2- INTRODUCTION
================
THE RETAIL VERSION
------------------
Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns is a real-time strategy game set in the fantasy world, Khaldun, in which you are one of an immortal race known as the Kohan. A series of massive cataclysms lead to your race's demise and it is up to you to restore their reign. You are reawakened to a new world very much unlike the one you once knew and you must solve the mystery of your race's destruction in order to return the Kohan to their rightful glory.
Company Based Combat System
You have the ability to combine over 40 different units to create thousands of unique companies. By commanding your companies as single units, you reduce
the click factor inherent in many real-time strategy games. In addition, the company's formation can alter its Attack
Value, Visual Range, Zone of Control, and its morale.
Classic Military Concepts
Morale: will decrease in combat when units are lost and certain spells are cast.
Supply: Only a company "In Supply" will restore injured or lost units. Being "Out of Supply" makes it difficult to mount a campaign against targets far from your supply zone.
Terrain: can slowdown the movement of a company, affect supply and visual ranges, and provide defensive bonuses.
Distinctive Economic Model
Most units and buildings have a continuing upkeep cost drawing upon the player's natural resources, rather than a lump sum paid upon creation. Cities contain buildings such as the Stone Quarry, Woodmill, and the Blacksmith,
that provide resources at a steady rate. By balancing resource supply and demand, the more adept player will be
rewarded with a successful economy that can maintain a large standing army.
Features
- Multiplayer supports up to 8 players who can choose from one of four factions, all struggling for supremacy
in a war-torn world over LAN or Internet.
- Command large armies of archers, footmen, cavalry, and even legions of undead.
- Over 40 unique units with over 300 frames of animation each.
- Wage war in multiple environments that include lush forests, rolling hills, and barren desert.
- Scores of magical spells ranging from protective blessings to devastating fireballs.
- Fully functional editor with random map generator that allows players to custom make their own campaigns, single
scenarios and even death match maps.

5- MULTIPLAYER
===============
THE CONNECTION MENU
-------------------
The top section of the menu lists all available multiplayer games. The window in the bottom-left corner displays information
about each of these games.
Click the filter dropdown arrow to display a list of LAN, Internet, and specific Internet games (for example, Internet Death
Match games).
Join: Click this button to attempt to join the game you have selected.
Host: Click this button to start a new Multiplayer game.
Refresh: Click this button to re-try your connection.
Gamespy: This will open a dialog box asking you to confirm your selection of launching the Gamespy Arcade.
Note: This option will be grayed out if you do not have Gamespy Arcade already installed. The Kohan Demo program
group has a link to the Gamespy web page (www.gamespyarcade.com/launch/notinstalled.shtml).
Exit: Click this button to return to the Main Menu.
THE GAME SETUP SCREEN
---------------------
Player Name: If you select your player name, you will be given the option to Change Name. If you click on an Open
slot, you can add AI players to the game.
Faction: A faction represents your character's allegiance within the splintered society of Khaldun. Each faction
provides different units and bonuses. If you select Random, a faction is assigned to your player automatically.
Note: Only the Ceyah and Nationalist factions are available in the demo. The full retail version also
includes Council and Royalist. You can also experience Kohan in Observer mode. This allows you to view the
entire game map and watch the drama unfold without getting involved in the action.
Team: Select the team that you wish to join. The host can use this to set certain AI players to be teamed together or
teamed with you.
Ping: Indicates the time in milliseconds between the host's computer and each player (network latency).
GAME SETTINGS
-------------
You can also define your game in greater detail by adjusting the values of various settings on the right side of the screen.
Any changes are indicated in the scrollable window at the bottom of the screen.
Difficulty Level: Determines the strength of the game's AI players. Select either Easy, Medium or Hard.
Allow Cheats: Select this box if you want to allow cheats in your campaign.
Diplomacy: Select this box to allow political relationships between players to change during the game. Disable
Diplomacy to lock all players to their starting teams.
Fog of War: Select this box to enable fog of war in your campaign. Disabling this option allows you to see the entire
map.
Only when all players have selected the Ready button and downloaded the map can play begin. If the host selects a non-random
map that any player does not have, an attempt will be made automatically to transfer the map to that player. In this case,
the Ready indicator is replaced by a percentage figure indicating the progress of the download. When any game setting is
changed, all Ready indicators are cleared automatically.
STARTING CONDITIONS
-------------------
Gold: You can define the amount of gold (0-9999) that each team starts with at the beginning of the game. The default
starting gold amount is 500.
Heroes: You can control multiple Heroes in your game. There are a total of 40 Heroes in retail version of Kohan, only
5 are included in the demo. The default number of starting Heroes is one.
Outposts: This sets the number of outposts surrounding your starting city when the game begins. While having outposts
to protect your city at the start of a game is comforting, keep in mind that outposts like everything else in
Kohan have an upkeep cost.
VICTORY CONDITIONS
------------------
In Kohan, you can define how the game is won. Select from any of the following:
Single or Allied victory: In this mode an alliance can win by eliminating all non-allied players, or a single player
can win by eliminating, or by being allied with, all other players.
Single Victory only: By using this condition, only one player can win the game.
Entire Alliance Must Win: Selecting this option requires all surviving players to be allied to win the game.
When playing in Allied Victory mode, the objectives listed below are computed as alliance totals.
Target Gold: Select the amount of gold that must be obtained. The first player to amass the required amount wins the
game.
Target Cities: Select the number of cities that must be captured. The first player to seize the required number of
cities wins the game. Only player-controlled cities count towards victory.
Target City %: Select the percentage of all cities in the campaign world that must be captured. The first player to
seize the required percentage of cities wins the campaign. Only player-controlled cities count towards
victory.
REWARDS
-------
You can set the rewards that will be granted to players when they destroy monster lairs and explore ancient temples and
ruins. The player will receive gold, a new technology, or a Kohan amulet, depending on the active rewards.
Monsters: This toggle defines whether or not random monster lairs will be seeded onto the map during creation. If you have
not selected a random map, disabling this option removes the monster lairs from the map.
Seed Gold: When this toggle is on, gold rewards are seeded onto the map.
Seed Heroes: When this toggle is on, amulet rewards are seeded onto the map.
Seed Technologies: When this toggle is on, technology rewards are seeded onto the map.
MAP SETTINGS
------------
Kohan allows you to load several default map settings allowing you to enter the action quickly. Below is a brief explanation
of each.
Use Scenario Settings: When a map is created, the preferred game settings are recorded. Select this option if you want to play
a map the way the designer had intended.
Custom Settings: Allows you to change the options detailed above.
Deathmatch: Allied victory or last player standing.
Bloodbath: Last player standing. The Politics option is disabled for Bloodbath matches.
Conquer: Seize 75% of the cities on the map.
Gnomes: Be the first player to amass 2000 gold. The in-game stockpile limit is disabled for Gnomes matches.
THE OPTIONS MENU
----------------
Use the horizontal scroll bars to adjust the following:
Game Speed: Adjust the speed at which characters move and fight. Game speed ranges from a very slow 25% to the
hyperactive 400% of normal speed.
Scroll Speed: Adjust the speed at which you can scroll to survey the terrain.
Message Fade Speed: Adjust the speed at which displayed information vanishes from the screen.
Finally, you can use the horizontal scroll bars to control the volume of the following sounds: Main, Sound Effects,
Music, Voice-Over, and the Maximum Number of Messages seen at one time.

7- KNOWN ISSUES & INFO
=======================
WINDOWS RELATED ISSUES
----------------------
a) In the event that the Microsoft Office toolbar appears in front of the
Kohan game screen, you will have to disable the Toolbar before starting
the game.
b) On many systems, there is a utility named FindFast.exe installed that
regularly runs and keeps track of all the Microsoft Office files.
This may slow down the game performance. If it is the case with your system,
you may want to disable this utility.
TROUBLESHOOTING
---------------
a) DirectX
DirectX 7 or later is required. While Kohan may be able to run with older versions
of DirectX 3, you may experience problems. The latest version of DirectX can be obtained
from http://www.microsoft.com/directx
If you experience problems after the new Microsoft DirectX drivers have
been installed, please contact your local Microsoft subsidiary, or write to:
Microsoft Customer Sales and Service
One Microsoft Way
Redmond, WA 98052-6399, USA
USA telephone: 1-800-426-9400
International telephone: ++1-206-882-8080
b) Drivers
If you should experience problems while running Kohan, make sure that you have the latest drivers for your hardware from the appropriate manufacturer -
particularly for your Sound card and Video card.
c) Video Performance
You may experience decreased frame rates in 5+ player games on large maps
with several companies. If you do not have a high-end machine, we suggest
the following options to improve performance:
1) Turn off music: go to the Options interface and reduce volume to 0
2) Turn off all zones
3) Avoid playing games with more than 4 players or games on large maps
4) Keep both the left and right panel up at all times (play with a smaller
view area)
d) Multiplayer Performance
You may experience lag problems (i.e. "Contact Lost") if the host does not
have a high bandwidth connection. These lag problems are related to the
number of players, the number of companies, and whether or not your game is
listed publicly on GameSpy. If you are hosting a game on a low bandwidth
connection, we suggest the
following options to improve multiplayer performance:
1) Avoid playing games with more than 4 players on a 56K, or 2 players on a
28K, particularly on large maps with several companies.
2) If playing large maps with lots of companies, reduce the number of
computer AI players (each AI player consumes bandwidth)
3) Before launching from the chat interface into the game, disable the
"Public" checkbox. Alternatively, run Kohan with the command line parameter
"nolistinprogress". Kohan keeps your game registered with GameSpy during
game play, so that it is still receiving GameSpy queries. This is an
additional bandwidth cost which is a factor if you receive lots of queries
and have a low bandwidth connection.
4) For command line parameters, we should ensure "nolistinprogress" is listed.
This parameter tells Kohan to unregister itself from GameSpy during
game play.
e) Reporting Problems
Kohan generates a lot of information to help us track down problems. When
reporting a crash or other problem, please build a ZIP file with the following data
from the folder where Kohan is installed:
For all problems:
- LOGS folder
- KOHAN.CFG file
- screenshots if appropriate, generated with ALT-S. Screenshot files have
the form KOHANxxxx.BMP
- LAST FILM.TGF file from the FILMS folder. This is the film from the last
game you played, if you had used the "Save Film" option, then instead
include the appropriate film.
If it is related to a campaign game:
- CAMPAIGN folder
If it is related to a Custom Scenario or Multiplayer game:
- the appropriate TGM file from the SAVE folder if you have a save game
demonstrating the problem
- the appropriate TGM file from the MAPS folder if this is related to a
custom-made map
KNOWN PROBLEMS
--------------
a) Uninstalling
Kohan creates several files and directories once the game is run. These files go unnoticed by the installer and must be
be deleted manually after uninstalling the demo.
b) Graphics
To skip the company logos without skipping the game intro, use the space
bar as opposed to the [Esc] key. The [Esc] key will skip all videos and
send you directly to the Kohan main game menu.
1) When scrolling the radar, some radar blips may appear to
jitter.
2) On some ATI Rage cards, you may experience problems such as:
- the cursor leaves trails as it is moved around
- some interface menus show vertical or horizontal lines
These problems will not impact game play.
c) System
1) If you experience screen corruption or desktop corruption
when using ALT+TAB, you should first obtain the latest drivers
for your video adapter. If the problem persists, you should avoid
using ALT+TAB (or use the "cooperative" command line parameter, but
that requires you to change your desktop resolution - see the
"Command Line Parameters" section).
2) Special punctuation characters on non-US standard keyboards
don't work.
d) Sound
1) On some older sound cards, some sounds may be played as a loud
hiss. This is a random problem. You should obtain the latest drivers
for your sound card. You may also try to fix the problem by quitting
Kohan and restarting the game.
2) There is no reverse stereo option.
3) On some older sound cards you may hear a "pop" when a voice-over
begins play.
4) On some older sound cards, the master volume slider on the Options
interface does nothing. You should update to the latest drivers for
your sound card.
e) Game Play
1) Locked formations are not saved
2) The sell cursor does not work on the city management interface
COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS
-----------------------
You may add parameters to the Kohan command line to customize startup
or to resolve problems. To add parameters,
1) Right-click on the Kohan shortcut, click Properties, and then
select the Shortcut tab.
2) In the Target box, enter the desired parameters after the existing
command line text. Parameters must be separated by a space.
E.g. "c:\program files\kohan\kohan.exe" noreschange
Multiplayer:
* hostdefault - Host a game on the default port
* host [x] - Host a game on port [x]
* hostname [x] - Optional. If hosting a game, call it [x]
* name [x] - Optional. Use the handle [x]
* connect [x] - Connect to host at IP/address [x]
* nolistinprogress - Prevents your game from being listed on GameSpy during play.
If you have a low bandwidth connection, GameSpy queries during game play
can cause lag. This will ignore those queries.
Others
* cooperative - Run Kohan in cooperative mode. It will run a
bit slower, but you are less likely to have video problems, and alt-tabbing
will be faster. However, your desktop must be in 1024x768 @ 16bit. This
selection also enables "noreschange".
* noreschange - Do not change resolutions for the cinematics
(some video cards may have problems remaining in 1024x768).
* nodiskspacecheck - skip the disk space check when Kohan is in
run.
* monitorcheck - test if your system can handle the resolution required
by Kohan
* showfilm [x] - immediately start film [x] after launching Kohan.
E.g. kohan showfilm "films\some film.tgf".
* channels [x] - change the number of sound channels that Kohan uses.
The default is 32, but you may be able to improve performance by
reducing this number to 8 or 16.
E.g. kohan channels 8
