  62.      SECTION 1:  Getting Started & Hardware Requirements
  63.  
  64.     Hardware;
  65.     You must have a minimum of EGA to display program. 
  66.     Your system must also have a mouse with the latest driver.
  67.  
  68.     One Drive System; 
  69.     Start your computer as you normally would (with the DOS diskette)
  70.     then insert the Melissa's MF Diskette into drive "A", at the
  71.     DOS prompt type in "A:\FGSMMF.EXE". The program may run slowly 
  72.     from diskette but is acceptable.
  73.  
  74.     Hard Disk System;
  75.     Start your computer as you normally would. Make a directory
  76.     for MMF (consult your DOS manual for instructions on how to
  77.     make a directory and copy files). Copy all the files from your
  78.     MMF diskette into this directory. At the DOS prompt type in
  79.     "FGSMMF.EXE" to run the program.
  80.  
  81.      PRECAUTIONS:
  82.     To insure proper operation of the program it is best to place it
  83.     in it's own directory. This is only a precaution, progams that
  84.     are in there own directories do not bother or are not bothered by
  85.     any other program. This is not a must, just good practice. This 
  86.     program does not write any file to disk.
  87.     
  88.      SECTION 2:  Melissa's Music Flashcards in Windows
  89.  
  90.     To use MMF in Windows 3.0 and install the Icon, use the normal
  91.     procedure to start Windows. Select the window in which you want
  92.     to install the program (refer to your windows manual for 
  93.     installation of programs). Once you have installed the program in
  94.     Windows, single click on the program just to highlight it. Pull
  95.     down the "FILE" menu and select properties. Click on change icon.
  96.     In the "File Name Box", type in the Drive:\path\icon name.ico,
  97.     (ie: C:\MMF\FGSMMF.ICO). Click OK & OK. You should now have the
  98.     FMSMMF icon on the screen above the program. If you have a problem
  99.     with this procedure consult your windows manual.
  100.  
  101.     SECTION 3:  General Description
  102.  
  103.     In watching kids try to learn the notes and keys of the music staff
  104.     for piano lessons, the use of old-fashioned flashcards was boring
  105.     to the kids (and the adults). This program was written with those
  106.     flashcards in mind. An interactive computer environment would be
  107.     both entertaining and interesting. The use of this program probably
  108.     requires some knowledge of music, such as what a note is, what sharps
  109.     and flats do, the difference between treble and bass clefs, etc.
  110.     However, when this program is used in the context of learning a
  111.     musical instrument, the theory should pose no problem. Fundamentally,
  112.     this program allows one to choose the clef and the number of sharp or     
  113.     flats in the key signature after which key signatures and notes are
  114.     displayed at random on the staff. You can guess at the note or have
  115.     it displayed as a key on the keyboard.

  121.     Animating the notes adds interest to the process of learning the
  122.     names of the notes and keys.
  123.  
  124.      SECTION 4:  Initialization Screen
  125.  
  126.     The opening screen consists of a column of key boxes, a column
  127.     of clef boxes and a row of option boxes at the bottom of the 
  128.     screen. The KEY and CLEF boxes may be scrolled through with the
  129.     cursor keys or selected with the mouse.
  130.     The four KEY boxes are:
  131.              KEY OF C - To practice notes in the Key of C
  132.            SHARP KEYS - To practice notes in the sharp keys only 
  133.             FLAT KEYS - To practice notes in the flat keys only
  134.     FLAT & SHARP KEYS - To practice all possible key signatures
  135.     NOTE: Except in the case of the Key of C option, pressing a number    
  136.     key between 0 & 7 will set the upper limit on the number of sharps
  137.     and/or flats that will be displayed (the left & right cursor keys
  138.     will also increase & decrease this value). This feature is handy
  139.     when introducing the concept of keys to a student.
  140.     The Three CLEF boxes:
  141.     TREBLE CLEF - To practice notes in the treble (or G) clef
  142.       BASS CLEF - To practice notes in the bass (or F) clef
  143.      BOTH CLEFS - To select both treble & bass
  144.     The Bottom option boxes:
  145.     BEGIN - Starts flashcard generation (See section 5)
  146.      HELP - Displays a one page quick help
  147.      EXIT - Exit this program to DOS
  148.     
  149.     SECTION 5:  Flachcard Screen
  150.  
  151.     You can either supervise the student along with the progam or let
  152.     them practice at the students own pace.
  153.     The Flashcard screen displays a musical staff with clef sgin, a
  154.      note, and sharps or flats if selected in the initialization menu.
  155.      There is also a row of boxes across the top of the screen showing
  156.     note letters with sharp and flat symbols. Across the bottom of
  157.     the screen are the option boxes. To be shown the name of the 
  158.     displayed note, simply press the enter key or the right mouse button
  159.     with the cursor positioned to the right of the note. Pressing the
  160.     enter key or left mouse button will cause the new note to be
  161.     displayed. To guess the name of the note, move the mouse cursor to
  162.     the upper row of boxes and click the right mouse button when you
  163.     are positioned over the note name. A correct answer will result in
  164.     an animated happy face; whereas an incorrect answer results in an
  165.     animated sad face. If the note name is sharped or flatted due to 
  166.     the key signature, the sharp or flat symbol associated with the
  167.      note name should be selected. A display of the note on the keyboard
  168.     can be seen by clicking on the hint box at the bottom of the screen
  169.     or by pressing the "H" key. To really cheat, clicking in the center
  170.      of the note on the staff will highlight the correct note box at the
  171.      top of the screen. Selecting the EXIT box at the bottom of the
  172.     screen returns you to the initialization screen where perameters
  173.     may be changed or the program exited.

  180.     SECTION 6:  About Shareware
  181.     
  182.     Shareware is a try-before-you-buy process in which you are allowed to
  183.     use the program for a specific amount of time. This time will vary
  184.     from program to program. The grace period for this program is 3 weeks.
  185.      If after that time you find the program useful, you are expexted to 
  186.     register with the author (see registration form below). If however
  187.     after the specified time you do not find the program useful you are
  188.     required to remove it from use. Remember that the shareware system will
  189.     only work if you support it by registering your program with the 
  190.     author. This does a few thing like, encourage the authors of shareware
  191.     to continue to write quality programs, upgrade existing programs and
  192.     supply support for those programs.

  200.     Some older mouse driver may not work with this program.

  429.     This program teachs kid's of all ages about musical notes.
  430.     You can set the type of note that appears on the screen from flats
  431.     to sharps. The program will acknowledge if your right with a happy
  432.     face note or the note will cry if your wrong. This is a very
  433.     entertaining way to learn the musical notes. The program was
  434.     written to add some fun to the drudgery of trying to learn Music.
  435.     You can click on hint and the program will show you the proper note
  436.     on the piano keys. Very simple to use, just point and click.
