1... PREFACE
The purpose of the kit is to use the capabilities of the PC as a
teaching media in the social science classroom. As American society
becomes more visually oriented, computer images have a great deal of
influence in the instruction process.
The audience for this product is a literate high school population.
[The option remains of replacing text files in toto with translated
versions for bilingual students. These bilingual files are NOT in the
scope of this kit].
The students using JUBILEE are actively involved in selecting the
presentation order; scrolling; and answering a few questions. The program
is subdivided and organized so that it will not exceed available periods
of class worktime.
The topics covered included facts and dates that are part of American
heritage. Students can become accountable for the material by using the
study questions supplied in the Teachers' Manual (included at time of
software registration).
The teacher has the option of being a key component in the optimum
use of the product. He may use the supplemental facts , questions, and
vocabulary list supplied in the Manual. The teacher may elect to customize
lessons by altering the material in the text files (Those with the
extension,".DAT" as explained in section 5 below). The teacher may also
collect student reponses collected during the computer sessions and
report these results back to the classroom.
Training via software permits just-in-time instructional capability and is
self-paced. The kit can 'stand alone' without a lot of teacher directives
for its use.
2... HARDWARE/SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
-- IBM or clone with VGA high resolution 640 x 640 monitor.
This product was designed for the 286 12mhz AT.
-- Operating system: MS-DOS 3.3 or higher.
-- A mouse is optional.
-- A hard disk is recommended.

4... INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
INSTALLATION:
This procedure is to be done by the PC systems administrator
or the user if there is no administrator.
Please use the mkdir command to set up a directory by typing
the following command at the DOS prompt:
MKDIR C:\SPAIN
Then insert the aware diskette into drive A:, and use the following
command to copy all of the necessary files to your hard disk:
COPY A:\*.* C:\SPAIN\*.*
(Note: About 650,000 bytes are needed for the program).
You are now ready to run. There is no requirement for decompression
of files or other additional steps. If your hard drive is not
designated as C:, you should substitute the appropriate letter in
place of the "C" in the previous commands.
Be sure to store the original diskette in a safe
place as an archival backup.
OPERATION:
Invocation:
The user must set his directory to the SPAIN subdirectory by typing
this command from the DOS prompt:
CD C:\SPAIN
The program may then be invoked by typing 'JUBILEE' followed by a
carriage return:
JUBILEE <CR>
Allow the initial screens to 'play'.
You may use PageUp PageDown for viewing the text windows or UpArrow and
DownArrow for slower paced viewing.
Selection Options:
The program is menu driven. Some of the
displays are controlled by a timer, in which case it is useless to
hit return until the animation sequences complete.
Collecting Student Responses:
The file, vote.col, collects voting statistics for the classroom into
choices a) b) c). You may TYPE vote.col to see how the class views the
Columbus celebration. Or you may delete the file if you wish to restart
the collection. This collection process should be restricted to the
instructor!
MS-DOS PROMPT: c:\SPAIN TYPE VOTE.COL
13 12 4 means that in 29 executions of the
program 13 people favored celebration, 12 did not
wish to celebrate, and 4 were uncommited.
The file, say.col, collects student impressions of what they would say
if they were the first to land upon Mars. You may TYPE say.col or you
may delete the file if you wish to restart the collection.
Additionally, a teachers guide, 'TEACHER.DOC' is available
for registered users.
Termination Method:
To terminate Program execution hit <ESC> while in the MENU screen.
A list of files or an inventory of the files which must be in the
SPAIN subdirectory is included here. Absence or alteration of these files
may cause the program to abort or malfunction.
INSTALLATION FILE INVENTORY:
FILE INVENTORY: [absence of any file will cause program to malfunction]
EGAVGA BGI Turbo C graphics driver
Jubilee EXE Executable
OCEAN2 PCX
SHIP1 PCX
JUB GXL
The .DAT files explained below in Section 5 are also
required. All files which are NOT .DAT files must be left intact and
unaltered!
5... TAILORING OF LESSONS FOR UNIQUE CLASSROOMS
The text files may be modified to suit the needs of the
particular group of students. The files provided here are a database for
historical material. The teacher may remove or add information as he sees
fit with the remaining screens and the menus serving as a shell.
It is suggested that the original .DAT files be left alone intact
and as delivered on the supplied media. The .DAT files copied and
stored on the hard disk (and subsequently on the media that you use
for distribution within your company) are the ones to modify.
There is a SIZE LIMITATION of 6 windowed screens(about 120 lines)
due to memory requirements. This means that if you have a .DAT file
exceeding the size limit, the remaining excess will not appear in
the scrolled window when the program runs.
The mechanics of modification are to use a text editor such as
EDIT and use ASCII characters (Alphabetic, numeric and punctuation-
characters only). Special formating characters such as TABs are not
to be used (Do not Use Word Perfect). You may enter up to 61
characters per line. These will be visible in the text windows.
Shown at the end of this section is a list of the files and
their titles that will appear in the scrolled windows along with
the window title. These are the only files available for modifica-
tion.
Example of Modification : insertion of additional text into the
file EXPED.DAT so that the teacher
may add information found about
life on the ships. The teacher issues
the command to edit the hard disk version:
c:\SPAIN EDIT EXPED.DAT.The teacher
adds the material about bathing and saves
the file on the disk.
... [preceding text]...
Columbus was concerned that the crew would be
disturbed at being so far from home, so he kept two logs.
He made an "accurate reckoning" of the distance for himself
and a "phony" one for the crew. But since he overestimated
distance on his own reckoning, the phony version was closer
to the truth. One objective was to keep his fleet together
He probably devised a system of signals by fire and smoke
for changing course and striking sail. The two caravels
(the Pinta and Nina) had to restrict their speed by re-
ducing sail because the flagship was a slower ship.
The Spanish seamen were very clean; at least twice <--- type in additions

6... REGISTRATION PROCEDURES/ASP STANDARDS
This program meets ASP support policy requirements.A Teacher's
guide to this kit may be obtained through registration. It includes
supplemental historical material; study questions for the student;
and a vocabulary list; plus suggested student project.
This program is distributed as SHAREWARE. You may try it on
your own system(VGA) before purchasing it by registering it with
the author. Anyone distributing Jubilee for any kind of remuneration must
first contact Niche for authorization. Authorization is automatically
grandted to ASP vendors. Commercial users of Jubilee
(schools) must register and pay for their copies within 7 days of first
use. The essence of shareware is to provide personal computer users with
quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
programmers to continue to produce new products. You try before you
buy!
If you plan to use the program please register 'JUBILEE' by
sending $10.00 for each PC usage with a maximum of $100.00 for a
site license (multiple users operating concurrently):
Niche Software
PO Box 2554
Seal Beach,California 90740-1554
The $10 fee will license one copy for use on any one computer at any one
time. You must treat this software just like a book. An example is that this
software may be used by any number of poeple and may be freely moved from
one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being use at another. Just as a
book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.
Direct inquiries to this above address by mail. This program is
produced by a member of the Association of Shareware Professionals
(ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works
for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem
with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be
able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you to resolve a dispute
or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical
support for members'products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at
545 Grover Road,Muskegon,MI, 49442 to send a CompuServe message via
CompuServe Mail to
ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
You are free to contact Niche for support in writing at the post
office box for a period of 90 days from registration.
