|RHistory:|N During the Spanish-American War 1898 the USA helped the Cubans against Spain. Many of the US troops landed at Guantanamo Bay.
After the war Cuba was under US administration during four years before the independent nation of Cuba was proclaimed. When the US troops in 1903 left Cuba a treaty was signed that allowed the USA to rent Guantanamo Bay as a naval base for 100 years. This treaty was prolonged in 1934.
After the communist revolution and seize of power in 1959, Cuba has refused to accept the rent of 5000US$ per year, and have requested the USA to leave the base. Cuba has also threatened to conquer the base.
Nowadays there are fortifications and air strips within the base.
