  1. RDB-Salv - Salvage of lost RDSK/RDB data

  4. INTRO
  5.    Have  you ever lost your RigidDiskBlock? Therefore you know that it is
  6.    very  difficult to restore this data if you don't have a backup of it.
  7.    Many  people even think that it is almost impossible to restore a lost
  8.    RigidDiskBlock, but this is not the case.
  9.  
  10.    Should there be a repeated loss of your RigidDiskBlock, you might want
  11.    to  try  out  RDB-Salv  -  a professional and user friendly program to
  12.    restore lost RigidDiskBlocks.

  14.    Since  a  backup  is  better  than  any  attempt  to restore anything,
  15.    RDB-Salv   additionally   includes   a   backup   tool  for  restoring
  16.    RigidDiskBlocks, which saves the RDB onto a file.

  19. REQUIREMENTS
  20.    RDB-Salv requires OS 2.04 or better. It should work with any hard disk
  21.    system (SCSI, AT-Bus, OMTI, ...) that supports trackdisk commands.

  24. FUNCTIONS
  25.    - Backup RigidDiskBlock to file
  26.    - Restore RigidDiskBlock from file
  27.    - Read  RigidDiskBlock  (optionally  scans hard disk while looking for
  28.      lost  RDBs).  This  function  additionally  provides  the  following
  29.      features:
  30.       o Write MountLists of all partition blocks found
  31.       o Mount partitions of all partition blocks found
  32.       o Add lost partition block(s) to RDSK
  33.       o Write whole RDSK
  34.      If  any  partition has not been mounted during booting time, you may
  35.      also  use this function on order to mount it later. This is a useful
  36.      side effect. ;-)
  37.    - Read DeviceList
  38.      If   you   have  just  overwritten  your  RigidDiskBlocks,  but  all
  39.      partitions are still mounted, you can in that way try to restore the
  40.      data from the DeviceList. The following functions are available:
  41.       o Write MountLists of all partitions found
  42.       o Add lost partitions to RDSK
  43.       o Write whole RDSK
  44.    - Salvage of RigidDiskBlocks
  45.      This  function  scans the whole hard disk and looks for any AmigaDOS
  46.      partition.  My A1000 scans about 100 MB per minute. If any partition
  47.      has been found, it will be displayed at once. Overlapping partitions
  48.      will be marked. Unused spaces are shown, too.

  51. FEATURES
  52.    - Easy to use.
  53.    - Very good manual (printed and as AmigaGuide document).
  54.    - Support of very large SCSI hard disks (>4 GB) through HD_SCSICMD.
  55.    - Support  of  very  large  media,  if  they  support  the "new style"
  56.      standard and implement NSCMD_TD_READ64.
  57.    - Support of blocksize 512, 1024, 2048, ...
  58.    - Use of locale.library, if available.
  59.    - Support of many languages.
  60.    - Fontsensitive GUI.
  61.    - Each  function  that  changes anything on your hard disk brings up a
  62.      requester before changing anything.
  63.    - Many  workarounds  for  buggy hard disk devices. This should support
  64.      nearly any hard disk system.

  67. LIMITATIONS
  68.    When  using "Salvage", RDB-Salv can only find lost AmigaDOS partitions
  69.    (DOS/0 to DOS/5). It is possible to add support for other filesystems,
  70.    but  I will only do this if enough people register. Furthermore, it is
  71.    necessary  that  all  partitions of the hard disk contain "Reserved=2"
  72.    and  "PreAlloc=0",  otherwise  you might run into trouble. But I don't
  73.    know anybody with any other value there.

  75.    Many  scsi  devices and other hard disk devices are buggy. They do not
  76.    handle  TD_GETGEOMETRY  correctly.  I've  tried  to do my best to work
  77.    around  these  bugs,  but I cannot guarantee that it really works with
  78.    _every_  hard disk system. Should you encounter any difficulties, send
  79.    me  a  bugreport  and  I will do my best to support your system in the
  80.    next version.

  87.    Programmers  might  want  to  get  a registered version of RDB-Salv in
  88.    exchange  with one of their registered programs. However I only accept
  89.    _good_  programs  which  follow  the style guide rules and are not too
  90.    hacky.
