  1. EXAMPLES
  2.  
  3. This document provides 3 examples that illustrate the usage of 
  4. Ambrose's Chronology of History and will help the user quickly 
  5. become familar with the program.  
  6.  
  7. EXAMPLE 1:
  8. Goal:   To become familiar with log files and the Chronologies Menu 
  9.     for viewing the General Chronology Lists.  
  10.  
  11. EXAMPLE 2.
  12. Goal:   To become familiar with modifying the program parameters. 
  13.  
  14. EXAMPLE 3.
  15. Goal:   To become familiar with the Rulers & Leaders Chronology 
  16.     and War Chronology features.

  21. EXAMPLE 1.
  22.  
  23. Goal:   To become familiar with log files and the Chronologies Menu for 
  24.     viewing General Chronology Lists.  
  25.

  27. 1.      To start the program, make sure you are in the [HISTORY] 
  28.     directory  by typing 
  29.             cd   \HISTORY 
  30.  
  31.     and pressing the [ENTER] key.  To start the program, type       
  32.  
  33.             history [ENTER]
  34.  
  35.     The program begins by displaying a title screen and 
  36.     loading necessary information.  Press any key to continue 
  37.     once the prompt [Enter to Continue] appears.
  38.  
  39. 2.      Open a log file for saving any desired information.  If using 
  40.     a mouse, move the mouse over to the File Menu (at the top of the 
  41.     screen) and press the left mouse button.  If a mouse is not 
  42.     available, enter the letter 'F' to acces the File menu.
  43.  
  44. 3.      Access the Open Log Files option by moving the mouse over to 
  45.     the Open Log Files line and pressing the left mouse button.
  46.  
  47. 4.      You will prompted to enter a filename up to 8 characters.  
  48.     Enter the following filename:
  49.  
  50.             example1 [ENTER]
  51.  
  52.     A suffix of .log will automatically be appended to the filename.  
  53.     The log file will appear as example1.log in the HISTORY 
  54.     subdirectory when the program is exited.
  55.  
  56. 5.      Select the Modify Parameters Menu by moving the mouse over to the 
  57.     Modify Parameters Menu area and press the left mouse button.  If a 
  58.     mouse is not available, enter the letter 'M' or use the arrow keys 
  59.     to highlight the Modify Parameters Menu and press the [ENTER] key.

  61. 6.      Select the [Time Periods...] option. 
  62.     
  63.     A sub-menu listing the 7 available time periods will be displayed.
  64.  
  65. 7.      Select the Era of Kings option.
  66.  
  67.     A message will appear indicating that the chronology information 
  68.     associated with the selected Time Period is being accessed.
  69.  
  70.     The Time Period Information window (lower right corner) will 
  71.     have the Era of Kings line highlighted and the Time and Year 
  72.     Status window (top left corner) will reflect the new time period 
  73.     and effective year range.
  74.  
  75. 8.      Select the Chronologies Menu. 
  76.  
  77. 9.      Since the General Chronology List option will already be highlighted, 
  78.     press the [ENTER] key.  The General Chronology List can also be 
  79.     accessed quickly from the main program screen by pressing the F2 Key.
  80.  
  81.     A chronology listing showing history entries starting from 
  82.     the year 1600 will be displayed.

  84. 10.     Since a log file has already been opened, information from this 
  85.     display can be saved to that file.  Type in 'L' to save this 
  86.     information to the file.  If a log file had not been opened earlier, 
  87.     an error message would have appeared.
  88.  
  89. 11.     Press the [End] key.
  90.     The last page of the chronology listing will be displayed.
  91.  
  92. 12.     Now press the [Home] key.
  93.     The first page of the chronology listing will be displayed.
  94.  
  95. 13.     Start paging down through the chronology listings using the [PgDn] 
  96.     key or moving the mouse over to the PgDn box and pressing the left 
  97.     mouse button.  It will soon become apparent that several [PgDn] key 
  98.     strokes will be necessary to reach the page containing entries in 
  99.     the 1700s year range.
  100.  
  101. 14.     To reach the information in the 1700s quickly, select the 
  102.     Options box by typing in 'O' or using the mouse.
  103.  
  104. 15.     Select the Go to Year... option by typing in the letter 'G' or by 
  105.     moving the mouse to the Go to Year... option line and pressing the 
  106.     left mouse button.
  107.  
  108.     A message box will appear prompting for a year to be entered.
  109.  
  110.     Type in the numbers:   1700 [ENTER]
  111.  
  112.     This will cause the program to position to the chronology 
  113.     information associated with the 1700s and highlight the first 
  114.     entry having a start year of 1700.
  115.  
  116. 16.     To view a reading list, select the Bibliography option from the 
  117.     Options box.  This can also be done by pressing the F3 Key.  A 
  118.     reading list will always be associated with the entry that is 
  119.     currently highlighted.  This information may also be saved to the 
  120.     log file by typing in 'L' or moving the mouse over to the Log box 
  121.     and pressing the left mouse button.

  123. 17.     To exit the bibliography display, press the [ESC] key or move the
  124.     mouse over to the ESC to Quit box and press the left mouse button.
  125.  
  126.     The chronology listing will be reappear.
  127.  
  128. 18.     To exit from the chronology listing display, use the [ESC] key or 
  129.     move the mouse to the [ESC] box and press the left mouse button.
  130.  
  131. 19.     To close the log file, access the File Menu.  Select the Close Log 
  132.     Files option. 
  133.      
  134. 20.     Quit the program by accessing the File Menu and selecting the 
  135.     Quit option.  This will exit the program and return to DOS.

  137.     Once at the DOS prompt, the log file (example1.log) containing 
  138.     the program information saved may now be printed out using the 
  139.     following command:

  141.         print example1.log

  146. EXAMPLE 2.
  147.  
  148. Goal:   To become familiar with modifying the program parameters.  
  149.  
  150.  
  151. 1.      Perform the steps 1-4 of Example 1, using a log filename of 
  152.     "example2".
  153.  
  154. 2.      Select the Era of Kings Time Period by moving the mouse directly to 
  155.     the Era of Kings line in the Time Period Status window (bottom right
  156.     corner) and press the left mouse button.
  157.  
  158.     A message will appear indicating that the chronology information
  159.     associated with the selected Time Period is being accessed.
  160.  
  161. 3.      Select the Chronologies Menu. 
  162.  
  163. 4.      Since the General Chronology List option will already be 
  164.     highlighted, press the [ENTER] key. 
  165.  
  166. 5.      Hit the [ESC] to exit the chronology listing.
  167.  
  168.     Select the Modify Parameters Menu.
  169.     
  170.     Now, by modifying the category and country program parameters, the 
  171.     information provided in the chronology listing will be greatly 
  172.     reduced to show only a subset of the total chronology information
  173.     available.
  174.  
  175. 6.      Select the Country Selections option.
  176.     
  177. 7.      A 2-part Country Selection menu will be displayed.  Using the 
  178.     mouse or the [PgDn] key, page down through the country list until 
  179.     England is displayed.  Using an arrow key, highlight the England
  180.     country entry and press [ENTER].  This entry can also be selected
  181.     by moving the mouse to where the words are and pressing the left
  182.     mouse button twice.  Using this method, select the United States
  183.     country entry and the Ottoman Empire country entry.

  185. 8.      Now use the [ESC] key to exit the Country Selections menu. Although
  186.     up to 6 countries may be selected, this example will use only 3
  187.     countries.  The Country Status window (top right corner) will 
  188.     reflect the country selections.
  189.  
  190. 9.      Select the Category Status option from the Modify Parameters Menu.
  191.  
  192. 10.     The category statuses can now be modified.  Pressing the F3 Key
  193.     will set all the statuses off, while the F2 Key will set all 
  194.     categories and subcategories to an ON status.  The F1 Key may be 
  195.     pressed for additional information on modifying the status of a 
  196.     subcategory or category.  To view information associated only with 
  197.     Politics, Wars, and Treaties, the other categories will be set to OFF.  
  198.  
  199. 11.     Use to TAB key to sequence down the category list.  As each category
  200.     is reached, it will be highlighted, along with its subcategory 
  201.     statuses.  
  202.  
  203. 12.     Now the Year Range will be modified to produce a chronology 
  204.     listing between the years 1650 and 1750.  
  205.  
  206.     Move the mouse to the Time and Year Status window (top left 
  207.     corner) and press the left mouse button.
  208.  
  209. 13.     A Year Range menu will appear showing the currently defined 
  210.     year range and prompt for a new Start Year entry.  
  211.             Type in 1650 [ENTER].  
  212.  
  213.     Next, at the End Year prompt, type in 1750 [ENTER].  
  214.     
  215.     Press the [ENTER] key once again to exit the Year 
  216.     Modification Menu.  The Year Range menu will be exited and 
  217.     the effective year range will be updated in the Time and 
  218.     Year Range Status window (top left corner).

  220. 14.     Select the Chronologies Menu.
  221.  
  222. 15.     Highlight the General Chronology List option and press 
  223.     the [ENTER] key. 
  224.  
  225.     A chronology listing showing history entries starting 
  226.     from the year 1650 will be displayed, rather than from 1600.  
  227.     The type of information shown will consist of entries in the 
  228.     Politics, War, and Treaties categories occurring only in the 
  229.     3 selected countries.
  230.  
  231. 16.     Access the Options menu and select the View Parameters option to 
  232.     view the parameter settings.  The modified parameters will be
  233.     reflected in this display.  Hit the [ESC] key to exit this display.
  234.  
  235. 17.     To use the Search Item... feature, select the Options menu again.
  236.     The Search Item... option will already be highlighted.
  237.  
  238.     Press the [ENTER] key.
  239.  
  240. 18.     A string input menu will appear.        Enter the string 
  241.             "rebellion" [ENTER].
  242.  
  243.     At the prompt, type in 'Y' to proceed with the search.  
  244.     The first entry (from the current highlighted position) 
  245.     whose event description containing the string will be 
  246.     highlighted.
  247.  
  248. 19.     To find any subsequent matches, use the Next option by typing in 
  249.     'N' or using the mouse.  The next occurring match will be
  250.     highlighted.
  251.  
  252. 20.     To exit the General Chronology List, hit the [ESC] key.
  253.  
  254. 21.     Quit the program by accessing the File Menu and selecting 
  255.     the Quit option.  This will exit the program and return to DOS.

  257.     Once at the DOS prompt, the log file (example2.log) containing 
  258.     the program information saved may now be printed out using 
  259.     the following command:

  261.             print example2.log

  266. EXAMPLE 3.
  267.  
  268. Goal:   To become familiar with the Rulers & Leaders Chronology and 
  269.     War Chronology features.
  270.  
  271.  
  272. 1.      Perform the steps 1-4 of Example 1, using a log filename of "wars".
  273.  
  274. 2.      To view the War Chronology information, select the War Chronology
  275.     option from the Chronologies Menu.  A list of the major wars
  276.     starting with 
  277.  
  278.         Babylonian Wars                 539 B.C.
  279.  
  280.     will be displayed.  Save the information to the log file.
  281.  
  282. 3.      Using the [PgDn] key, access the next page of information. 
  283.     Using the Log option, save this information also.
  284.  
  285. 4.      To view additional information on a war, highlight the desired war
  286.     and press the [ENTER] key.  This may also be done by double-clicking
  287.     the mouse on the desired war.  Once this is done, the major battles
  288.     of the war will be displayed along with information about the battle
  289.     outcome.  
  290.  
  291. 5.      For a description of the war, press the [F4] Key.  A brief 
  292.     description of the war will be displayed.  Save this information to 
  293.     the log file. Press the [ESC] key to get back to the battle listing.
  294.  
  295. 6.      For a reading list, press the [F3] Key.  A reading list will 
  296.     be displayed. Press the [ESC] Key to return to the battle listing.  
  297.     Any of this information may be saved to the log file.
  298.  
  299. 7.      Use the ESC to Quit option to exit the war /battle display.  
  300.     The Major Wars listing will be re-displayed.  
  301.  
  302. 8.      To return to the main program screen, press the [ESC] key again or
  303.     move the mouse over to the ESC to Quit box and press the left mouse 
  304.     button.   
  305.  
  306. 9.      To view the Rulers Chronologies information, select the Rulers & 
  307.     Leaders Chronology option from the Chronologies Menu. 
  308.  
  309.     The user will be presented with a prompt to enter a year or 
  310.     year range. 
  311.  
  312.     If the [ESC] Key is pressed, a default year of 1500 is used.    
  313.  
  314.     Enter the year 1656 at the prompt.  Press [ENTER] at the End 
  315.     Year prompt. (For a year range, the End Year would have a 
  316.     specific value entered.)
  317.  
  318.     The information that will be displayed will be a list of the 
  319.     rulers and world leaders in power during the selected year of 
  320.     1656.
  321.  
  322. 10.     Using the [PgDn] key, access the next page of information. 
  323.     Using the Log option, save this information.  
  324.  
  325. 11.     Pressing the F1 Key will provide on-line help information.  
  326.     Pressing the F2 Key will allow the user to enter a new year or year 
  327.     range.  
  328.     
  329.  
  330. 12.     To return to the main program screen, press the [ESC] key again or 
  331.     move the mouse over to the ESC to Quit box and press the left mouse
  332.     button.   
  333.  
  334. 13.     To close the log file, use the Close Log Files option from the File
  335.     Menu.  
  336.  
  337. 14.     Quit the program by accessing the File Menu and selecting the Quit
  338.     option.  This will exit the program and return to DOS.
  339.  
  340.     Once at the DOS prompt, the log file (wars.log) containing 
  341.     the program information saved may now be printed out using 
  342.     the following command:
  343.                 print wars.log
