I N T R O D U C T I O N The flags of the nations of the world are powerful symbols. They re-present in a concrete way the history, beliefs, and hopes of the poeplesof each country. A nation's flag expresses the unity of its citizens, aswell as the unique identity of that nation within the global community. Because of this, flags are useful tools for understanding and appre-ciating the various cultures which make up our world. As this preciousplanet of ours continues to shrink in size, due to ever-advancing communi-cations, such an understanding is vital for the future of all of humankindif we are to survive as a species of worth. It is therefore the hope of the programmer that this program willspark a renewed interest in, and love for, the peoples of every nation ofour world, so that the richness and diversity of every culture might en-lighten us and enliven us, and so promote peace throughout the earth. V I E W I N G F L A G S At the Main Menu: Type the number of one of the three boxes to make that box active. Type the letter of a region of the world in the left box to list the nations of that region in the upper box on the right. Type the letter of a nation on the right to view that nation's flag. Type the letter of an area in the lower right for a menu of special flags related to that area. or Press the left or right arrow keys to move from box to box. Press the up or down arrow keys to move the highlight within a box. Press the PgUp or PgDn keys to move from region to region. Press the Enter key to select the highlighted option. With a Mouse: Hold down the left button and drag to move the highlight. Click the left button on a desired flag or button to select it. Click the left button away from other choices to "press any key". Clicking the right button is always equivalent to pressing Escape. M E N U / F L A G K E Y S Use the following keys at a Special Menu: Letters/Numbers - View the designated flag or history Up/Down - Move the highlight Enter - View the highlighted flag or history PgUp/PgDn - Move to previous or next menu Escape - Return to Main Menu Use the following keys when viewing a flag: F1 - View information on this flag's nation F2 - Change flag colors (just for fun) Home - View the flag originally chosen Up/Down - View the previous or next flag (including special flags) PgUp/PgDn - View the flag of the previous or next nation Escape - Return to the Main Menu (You don't need to wait until the list of keys appears before using them.) S P E C I A L F E A T U R E S Flag Colors - Press the F2 key at any time to change flag colors. Flag Quiz - Press the F3 key at the Main Menu for a quiz on the flags. Parade - Press the F4 key at the Main Menu for a continuous parade of flags, then press Y (for Yes) if you wish to see only the National Flags, or N (for No) to view all flags. Each flag is shown for a short time, then the next is shown. To end the parade, press the Escape key at any time (or press any other key to go immediately to the next flag). Options - Press the F5 key at the Main Menu to set program options. Histories - Histories of flags are available at several Special Menus by typing a number. To view an entire history, read each screen of information, then follow the prompts at the bottom of each screen. Use the PgDn or PgUp keys to skip over part of a history or to see a part again. Press Escape to abort a history and return to the Special Menu. There is a Secret Menu somewhere of flags designed by the programmer. C H A N G I N G C O L O R S & P R I N T I N G A F L A G To change flag colors at the Changing Colors screen: Use the arrow keys to move from color to color. Type the letter of the desired new color after the box of the color you wish to change (example: To change red to purple, type `F' after `Red'). Press the F2 key after changing all colors to return to the program with the new colors, or press the Escape key to resume the true flag colors. If you have a CGA monitor, then many flags are displayed using the CGA graphics modes which use limited color sets. To change a color set, type the number of the desired new color set after the box of the set in the righthand column which you wish to change. To print a flag: Before running the Flags program, run the DOS Graphics command, by typing GRAPHICS at a DOS prompt. (Consult your DOS manual for options used with this command). Then run Flags. As you are viewing a flag you wish to print, hold down the Shift key and press the PrtSc key. (With some keyboards you do not need to hold down the Shift key.) F L A G Q U I Z Choose the desired category (region of the world), and the desiredlevel of difficulty (the number of choices displayed for each flag). Morepoints are given the higher the level or the more flags in the category. A number of choices of nations will be presented. Take a moment tolook them over, then press any key. As soon as you recognize the flagbeing formed, press a key again. The sooner this key is pressed, the morepoints given (or deducted if the guess is incorrect). After pressing a key, the choices are re-displayed. Type the numberof your guess. The computer will show the correct answer, and give ordeduct points accordingly. If you guess correctly, you will be offered a bonus for identifyingthe capital city of the nation. Type the number of the correct city. You may abort the quiz at any time by pressing the Escape key. P R O G R A M O P T I O N S To set options at the Program Options screen: Type G or T to select the Graphics or (slightly faster) Text interface. Type R or A to list flags by Region or Alphabetically. Type Y or N (Yes or No) to activate or deactivate the mouse. Enter a number from 0 to 30 to indicate how many seconds the program should pause at various points. Press the F2 key to save changes to the options, or press the Escape key to keep the options as they were previously set. Press the F3 key to reset the program to the default settings. On a CGA monitor, the program always uses the Text interface. If you choose the Alphabetical listing, then all the National Flagswill appear on the left side of the Main Menu, with the Special Menus onthe right. Use the Up and Down arrow keys or PgUp and PgDn to scroll thenation list. To find a nation quickly, type the first letter of its name.To scroll with a mouse, click the left button above or below the list. F L A G N O T E S The flags represented in this program are the National Flags of thenations of the world, the flags flown by ordinary citizens of the nations.These occasionally differ from the government or State Flags, which some-times include the State Arms added to the National Flags. Most flags have official proportions specified for the ratio of thelength of the flag to the width. Here most flags have been depicted withthe same basic proportions, unless a flag has unusual proportions (such asQatar), or if a flag's proportions are the only characteristic which dis-tinguishes it from another (such as Ecuador compared to Colombia). Nations and flags are constantly changing. Many sources were used tokeep the program as up-to-date as possible, but no guarantee can be madeas to the accuracy of any particular information.
