(EXCLUSIVE RELEASE - NEVER SEEN ANYWHERE BEFORE!)
CLASSIC PUNTER - SPECTRUM VERSION DOCS
Docs and Snapshot by Andy Gibson (AGAS Productions)
Released with the consent of Steve Bye - Author/Programmer of the
game `Classic Punter'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before I start the doc to Punter proper, I would like to tell you a
little bit about Steve Bye. If anyone has heard of F1
Software/Licenceware/Shareware, then chances are that you already
know who Steve Bye is.
Both Steve and his wife Belinda are the proprietors of F1 Software
and good friends of mine and really nice and honest peeps to boot.
Before Steve founded F1, he used to own his own computer shop and
even before that, he was a commercial programmer for some of the
classic platforms of yesteryear such as the C64, Amstrad and the
dear old (and much loved) Spectrum.
I have written a list of all Steve's main productions to date below
for you to look over and maybe you'll even have some of the
original cassettes/disks listed below. (collectors items now
Although Steve has now re-written/programmed Punter for the Amiga,
the original Spectrum version is still a classic in its own right.
Steve kindly sent me an original cassette version of the Speccy
cassette which I took a snapshot of for all to share.
Obviously the new Amiga version is far superior to this original
version, but there are still quite a lot of die hard Speccy
fans/users out there who collect both original and snapshot
versions of these classic games.
I'll ask Steve for some more of his originals to snapshot one day
and hopefully you will see 'em soon.
In the meantime, here is the original Spectrum cassette docs for
Classic Punter which was released via the GTI Software label (1989)
(the snapshot should also be supplied for you to play with ZXam V2)
LOADING INSTRUCTIONS
Type LOAD "" and press ENTER. If using 128K Spectrum, select 48K
Basic.
OBJECT OF THE GAME
To become a "Classic Punter", by winning £1000000, or if playing a
2-player game, to win more than your opponent.
On each race, you are given the opportunity to select WIN, BET or
FORECAST, where you try to predict first and second places for
higher odds.
With a Win Bet, you have the choice of S.P. or Tote odds; S.P.
being the odds already quoted. Tote odds could be higher or lower
- with skill, you may be able to judge which! Follow on screen
prompts to make your selections. Press ENTER to start the race
when the horses line up, and to clear the screens.
To help you (1-player game only), there is the DUBIOUS TIPS SERVICE
offered at certain points during the game. The more you play the
tipster,the more likely it is the tip will turn out to be a winner,
but as you know in racing, nothing is a dead cert!
If you want to risk betting big money, (or if you're running out!),
the PUNTER LOAN is available. Be careful though - repayment is 10%
weekly PLUS 10% of any winnings!
The game ends when either the selected number of races has been
run, when a player goes broke or when you win a million and become
a CLASSIC PUNTER!
At the end of each game, your cash total will be converted into
points, and the winner declared.
Notes from Steve Bye
Classic Punter was my second game andcertainly not my best. AS I hd just had
Classic Trainer accepted for commercial release by GTI I was very excited
and decided to knock up another and strike while the iron was hot.
I worked on Punter from when I got up to when I went to bed for weeks
(remember I wasstill learning to program, so every new problem I came across
meant resorting to manuals,books, mags and experimenting, some probs took
days to suss out) Mostof the time my best pal at the time, Mick Sparks,
was play testing the game as it was written, that lad would find everything
,he was brilliant, I am quite sure there are very few bugs in any of my GTI
releases as Mick playtested in producing then it was play tested by GTI
staff all over again when it was finished, apart from enhancements I don't
think they ever found a bug, amazing. Cheers Mick.( I saw him alright for his
help don't worry)
Anyway, as I was saying I coded Punter in a few weeks presented it to Tony
Locke of GTI and It was accepted.
There should be a cheat in Punter, but I can't remeber what they are.
All my games have a cheat where you type in a word at an input, so don't
waste your time pressing all the keys. If you suss it out let me know.
If you break into the listing let me know how. I know there is away, I
left a backdoor in there somewhere but I can't remember.
I am getting old you see.
Anyway, I would like to say big thanx to Andy for doing the Snap and the Docs
cheers m8, or these games would of just rotted away in the back of my
cupboard and never come back to haunt you lot :-)
Steve Bye, Sept 96
