  47. * 1.  OVERVIEW
  48. ************************************************************
  49. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs
  50. to the target system the Windows* INF files that outline to 
  51. the operating system how the Intel(R) chipset components will 
  52. be configured.  This is needed for the proper functioning of
  53. the following features:
  54.  
  55.    - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
  56.    - AGP Support
  57.    - IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
  58.    - SATA Storage Support
  59.    - USB Support
  60.    - Identification of Intel(R) chipset components in 
  61.      the Device Manager
  62.  
  63. This software can be installed in three modes: Interactive,
  64. Silent and Unattended Preload.  The Interactive Mode 
  65. requires user input during installation; the Silent Mode and
  66. Unattended Preload do not.  
  67.  
  68. Additionally, this software offers a set of command line
  69. flag options that enables extended installation functionality. 
  70. The command line flags are not case sensitive.  See Section 4 
  71. for detailed descriptions of these flags.

  73. Important Note:
  74. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility is 
  75. distributed in two formats -- self extracting .EXE files
  76. (INFINST_xxx.EXE) or compressed .ZIP files (INFINST_xxx.ZIP). 
  77. Depending on which distribution format is being executed, 
  78. the command-line syntax may differ. See Section 4 for more details.

  82. * 2.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 
  83. ************************************************************
  84. 1.  The software included with this distribution package is 
  85.     designed to operate with the following chipset 
  86.     configurations:
  87.     
  88. Note: Please refer to the release notes for the list of supported chipsets.
  89.       
  90.               
  91. 2.  One of the following operating systems must be 
  92.     fully installed and running on the system
  93.     before installing this software:
  94.

  103.     To verify which operating system has been installed onto 
  104.     the target system, follow the steps below:
  105.  
  106.     a.  Click on Start.
  107.     b.  Select Settings.
  108.     c.  Select Control Panel.
  109.     d.  Double-click on the System icon.
  110.     e.  Click on the General system properties tab.
  111.     f.  Verify, which OS has been installed by reading
  112.         the System information.
  113.                               
  114. 3.  It is recommended that the software be installed on 
  115.     systems with at least 32MB of system memory when using 
  116.     Windows* 98SE and Windows* Me. Windows* 2000 and Windows* XP
  117.     require at least 64MB of system memory.
  118.  
  119.  
  120. 4.  It is recommended that there be a minimum of 5MB of hard
  121.     disk space on the system in order to install this software.
  122.  
  123. 5.  Check the System Requirements.  The operating system 
  124.     must be fully installed and running on the system before
  125.     running this software.
  126.  
  127. 6.  Close any running applications.  Otherwise, you may
  128.     experience difficulties.
  129.  
  130. 7.  It is recommended that the Intel(R) Chipset Software 
  131.     Installation Utility be installed onto the target system 
  132.     prior to the installation of other drivers.
  133.  
  134.  
  135. Please check with your system provider to determine which 
  136. operating system and Intel(R) chipset are used in your system.

  140. * 3.  CONTENTS OF THE DISTRIBUTION PACKAGE

  142. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility package 
  143. contains the following items:

  159. * 4.  LIST OF AVAILABLE COMMAND LINE FLAG OPTIONS
  160. ************************************************************
  161. The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility supports  
  162. several command line flags for various installation options. 
  163. All command line flags and parameters must be separated by a 
  164. space, except for the language code after the '-L' flag.
  165.  
  166. Due to the different distribution formats available for the
  167. Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility, the command
  168. line flag syntax may vary:
  169.  
  170. 1. Self-Extracting .EXE Distribution:
  171.       When installing this software using the .EXE 
  172.       distribution, an extra '-A' must be appended to the 
  173.       INFINST_xxx.EXE program call (i.e. INFINST_ENU.EXE -A) 
  174.       in order to successfully pass command line parameters.
  175.  
  176.    Note: The extra '-A' flag for the self-extracting .EXE 
  177.          package is DIFFERENT from the '-A' command line flag 
  178.          option described below, under Compressed .ZIP
  179.          Distribution.        
  180.  
  181.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  182.                described below, the installation program 
  183.                should be invoked as follows:  
  184.           
  185.                INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A (optional -P)
  186.  
  187. 2. Compressed .ZIP Distribution:
  188.       When installing this software using the .ZIP 
  189.       distribution, there is no need to append any extra 
  190.       flags to the SETUP.EXE program call in order to pass 
  191.       command line flags.
  192.  
  193.       Example: To extract INF files using the '-A' flag 
  194.                described below, the installation program 
  195.                should be invoked as follows:  
  196.                         
  197.                SETUP.EXE -A (optional -P)
  198.  
  199. Below is a list of all the available command line flags that
  200. may be used with the program call.  Note that the '-L' and 
  201. the '-S' flags MUST be specified at the end of the command 
  202. line flag list.
  203.  
  204. Flag            Description
  205. ----            -----------
  206. -?              Help flag.  Displays the list of available 
  207.                 command line flags.  This parameter works in 
  208.                 the Interactive Mode only.  
  209.  
  210. -A              Extracts the INF files and README.TXT to 
  211.                 either "C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst" or 
  212.                 the <Installation Path> directory specified 
  213.                 using the '-P' flag. The software will 
  214.                 NOT install these INF files to the system.  
  215.                 This flag can be combined only with the '-P' 
  216.                 flag option. All other options will be 
  217.                 ignored if the '-A' flag is specified. 
  218.                 This parameter works in either Silent Mode 
  219.                 or Interactive Mode.
  220.  
  221. -B              Automatically reboots the system after 
  222.                 installation. This flag is ignored if '-A' 
  223.                 flag is specified. This parameter works in 
  224.                 either Silent Mode or Interactive Mode.
  225.  
  226. -H<mode>
  227.                 This flag enables DMA Mode for an IDE device.
  228.  
  229. -L<LangCode>
  230.                 Forces the InstallShield* user interface to 
  231.                 display the specified language during setup.  
  232.                 Note that there should be NO spaces between 
  233.                 '-L' and the 4-digit language code (see 
  234.                 below). This flag and the '-S' flag must be 
  235.                 placed at the end of the command line flag 
  236.                 list. This parameter works in Interactive 
  237.                 Mode only.
  238.  
  239. -NOLIC
  240.                 This flag disables the license agreement
  241.                 dialogue box during installation. This parameter 
  242.                 works in Interactive Mode only.
  243.  
  244. -NOREAD
  245.                 This flag disables the readme display during
  246.                 installation. This parameter works in Interactive
  247.                 Mode only.
  248.  
  249. -NOWEL
  250.                 This flag disables the welcome screen during
  251.                 installation. This parameter works in the
  252.                 Interactive Mode only.
  253.  
  254. -OVER ALL    
  255.         This flag will update ALL INF drivers even if
  256.         third party drivers are currently installed. This
  257.         parameter works in Interactive Mode only.
  258.  
  259. -OVER FWH
  260.         This flag will update the Security drivers even
  261.         if a third party Security driver is currently
  262.         installed. This parameter works in Interactive
  263.         Mode only.
  264.  
  265. -OVER IDE    
  266.         This flag will update the Storage drivers even
  267.         if a third party Storage driver is currently
  268.         installed. This parameter works in Interactive
  269.         Mode only.
  270.  
  271. -OVER SMB    
  272.         This flag will update the LAN drivers even if
  273.         thrid party LAN drivers are currently installed.
  274.         This parameter works in Interactive Mode only.
  275.  
  276. -P <Installation Path>   
  277.                 Specifies the HDD location to which the INF 
  278.                 program files are copied.  If this flag is 
  279.                 not specified at the command line, the 
  280.                 <Installation Path> directory is by default 
  281.                 assumed to be:
  282.                 
  283.                    C:\Program Files\Intel\INFInst
  284.                 
  285.                 If this flag is used without the '-A' 
  286.                 option, only README.TXT will be copied to 
  287.                 <Installation Path>.  The directory name can 
  288.                 include spaces.  In this case, however, a 
  289.                 pair of double quotes (") must enclose the 
  290.                 directory name.  This parameter works in 
  291.                 either Silent Mode or Interactive Mode.
  292.  
  293. -S              Runs the Installer in Silent Mode.  No user 
  294.                 interface is displayed. This flag and the
  295.                 '-L' flag must be placed at the end of the 
  296.                 command line flag list.
  297.                 
  298. -SKIP<DevID>
  299.                 This flag will allow one or more devices to
  300.                 not be installed.
  301.  
  302.  
  303. Below are the language codes used with the '-L' flag:

  334. * 5.  CONTENTS OF THE EXTRACTED FILES
  335. ************************************************************
  336. INF files are copied to the hard disk drive after running 
  337. the Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility 
  338. executable with a '-A' flag (i.e., "INFINST_ENU.EXE -A -A" 
  339. or "SETUP.EXE -A").  The location of the INF files depends
  340. on whether a '-P' flag is specified along with the '-A' 
  341. flag:
  342.  
  343. 1.  If a '-P' flag is NOT specified, then the INF files are 
  344.     copied to the following directory:  
  345.        "C:\Program Files\Intel\INFINST"
  346. 2.  If a '-P' flag IS specified, then the INF files are 
  347.     copied to the location listed immediately after the 
  348.     '-P' flag.  
  349.  
  350.     See Section 4 for more information on flag usage.
  351.  
  352. After INF file extraction, the INF files and components are 
  353. copied to the <INF Extract Directory>.  These files and 
  354. components are categorized according to the Intel(R) 
  355. Chipset types. The following table summarizes the locations
  356. of the INF files, by chipsets:
  357.  
  358.    NOTE: The INF files are designed to update ONLY devices
  359.          not supported by the corresponding operating 
  360.          systems.
  361.  
  362.    NOTE: "<INF Extract Directory>" is abbreviated "<IED>"
  363.          in the remainder of this section.
  364.  
  365. For each subdirectory of <IED> (e.g., ICH, ICH2, etc), 
  366. the INF files are further classified according to 
  367. the operating systems they are designed for:
  368.  
  369.    Win98SE\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  370.                      Windows* 98SE ONLY.
  371.    Win2000\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  372.                      Windows* 2000 ONLY.
  373.    WinME\     --->  Contains INF files designed for
  374.                      Windows* Me ONLY.
  375.    WinXP\     --->  Contains INF files designed for
  376.                      Windows* XP ONLY.
  377.    Win2003\   --->  Contains INF files designed for
  378.                      Windows* Server 2003 ONLY.
  379.  
  380. NOTES:                             
  381. 1.  INFPrelo.INF makes a CUSTOM.INF template that installs 
  382.     the INF files for Intel(R) chipsets during OS setup.  
  383.     OEMs can incorporate this file into the SETUP directory 
  384.     for the OEM Preload Kit.
  385.     (Refer to Section 8 for more details.)

  387.  
  388. ************************************************************
  389. * 6.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN INTERACTIVE MODE
  390. ************************************************************
  391. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  392.     described in section 2.
  393.  
  394. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  395.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: INFINST_xxx.EXE
  396.        Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE
  397.  
  398. 3.  You will be prompted to agree to the license agreement.  
  399.     If you do not agree, the Installer will exit before 
  400.     extracting any files.
  401.     
  402. 4.  Follow the on-screen instructions and use the default
  403.     settings to complete the setup, once the operating
  404.     system has rebooted.
  405.  
  406. 5.  This completes the installation of the Intel(R) Chipset 
  407.     Software Installation Utility.  
  408.  
  409.  
  410. ************************************************************
  411. * 7.  INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE IN SILENT MODE
  412. ************************************************************
  413. 1.  Verify that all system requirements have been met as 
  414.     described in section 2.
  415.  
  416. 2.  Run the InstallShield* installation program:
  417.     For silent install with auto-reboot:
  418.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  419.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -b -s
  420.        Compressed .ZIP distribution:
  421.        SETUP.EXE -b -s
  422.     - OR -
  423.     For silent install without auto-reboot:
  424.        Self-extracting .EXE distribution: 
  425.        INFINST_xxx.EXE -a -s
  426.        Compressed .ZIP distribution: SETUP.EXE -s
  427.  
  428. 3.  The utility will perform the necessary updates and 
  429.     record the installation status in the following system 
  430.     registry key:
  431.         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\INFInst
  432.  
  433. 4.  If the utility was invoked with the "-b" flag, the 
  434.     system will automatically reboot if the update was
  435.     successful.
  436.  
  437.     NOTE:  The system MUST be rebooted for all device 
  438.     updates to take effect.
  439.  
  440. 5.  To determine whether the install was successful, verify 
  441.     the "install" value in the registry key specified in 
  442.     Step 3.
  443.  
  444. 6.  In Silent Mode the utility will not display the license
  445.     agreement. When using Silent Mode the license agreement,
  446.     license.txt, will be placed in the following folder:
  447.         Program Files/Intel/INFInst folder.
  448.     Please read this agreement.
  449.

  476. * 8.  INSTALLING THE INF FILES PRIOR TO OS INSTALLATION
  477. ************************************************************
  478. 1.  Copy the OS installation files from the setup 
  479.     directory to a directory on the hard disk. This 
  480.     procedure requires a minimum of 5MB of hard disk space.
  481.     It is important to make sure there is enough disk space 
  482.     before beginning the copy process. This can be done by
  483.     opening 'My Computer' and then right clicking on the
  484.     correct drive and selecting 'Properties'. The
  485.     directories shall be referred to as follows:
  486.  
  487.       Windows* XP   :  <WINXP Setup Directory>
  488.       Windows* 2000 :  <WIN2000 Setup Directory>
  489.       Windows* 98SE :  <WIN98SE Setup Directory>
  490.       Windows* Me   :  <WINMe Setup Directory>
  491.       Windows* 2003 :  <WIN2003 Setup Directory>
  492.         
  493.

  495. * 8A.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* XP INF FILES PRIOR TO
  496. *      OS INSTALLATION

  498. NOTE: The Windows* XP OEM Preload Kit distribution CD
  499.       contains a setup directory with all the base OS setup
  500.       files and installation programs (WINNT.EXE and
  501.       WINNT32.EXE).

  503. The name of the directory may vary depending on the 
  504. distribution CD (e.g., \I386\).

  507. 1.  Create the following directory structure under the 
  508.     <WINXP Setup Directory>:

  512. 2.  Copy the Windows* XP INF files from 
  513.     <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\WinXP to the directory
  514.     created in Step 1 above:

  526. 4.  Copy the Windows* XP INF files AND the catalog files 
  527.     (.CAT) from <INF Extract Directory>\XXXX\WinXP to the 
  528.     directory created in Step 4 above:

  532.     Note: XXXX is the directory name for the chipset of 
  533.           interest.  See Section 8 for more details.

  535. 5.  Either modify the default Windows* XP installation
  536.     answer file, UNATTEND.TXT, located in <WINXP Setup 
  537.     Directory>, or create a customized answer file.  The
  538.     answer file must include the following information:
  539.    
  540.        [Unattended]
  541.        OemPreinstall = Yes
  542.        OemPnPDriversPath="drivers\IntelINF"
  543.  
  544.     A sample answer file for preloading the Intel(R) Chipset
  545.     Software Installation utility files is available:

  557. 6.  Run "WINNT.EXE /u:<answer file name> /s:<WINXP Setup 
  558.     Directory>" to install Windows* XP.

  561. * 8B.  INSTALLING THE WINDOWS* 2000 INF FILES PRIOR TO
  562. *      OS INSTALLATION

  601. 5.  Either modify the default Windows* 2000 installation
  602.     answer file, UNATTEND.TXT, located in <WIN2000 Setup 
  603.     Directory>, or create a customized answer file.  The
  604.     answer file must include the following information:
