|RNature and climate:|N Vulcanic island 500 km northeast of Iceland. Covered by lava and ashes. Highest point is the volcano Beerenberg, 2 277 m.a.s.l. which is usually covered with snow. The volcano that had had no eruption in modern times had an unexpected eruption in 1970 and another in 1984.
Average temperature in January -5°C and in July +5°C.

|REconomy:|N On Jan Mayen was a meteorological station built in 1921 and two radio stations for navigation, a Loran-C-station built in 1959 and a Console-station built in 1968.
|RHistory:|N Jan Mayen was probably discovered by Henry Hudson in 1608. It got its name from the Dutch whalercaptain Jan Jacobsz May who visited the island in 1614,
1929 Norway claimed the island and it was officially recognized a Norwegian dependency in 1930.
