Deadlock: Planetary Conquest
README file for Downloadable Demo version 1.20
Thanks for playing the Deadlock Demo, and consulting this file.
********************************************************************
Note to Windows 3.1 users...
Deadlock requires a Windows extension called Win32s to run properly.
This gives Windows 3.1 32-bit power. To keep the size of this demo
down, we did not include the files
for Win32s. (They're about 16 megs!) If you have Windows 3.1,
and the Deadlock Demo setup informs you need Win32s, download it
from either the Microsoft web site or check out the Accolade web
site (www.accolade.com) where we have a link to the files you need.
Once you've installed Win32s, Deadlock will run.
To go to the Microsoft Website, we recommend the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/search/
Once there, use the search box and enter "Win32s". This will take
you to the file you need to download. Be sure you download Win32s
version 1.30c, the most current version.
For information on how to install Win32s, refer to the end of this
file.

A LITTLE ABOUT THIS DEMO
------------------------
The demo you just downloaded is a complete version of Deadlock.
It does, however, have a few restrictions:
--You may research only the basic levels of technology.
--The game will halt after 40 turns in a single-player game.
--You are limited to only 3 players in a multi-player game.
--You may only play on small or medium sized worlds.
--There is no load game or save game.
--There are no full-motion, lip-synched messages from your
opponents, nor are there opening and closing movies.
--There is no music.
When you play this demo, it will ask for the Deadlock CD to be
inserted. This is normal. With this demo, your only option is
to click CANCEL to bypass the CD request.
For Windows95 users, this demo is playable on the Internet
through the game services TEN and Mplayer! First, however,
you will have to download the TEN and/or Mplayer programs.
Visit www.ten.net and www.mplayer.com for more information.
For additional help, please consult the following helpful files
in your Deadlock directory.
--HELPME.TXT: Up-to-date technical support information, plus
common problems and their solutions.
--MODEM.TXT: Detailed advice on setting up modem and direct-
connect cable games.
OTHER ACCOLADE STUFF!
---------------------
Accolade has a fistful of demos to rock your world! Visit
the Accolade Web site (www.accolade.com) for even more
downloadable free demos, shareware, and articles.
LAST-MINUTE ITEMS YOU SHOULD KNOW!
----------------------------------
CHAT HOTKEYS: There are some handy hotkeys to help you more easily
send chat messages to your opponents. The message will be sent to
the opponents you have currently checked in your "Send Chat
Message" dialog box.
--Control-I: Send an insult
--Control-T: Send a threat
--Control-B: Send a brag
--Control-C: Send a complaint
COST OF CITY CENTERS: Each City Center you build costs
progressively more money and resources. The first City Center you
build only takes 500 credits, 250 metal, and 50 energy. The next
center needs 1,000 credits, 500 metal, and 100 energy, while the
third City Center costs 1,500 credits, 750 metal, and 150 energy!
The original base amount is always added into the cost of your
next City Center.
SETTING PORTS ON THE WORLD MAP: You can set which ocean territory
your new ships will be in after they are manufactured. Double
click on your Shipyard in the settlement map. Press the SET PORT
button. A small map appears; ocean territories that border your
Shipyard are highlighted. Choose the ocean where you want your
port. When you build a new ship it will appear in this territory.
AUTOSAVE: Because a planet is a pretty complex thing to run, we've
provided an automatic game save function. If you find yourself
unable or unwilling to continue your game, you can always reboot
the ol' PC and load the saved game called AUTOSAVE from your
Deadlock directory. Multiplayer games can only be restored to solo
play, however.
GAME PATCH: No matter what kind of problem you are having with
Deadlock, thereÆs a good chance it's been fixed in the patch! A
patch is a new version of the program which you can get for free
from Accolade. See the file HELPME.TXT for information on how to
get and use the game patch.
STRATEGY GUIDE: Did you know that there are some very good
Deadlock strategy guides available? You can find out more about
the inner workings that make your colony tick. Get valuable hints
for planetary domination! Ask your software store for the Deadlock
strategy guide, or search the Web for more information. The
Accolade site (www.accolade.com) is a good place to start!
USING DEADLOCK SOUNDS IN WINDOWS: Want to make your computer
scream a Tarth Juggernaut yell when it boots up? How about a mind
blast instead of an error beep? In your Deadlock directory is a
directory called WAV, in which you will find many sounds that you
can use in Windows. In "Sounds" in the control panel you can make
Windows use some of these .WAV files. Enjoy!
THE DEADLOCK SONG: You can only get it here at Accolade! Listen to
the Deadlock Song, composed and performed by our very own lead
programmer, Paul Kwinn. It is available on the Accolade web site.
(www.accolade.com) To learn how to play .WAV files, consult your
Windows documentation.
PIRACY HURTS GAMING
-------------------
This game is the property of Accolade, Inc. Criminals may sell or
give away a fully-enabled version of this game. This hurts the
game-making community by reducing sales. It also is illegal.
This copy protection can be broken, as any can. Please support the
makers of this game by buying it from a legitimate source, such as
a public software retail store.
Demo versions of this game, which limit the length of the game
playable in solo mode, and which limit you to the first two levels
of technology in all modes, are freely distributable, as long as
the modified demo game was made by Accolade or its partners. In
other words, legitimate demo versions of this game are OK to copy
freely.
However, even demo versions of this game may not be sold or made
part of a purchasable collection of software without Accolade's
explicit permission.
If you see an illegal copy of this game, please report it to
Accolade and to the Software PublisherÆs Association. The SPA
phone number is 800/388-7478.
Those pirates with honor will at least leave this message intact.

HOW TO INSTALL WIN32S
******************************************************************
What is Win32s?
Win32s is a subsystem created by Microsoft for the
Windows 3.1x and Windows for Workgroups(WfW) 3.1x. These are 16-bit
operating systems and require the Win32s libraries to run Win32
(32-bit) applications. Deadlock is a Win32 application.
How do I know if I need win32s?
You have a 16-bit operating system and you'll need to
install Microsoft's Win32s software. The latest
version of Win32s is 1.30c Build 1.30.172. If you are not sure what
build of Win32s you have on your system, check the version number in
the win32s.ini file located in the /windows/system directory. Double
click on the file and Windows will open the file with notepad. If your
version of Win32s is earlier than 1.30.172 you should upgrade. The file
PW1118.EXE contains Win32s v1.30c Build 1.30.172 and is available at
our FTP site. The file PW1118.EXE is a self-extracting compressed
archive.
Hey, I have win95/NT. Do I need the win32s?
Nope! Windows NT and Win95 are 32-bit operating systems
with Win32s and OLE support built into the operating system. Windows NT
and Windows 95 users should NOT install Win32s on their systems.
OK smart guy, then how do I install it?
Installing Win32s
Download the file to a a temporary directory (c:\install).
Close all applications except the File Manager.
Locate PW1118.EXE with the File Manager.
Double click on PW1118.EXE to extract the files.
Double click setup.exe to begin the Win32s installation process.
Thanks for all your help....NOT! Where can I get some real info on
win32s?
The latest Win32s information can be found from the Microsoft
32 bit Development Kit Knowldge Base. Search the knowledge base using
keywords like Win32s, installation, S3 video, etc....
Thanks but no thanks, how do I get rid of the bloody win32s?
This information comes from the Win32s area of the The Microsoft
SDK FAQ at http://www.microsoft.com/kb/faq/devtools/winsdk/win32s/
To remove Win32s:
1. Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the
SYSTEM.INI file
device=<WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\win32s\w32s.386
where <WINDOWS> and <SYSTEM> are where the Windows and System
directories are, respectively.
2. Modify the following line from the [BOOT] section in the SYSTEM.INI
file
drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll
to the following (remove winmm16.dll)
drivers=mmsystem.dll
3. Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM> subdirectory
or from the SYSTEM directory in network installations:
W32SYS.DLL
WIN32S16.DLL
WIN32S.INI
4. Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory
or the <SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory in network installations. Then
delete subdirectory itself.
5. Restart Windows.
NOTE: <WINDOWS> refers to the windows installation directory. On a
networked Windows installation, the system directory may be located
on a remote share. If you are only removing Win32s from your machine,
then you do not need to remove the shared files (in <SYSTEM> and
<SYSTEM>\WIN32S). Before removing these files from the network share,
make sure that all users that use Win32s have removed the references
to Win32s from the SYSTEM.INI file.
