are set correctly.
  202.  
  203. - Make sure that you use an account name and password for a news 
  204.   server only if it requires them. If you use an account name and 
  205.   password and they are not required, you will not be able to connect 
  206.   to the news server.
  207.  
  208. - To access the Microsoft peer product support newsgroups, carry out
  209.   the following steps:
  210.  
  211.   1. Click the Tools menu, and then click Accounts.
  212.   2. Click Add, and then click News on the drop-down menu.
  213.   3. Follow the directions on your screen.
  214.   4. When you are prompted for a server name, type
  215.      msnews.microsoft.com 
  216.  
  217.      If that name isn't found by your Internet service provider, you 
  218.      can type 131.107.3.27 instead.
  219.  
  220.   You do not need to log on to this news server.
  221.  
  222.  
  223. TIPS AND TRICKS
  224. ===============
  225.  
  226. - You can change the sound that notifies you that you have received 
  227.   new mail. To do this, double-click the Sounds icon in Control 
  228.   Panel, and select New Mail Notification from the events list.
  229.  
  230. - Use the Check Names command, available on the Tools menu or on 
  231.   the New Message toolbar, to look up a person's e-mail address 
  232.   when sending mail.á The name will be underlined when the 
  233.   associated address is found.
  234.  
  235. - You can move the toolbar to a different edge of your screen by
  236.   right-clicking it and then choosing Left, Right, Bottom, or Top
  237.   from the Align menu.
  238.  
  239. - To send a mail message in Plain Text only (no HTML formatting),
  240.   click the Format menu, and then click on Plain Text. To make Plain 
  241.   Text the default setting for new messages, replies, and forwarded 
  242.   messages, click the Tools menu, click Options, click the Send 
  243.   tab, and then select Plain Text under Mail sending format. 
  244.   (News messages are sent in Plain Text by default, but similarly, 
  245.   this setting can be changed under News sending format.)
  246.  
  247. - To customize the toolbar, right-click it, and use the menu commands 
  248.   to perform the desired actions.
  249.  
  250. - You can resize the preview pane or the message list by dragging the
  251.   divider between the preview pane and the message list.
  252.  
  253. - You can change how the preview pane splits, or turn it off entirely,
  254.   by clicking the View menu, clicking Layout and changing the options
  255.   in the dialog box.
  256.  
  257. - You can specify that you want to see only unread news messages. To
  258.   do this, click a newsgroup, click the View menu, click Current
  259.   View, and then click Unread Messages.
  260.  
  261. - You can set messages to automatically download to the preview pane
  262.   by clicking the Tools menu, clicking Options, clicking the Read
  263.   tab, then selecting the Automatically Show Messages in the Preview
  264.   Pane check box.
  265.  
  266. - To view the e-mail address of someone who has sent you a message,
  267.   double-click the message to open it, then double-click the author's 
  268.   name in the From field. You can also add this person to your Address
  269.   Book by right-clicking the name, and then clicking Add To Address 
  270.   Book.
  271.  
  272. - To view responses to a particular message in a newsgroup, click the
  273.   plus sign (+) next to the message. The responses appear indented
  274.   below it.
  275.  
  276. - In mail, you can leave a copy of your messages on the server. To set
  277.   this option, click the Tools menu, and then click Accounts. Select
  278.   the mail account you want to modify, and then click Properties. Click 
  279.   the Advanced tab, and then select the Leave A Copy Of Messages On 
  280.   Server check box.
  281.  
  282. - You can search for newsgroups that contain specific words in their 
  283.   names. To do this:
  284.  
  285.   1. Click the Tools menu, and then click Newsgroups. 
  286.   2. In the Search box, enter the words separated by a space.
  287.  
  288.   You can also search newsgroup descriptions. If you cannot see the
  289.   descriptions, click the Tools menu, and then click Accounts. 
  290.   Select the news account you want to modify, click Properties, and 
  291.   then click the Advanced tab. Next, select the Use Newsgroup 
  292.   Descriptions check box.á Click the Tools menu, and then click
  293.   Newsgroups.á In the Newsgroups window, click "Reset List."
  294.  
  295. - You can have your signature added to all messages, including those
  296.   that you reply to or forward. To do this, click the Tools menu, and
  297.   then click Stationery. On the Mail or News tab, select the following
  298.   check box: Add Signature To The End Of All Outgoing messages.
  299.  
  300. - It is possible to use HTML files as signatures as well as plain
  301.   text files.
  302.  
  303. - To reorder columns, you can drag and drop column headings. Columns
  304.   can be resized by dragging the right edge of the column header. 
  305.  
  306. - You can view all the headers for a news message. To do this,
  307.   double-click the message to open it in a separate window, click the
  308.   View menu, and then click Full Headers.
  309.  
  310. - If you are running Outlook Express on Windows NT and you need to add
  311.   support for a different language, double-click the Keyboard icon in
  312.   Control Panel, and then click Add. Follow the instructions on your
  313.   screen. This installs the appropriate NLS (National Language
  314.   Support) files. You do not have to use the associated keyboard
  315.   layout.
