Why AdVert?
Yes, I know, weird name. But if you consider that it's an ADdresser
conVERTer, the name makes sense (it also sort of makes up for Addresser's
lame name.)
What does it do?
AdVert will take the names list that was created using Addresser V1.0
and convert it to the new format that Addresser V2.0 uses. Because of the
major changes that have been made for Addresser V2.0, the original Addresser
names list can not be properly read in (in other words, you have a choice,
use AdVert or re-type ALL of the names you originally had stored with
Addresser V1.0).
With future releases of Addresser (and AdVert) I hope to make AdVert
much more useful, rather than the simple version patch it currently is. In
particular, I would like to be able to convert name lists from other "address
book" programs (or even text files) into Addresser lists. But that's a ways
off. For now AdVert has one and only one use.
How do I use AdVert:
Using AdVert is quite simple, actually. First, copy AdVert directly to
where Addresser is stored by either dragging it's icon or issuing the
CLI/Shell copy command. (NOTE: AdVert MUST be in the same directory as the
original copy of Addresser. AdVert needs to find the Addresser.Names file to
convert it.)
After copying AdVert to its proper location, run it (either by double
clicking on its workbench icon, or by typing AdVert in the CLI/Shell.)
Once AdVert has been launched, it will automatically make a copy of the
original Addresser.Names file (in case something goes wrong while AdVert is
running). It will then check to see if the Addresser.Names version is one
that needs to be converted to V2.0 format. Since only two versions of
Addresser have existed in public use (as of this writing at least), you stand
a good chance of AdVert recognizing the format and converting the file. If,
for some odd reason, AdVert decides your file can't be converted, please
contact me (my address and phone number is listed above).
After the conversion process is complete changes may be made to
Addresser's configuration before saving the converted file. I strongly
suggest this since many of the settings that are now available with Addresser
V2.0 were not available in Addresser V1.0 and the default values that are
given may not be suitable to your system's configuration. The configuration
requestors may be accessed through the buttons along the left hand side of
the AdVert window. The buttons are:
General: Modem initialization and dialing strings,
Iconify on startup option, and access to the
Printer, Groups, Clips and Formats configuration
requestors.
Printer: Settings for label sizing and page type, Envelope
size, sending address location and access to the
return address setting requestor.
Groups: Names for all six grouping buttons available in
Addresser V2.0.
Clips: Clipboard support settings requestor, and
Formats: Address format settings. Only pre-set address
formats are available in AdVert. Addresser lets
you create your own custom address formats.
View: Lists all the names that have been successfully
converted from V1.0 to V2.0.
Exit: Save converted file and exit from AdVert
Most of these requestors (with the exception of the formats requestor)
are identical to the configuration requestors in Addresser V2.0. A detailed
description of their operation is available in the Addresser V2.0
documentation.
The operation of the Formats requestor is a little different than the
one available in Addresser V2.0. To create a format, select any one of the
ten format spaces in the drop-down menu. Then click on a button under the
formats heading. A representation of the format will be shown. The format's
name may also be changed at this time
Again, I suggest at least reviewing the settings before saving and
exiting form AdVert. Especially the formats, groups and return address
settings, since they are completely new features for Addresser V2.0, and work
best using your own settings.
The names available in the list may be viewed by selecting the View
button. A window will pop up listing the names available in the Addresser
names list. Each name can marked or unmarked by double clicking on it.
What's coming up:
Well, as was stated in Addresser.doc, I plan on making Addresser even
more powerful. Unfortunately, some of the features I want to add to
Addresser will require AmigaDos 2.0. And so, (warning, this is tricky logic
here), I might as well follow Commodore's design guidelines, which may
further change the Addresser names list file structure (especially if I do
implement multiple phone books in the next version).
As for AdVert specific features, well, I plan on improving the user
interface a bit (this one was a bit of a rush job to get done). As well as
adding conversion support for other address database formats (if I can figure
out their file structure). And, as usual, I am open to suggestions.
