  1.      The Apollo Project was a race to the moon. The
  2. launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union in 1957 shook
  3. the United States. JFK was determined to not risk losing
  4. the race to the moon. What was happening at the time?
  5. The Chappaquidick incident occurred on the weekend of
  6. Apollo 11. The Nation was engaged on a War on Poverty.
  7. Richard Nixon was President. Ronald Reagan was governor
  8. of California. Aids had not been discovered. Moonies
  9. were not a significant presence.
  10.      The Apollo Project brought men into large-scale
  11. working relationships to solve extremely difficult
  12. scientific and technical problems. The complexity factor
  13. was such that there were an estimated 5,600 technical
  14. failures per mission even with the spacecraft functioning
  15. with 99.9 percent efficiency!
  16.      By the early 1970's, debate over the Vietnam War
  17. overshadowed the accomplishments of the Apollo project.
  18. The public wanted more justification for expenditures.
  19. The mission was perceived by some as returning with two
  20. boxes of rocks and a couple pockets of soil. Defeated in
  21. the race, the Soviets abandoned their own moon-landing
  22. program and turned toward developing a space station
  23. and long-duration human presence in orbit.
  24.      What the moon rocks revealed is that the moon (and
  25. probably the Earth) began 4.5 billion years ago with a
  26. surface layer a few hundred kilometers deep. By 4.4
  27. billion years ago, much of the magma ocean solidified.
  28. Today we know that virtually all the twenty or so
  29. planetary surfaces we have observed at close range have
  30. cratered landscapes like those of the moon.
  31.      Some astronauts retired. Twentyfour astronauts had
  32. gone to the moon during 9 Apollo missions. Some members
  33. of the scientific community argue that manned space
  34. exploration is a publicity stunt that should be abandoned
  35. in favor of exploring the solar system with robotic
  36. craft. Others are anxious to explore.Astronaut Lacy Veach
  37. says that "by 2008 we will have the technology to put
  38. a human on Mars. It will be 150 days out, 600 days on 
  39. the planet, and 120 days back. A lot like Magellan's
  40. trip around the Cape."
