  78. INSTALLATION

  80.     After unpacking I connected the mouse, keyboard, power cord
  81. and my existing SVGA monitor.  As I anticipated, there was no picture.
  82. The default screenmode being PAL, the monitor couldn't handle it.
  83.  
  84.     I disconnected all cables and dragged the 16 Kg (35 lb)
  85. computer to the living room where I plugged it to the TV set by a
  86. modulator.
  87.  
  88.     After changing the screenmode I returned the computer to the
  89. room where I work.
  90.  
  91.     Before installing my expansion cards and drives into the tower
  92. casing I had to test drive the computer to see that it works.  First
  93. the screen filled with different nationalities' flags.  The system
  94. asked me to choose the language and after that the keyboard layout.
  95. Then I got the familiar Workbench on the screen.

  97.     I installed my old hard drive, CD-ROM, MFC3 and 12 MB
  98. additional memory.  It went mostly like a breeze, except that there
  99. were no extra 3"1/2 mounting sets, so I had to replace the DD floppy
  100. drive temporarily with my Quantum Maverick.

  103. REVIEW
  104.  
  105.     The computer is shipped with the Magic software pack and Scala
  106. MM300.  The Magic Pack includes (according to the manuals):

  117.     I understand that the tower casing is a standard PC case used
  118. by Escom.  Opening the case reveals six 5"1/4 drive bays, two of which
  119. are occupied by the floppy drive and hard drive.  The mounting is done
  120. by attaching a rail on each side of the drive.  The drive is kept in
  121. place in the bay by metal clips which are on the end of the rails.
  122. It's real easy to insert and remove the drive with the rails attached.
  123. The casing has two fans, the first blows air in from the bottom front
  124. corner and the other blows air out from the top back corner.

  126.     The A4000T is shipped with 4 MB fast and 2 chip memory.  The
  127. motherboard has four SIMM sockets.  Without changing any jumpers, you
  128. can install 4 and 8 MB SIMMs.  1 or 2 MB SIMMs require a change in
  129. jumper settings.  The maximum amount of memory on the motherboard is
  130. 16 MB fast and 2 MB chip.
  131.  
  132.     The processor module is a standard A3640.  It can be fitted
  133. into an A3000 or an A4000 when upgrading the A4000T with a new
  134. processor.

  136.     The audio and video and disk I/O are on separate cards which
  137. attach to the motherboard with a special connector.  On the audio
  138. board there is an input connector for CD-ROM/DSP audio.  The sound is
  139. mixed with the Amiga audio so that you can listen to audio CD's with
  140. the equipment attached to your Amiga's RCA connectors.  There is no
  141. external connector for an external floppy drive.  The connection
  142. exists on the I/O-board, but you'll have to solder a short cable and a
  143. connector or a 90-degree connector.  Inside the casing there is a
  144. cable for two internal floppy drives each of which can be DD or HD.
  145. The IDE connector is on the motherboard.
  146.  
  147.     There are five Zorro III slots, two video slots and four PC/AT
  148. slots.  Three of the PC/AT slots are in line with Zorro slots.

  150.     The front panel has:
  151.  
  152.         - a key/mouse lock with a very simple key
  153.         - the power, reset and internal speaker
  154.           mute switches
  155.         - power, SCSI bus and internal speaker leds.
  156.  
  157.     The internal speaker is really small, as you might expect in a
  158. PC casing.  The bass is quite nonexistent.  The plastic front panel
  159. has a door with a darkened window.

  161.     The Kickstart and Workbench have changed a bit.  The guys at
  162. AIC Systems suspected that the IDE controller software didn't fit into
  163. Kickstart ROM without taking something out.  Workbench.library resides
  164. now on disk.

  166.     The two-button mouse is the same model shipped with A1200.  It
  167. looks remotely like a drop of water on a vertical plane, smooth and
  168. aerodynamic.

  187.     According to Dr.  Peter Kittel the documentation is the
  188. original Commodore documentation (I suspect excluding the
  189. A4000T manual and the Magic Pack documentation).

  191.     One thing I couldn't find from the documentation is which
  192. way the floppy cable should be connected.  Physically it fits
  193. both ways to the drive.  The documentation is mostly quite
  194. detailed and seems to be written for a beginner.

  199.     - You can use the cheap IDE CD-ROMs, IDE hard drives and
  200.       Jedec SIMMs.
  201.     - The casing is quite practical.

  204. DISLIKES AND SUGGESTIONS

  206.     - No more "standard Amiga color" casing
  207.  
  208.     - The DD drive is quite useless beside installing
  209.       commercial software.

  211.     - The keyboard is stiffer than my A3000 keyboard
  212.       (so I switched keyboards).
  213.  
  214.     - The mouse is not sensitive (so I kept the old one)

  216.     - There is no external connector for an external floppy drive.

  219. COMPARISON TO OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS
  220.  
  221.     Compared to my A3000 the A4000T has very much room for
  222. expansion devices.  The A3000 is a very beautiful machine, which I
  223. can't unfortunately say for the A4000T.  Though it looks more
  224. professional with it's huge size it lacks the elegant design of the
  225. A3000.

  228. BUGS

  230.     The DD-floppy is connected through a small circuit board, which
  231. fixes a bug concerning track-loading games.

  234. VENDOR SUPPORT
  235.  
  236.     The guys at AIC Systems are very helpful and they know their
  237. merchandise well.  I have done some projects for their advertising
  238. and I'm also translating the system software in Finnish.  I
  239. made this review on my own initiative because I consider the
  240. comp.sys.amiga.reviews very handy.

  248. CONCLUSIONS

  250.     I do 3D animation and graphics so the A4000T is a good
  251. workstation.  I'm waiting anxiously for my '060 turbo
  252. board, but I also like the speed increase from an
  253. A3000 '030 to an A4000T '040.
