  1.                             THE BILL OF RIGHTS
  2.  
  3.         The Bill of Rights are the first 10 Amendments to the 
  4. constitution that were adopted shortly after the First Congress
  5. had started to meet as set forth in the constitution.  Several
  6. states may have refused to ratify the constitution had the promise
  7. of the Bill of Rights not been made.
  8.       
  9.       
  10.       1st Amendment
  11.       Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of 
  12.       religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging 
  13.       the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the 
  14.       people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for 
  15.       a redress of grievances.

  17.       2nd Amendment
  18.       A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a 
  19.       free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall 
  20.       not be infringed. 
  21.       
  22.       3rd Amendment
  23.       No soldier shall, in time of peace, be quartered in any house, 
  24.       without the consent of the owner; nor in time of war, but in a 
  25.       manner to be prescribed by law.

  27.       4th Amendment
  28.       The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, 
  29.       papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, 
  30.       shall not be violated; and no warrants shall issue, but upon 
  31.       probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and 
  32.       particularly describing the place to be searched and the persons 
  33.       or things to be seized.

  35.       5th Amendment
  36.       No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise 
  37.       infamous, crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand 
  38.       jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in 
  39.       the militia, when in actual service, in time of war, or public 
  40.       danger; nor shall any person be subject, for the same offence, to 
  41.       be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled, 
  42.       in any criminal case, to be a witness against himself; nor be 
  43.       deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of 
  44.       law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without 
  45.       just compensation.

  47.       6th Amendment
  48.       In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right 
  49.       to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state 
  50.       and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which 
  51.       district shall have been previously ascertained by law; and to be 
  52.       informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be 
  53.       confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory 
  54.       process for obtaining witnesses in his favor; and to have the 
  55.       assistance of counsel for his defence.

  57.       7th Amendment
  58.       In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall 
  59.       exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be 
  60.       preserved; and no fact, tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-
  61.       examined in any court of the United States than according to the 
  62.       rules of the common law.

  64.       8th Amendment
  65.       Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines 
  66.       imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted.

  68.       9th Amendment
  69.       The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not 
  70.       be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. 
  71.  
  72.       10th Amendment
  73.       The powers not delegated to the United States shall not be 
  74.       construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or 
  75.       prosecuted against one of the United States by citizens of 
  76.       another State or by citizens or subjects of any foreign state.
