  4. "PIOS One" prototype nearing completion
  5. ---------------------------------------

  7. The "PIOS ONE" wasn't ready for the Hannover Faire. Unfortunately,
  8. due to unexpected delays with our contract manufacturer, and
  9. late delivery of some critical test equipment, detailed debugging
  10. of the "PIOS ONE" prototype didn't start until the week of CeBIT.
  11. We had a fully functional lab set up at the PIOS home office,
  12. but eventually found a bug on the prototype CPU card that
  13. couldn't be easily fixed, due to the mechanical difficulties of
  14. reworking a Ball Grid Array packaged chip.
  15.     
  16. Other than missing the CeBIT introduction, though, this was not
  17. a terrible problem. The prototype CPU module was based on the
  18. MPC105 controller, the same chip used in the BeBox - not CHRP
  19. compliant. We had already begun work on a new CPU card with the
  20. CHRP compliant MPC106 controller, and other improvements. This
  21. will be shipped in every PIOS system. Thanks to the MPC106
  22. architecture and other refinements, we can deliver better
  23. performance with a single CPU than the BeBox delivered with a
  24. dual processor. The new module also supports fast L2 cache, one
  25. additional DIMM module, and the standard PowerPC "Socket3", which
  26. can be used for logic analyzers and simple CPU upgrades.

  28. With these advanced machines now soon up and running, we will then
  29. be ready to go into serial production.

  37. Production of the first generation of "PIOS ONE"-based systems,
  38. transAM and Maxxtrem, will be ramped up by May. We are expecting
  39. to deliver the first transAM-200s by June 1st, followed shortly
  40. afterwards by the Maxxtrem-200s.
