Both Steve and his wife Belinda are the proprietors of F1 Software

LOADING INSTRUCTIONS
Type LOAD "" and press ENTER. If using 128K Spectrum, select 48K
Basic.
CUP MANAGER
Cup Manager is the sequel to our highly successful football
management game "The Manager", extending the options available by
enhancing the game play and giving players the opportunity to try
their skills in the exiting sudden-death cup competition. Cup
Manager can be played and enjoyed without ownership of The Manager,
but we suggest that it is even more fun if you play with a team
that you have built from the other game.
The object of Cup Manager is quite simple - to win the cup! Your
team starts as a qualifier in the 3rd round and must beat
opposition from the best in the First Division to the Giant Killers
of the Lower Divisions and Non-League.
PLAYING THE GAME
The two main menus are controlled by pressing the spacebar to
change the highlighted option, and ENTER to select.
On loading the game you will be asked to choose a difficulty level
- we strongly suggest you start with easy (1)! If you are loading
a team from The Manager, the computer will over-ride this and will
automatically play at level 9. It assumes you have a good team and
know what you are doing.
LOAD TEAM
Because Cup Manager is a relatively short game, there is no save
game option, but as mentioned before, you are able to load a team
from our other game "The Manager". Only select this option if you
have a saved team on tape ready to load. It will load in all the
player characteristics necessary to play the game.
SQUAD
This takes you to look at the players you have available; more of
this later.
PLAY
This takes you to the match. prepare your team first.
STATS
Shows statistics for your current team in the cup so far.
SQUAD SCREEN
This screen shows the team currently picked; their names (which can
be changed if you don't like them), playing position, (Goalkeeper,
Defender, Midfielder, Attacker), age (AG), skill (SK) and fitness
(F). Age does not effect performance within the game as it does in
The Manager, as the cup competition is over in one season. Skill
is important and can be affected by training. Fitness can be
affected by both training and the use of the Physio.
The overall team performance is affected by a combination of
ratings, which group together to give a percentage efficiency
(EEF) e.g. the formation selected, team morale, home advantage etc.
The features available to help you on the squad screen are as
follows:
FORMATION
It is very important that you ensure that your team is in the
correct formation before you play a match, as once the match has
kicked off, any player out of position will become disillusioned,
and his skill will suffer as a result. This effect is permanent.
However, a substitute brought on at half-time can be played out of
position without penalty. The formations you can choose from are
as follows: 4-3-3, 4-2-4, 4-4-2, 5-3-2.
In order to adhere to (for example) 4-3-3, you must have a
Goalkeeper in position 1, Defenders in positions 2,3,4,5,
Midfielders in positions 6,7,8 and Attackers in positions 9,10,11.
For other formations, always have a goalkeeper at no.1 and use the
first number of the formation for defence and so on.
NEXT
This is followed by the week number. You have four weeks between
each round of the cup (Two if your next game is a replay) and each
week you can select a mode of training and call your physio in to
treat injuries etc.
If you use both in any week, the week number will move on
automatically, but if you choose to use only one (or neither) of
these during the week, then you must select NEXT to move the week
on. When you have completed your work at the end of week 4, select
MENU to play the game.
TRAINING
There are five different types of training available to you each
week; the tougher you train your players, the more skill is likely
to increase, but the likelihood of injury will also be greater.
Remember, you only have four weeks to get your team fit for the
next match!
PHYSIO
This chap is quite good with injured players, and can also give a
welcome fitness BOOST.
PENALTIES
In case of a penalty being awarded, you will need to nominate a
penalty taker. the computer will suggest one, but you can change
as often as you wish.
SWAP
Allows you to move players around in the team and reserves by
exchanging places of any two players at a time.
EDIT
If you are unhappy with our choice of player's names, you may
change them with this option.
Select any of these by pressing the appropriate highlighted letter.
After selecting the PLAY option, you will be asked to wait for a
few moments, while the draw is made, then your opponents for the
next round will be shown, with their league status (division), team
statistics and usual tactics. At this point you can return to the
squad screen for any last minute changes, final training etc. or
you can go ahead and play the match.
Selecting CONTINUE puts you in the dressing room with the team, and
you are able to give a "pre-match chat!"; i.e. you can select from
a range of tactics. It is up to you as manager to observe the
effects these tactics have on the game, and against the various
tactics employed by your opponents. You are given the opportunity
to change things at half-time (by selecting SQUAD) if you feel it
is necessary. the match commentary should give you some idea of
the sort of effect the tactics of the two teams are having, but
bear in mind that other things are also taken into account, such as
the skill and fitness of the players, the division they play in and
even the "Giant-Killing" syndrome that so often provides shocks in
real football.
A draw after 90 minutes puts you in a replay situation; the venue
for the game is reversed, and you are given two more weeks to
prepare your team.
If you have the misfortune to be knocked out of the third round
(i.e. the first game), you are sportingly offered the managerial
post at a club still in the tournament.
This, however, is your last chance - fail with this team and you
must start again in another competition. Unlike real football
though, you don't have to wait a year for another try!
PLEASE NOTE
Features listed are for Spectrum version; some features may not be
available on other versions.

Thanx for reading and enjoy the snapshot everyone. Many thanx to
Steve Bye for giving myself permission to release the snapshot and
dox.
Andy Gibson (AGAS Productions) - September 1996
(As far as I'm aware, Cup Manager Snapshot has NEVER appeared on
any other Speccy Compilation Disks/CD's -
Also look out for the EXCLUSIVE snapshots & docs for `Classic
Punter' `Classic Trainer' and `Soccer Director'
If I can get hold of `THE MANAGER' from Steve and any of his other
Spectrum titles, I shall no doubt type up the docs and release
snapshots also :^)
You may like to know that PUNTER is now available in an Amiga
Version. If you played the Speccy snapshot (which I released
during August 1996) and liked it, please get in touch with Steve at
F1 for a copy of the Amiga version, which is far more superior.
Quick note:
~~~~~~~~~~~
Game sampled (snapshotted!) using:
Denon DRM-700 Cassette Deck
Audio Engineer +2 Sampler (Imager)
Spectrum Emulator V2.0
(settings set for PROSOUND! Weird!)
Game should run better in ZXam Emulator on A1200.
(: Happy Gaming Peeps! - Andy Gibson - AGAS Productions Aug 1996 :)
Notes from Steve Bye
Cup Manager was my sixth and final game for GTI. I did write another
game with my play tester (Mike Sparks) it was a football quiz called
Soccer Genius, I did the coding Mike compiled and typed the questions.
GTI didn't want it so I sent it to D&H games, they had Football Director
and a Soccer Quiz already and so turned it down. The 8 bit market seemed
to die overnight, some beasts called the Imega, or was it Umiger? Omega?
no, that's it, the Amiga, and Atari ST had wowed all the punters away from
those lovely Speccys. By the way, most of my games, except my first, Classic
Trainer, were written on a Spectrum + with a Micro-Drive, bloody great those
were. I still have the MD cartridges somewhere. CT was written on the
original rubber beer mat 48K. I never took to the 128K much, though I had
one.
Where was I ? Oh yes, Cup Manager was an add-on really to The Manager,
I didn't have enough memory in The Manager for Cup Competions, I didn't
like multi-loading for some reason? So I did the games seperately.
As far as I know these two games were the first games to interact with each
other. I impressed myself & others with this stunning feat of originality
and deftness of code! But seriously it was quite easy to do, and quite
inovative at the time. What you did was build your team up in The Manager
and save your team out to be loaded into Cup Manager, if you wanted to.
Sadly, it was crap and never sold very well.
There are cheats in Trainer, but I can't remeber what they are.
All my games have a cheat where you type in a word at an input, so don't
waste your time pressing all the keys. If you suss it out let me know.
If you break into the listing let me know how. I know there is away, I
left a backdoor in there somewhere but I can't remember.
I am getting old you see.
Anyway, I would like to say big thanx to Andy for doing the Snap and the Docs
cheers m8, or these games would of just rotted away in the back of my
cupboard and never come back to haunt you lot :-)
Steve Bye, Sept 96
