                Thank you for trying out WRITE CHINESE!

This program teaches basic Chinese calligraphy, focusing on 150 of the
most frequently encountered characters which constitute approximately
1/3 of all printed materials. Both traditional and simplified characters
are covered. The student practices calligraphy by drawing characters on
simulated "nine-square box" paper. The program evaluates each character
as it is being drawn, providing continuous feedback and positive
reinforcement.

This program also has quiz options to teach character meanings as well as
Mandarin (Pinyin, CNPA) and Cantonese (Yale) transliterations.

WRITE CHINESE is shareware, and of course, we would really appreciate
your monetary support. Registration brings with it many benefits,
including a larger Chinese database and bonus programs.  Whether or not
you do choose to register, we would still like to hear from you!  Your
comments about the program will be deeply appreciated.

                    NOTES ON RUNNING UNDER WINDOWS

WRITE CHINESE runs best as a stand-alone DOS application. If launched
from Windows, the opening music may sound unpleasantly erratic. This will
be true even if the program is provided "exclusive" use of system
resources.

To toggle off the opening music, the program may launched via the
CHINESE.PIF file provided as part of this program package.  The PIF file
provides CHINESE.EXE with 512K memory, full-screen operation, exclusive
use of system resources, and shuts off the opening music via a
command-line parameter. The CHINESE.ICO file displays the character
zhong-1, meaning "middle" as in the "Middle Kingdom" (China).

The CHINESE.PIF file assumes that the program is installed in the
C:\CHINESE subdirectory. If installed on some other drive or in a
different subdirectory, you should use the PIF Editor to modify the file
appropriately.

If you prefer launching WRITE CHINESE from a full-screen DOS prompt,
type "CHINESE N" to switch off the opening music.
