  41. FastTrak Utilities

  44. The FastCheck utility is used to monitor or perform maintenance
  45. on a FastTrak Mirrored (RAID 1) or Striped/Mirrored (RAID 0/1) 
  46. array. Visual and audible messages are available to warn of 
  47. possible problems with the disk array or controller. This utility
  48. runs under Windows 95-98, Windows NT 3.51, and Windows NT 4.0.

  51. Installation

  54. From the Start Button, choose the Run button. In the Run dialog
  55. box, type in "A:\UTIL\SETUP.EXE" and click "OK". Under Windows NT
  56. 3.51, from Program Manager go to the "File" menu and then choose
  57. "Run". In the Run dialog box, type in "A:\UTIL\SETUP.EXE" and click
  58. "OK". (NOTE: UltraTune will not run under Windows NT 3.5x).

  60. Follow the directions from the setup program.
  61. You may choose a complete install, which will install both utilities,
  62. or a custom install in which you can choose which of the utilities
  63. you wish to install. If you will be installing the FastCheck utility
  64. Promise recommends to load the utility during startup. This ensures
  65. you that it will be ready to post alerts on errors. During 
  66. installation, click "Yes" when prompted to run the utility on every 
  67. startup. The utility will appear minimized as a taskbar tray 
  68. icon and does not take desktop space. If no is answered it will 
  69. not run during startup. You may manually run the utility through 
  70. the Start button.

  88. Getting Around in the FastCheck Utility

  91. Task Bar Icon
  92. On the Windows 95-98/NT taskbar, the FastCheck icon appears as a stack
  93. of disks. To launch the utility double-click on the task bar icon.
  94. Windows NT 3.51 does not have a task bar; FastCheck will appear 
  95. as a minimized icon on the desktop.

  97. Array Tab View
  98. From the Array view, status is shown for drives in the array. On 
  99. the left window pane, drive models are shown. On the right pane, 
  100. array type, mapping, and size are displayed. This is followed by 
  101. array status. The status will be either working, error, or 
  102. degraded. If an error is found, the array needs to be synchronized.
  103. If degraded, a disk has failed or is not responding and most likely
  104. needs to be physically replaced followed by a data rebuild.

  106. Controller Tab View
  107. This view displays configuration and system resource data for the
  108. controller. The left pane shows the actual connector Channel and 
  109. Master/Slave ID of attached IDE drives. The right pane lists the 
  110. PCI Slot#, IRQ, and Bus Master address.

  112. Options Tab View
  113. The FastCheck Utility uses pop-up text for instruction on options. 
  114. Hover the mouse cursor for description.

  118. Configuration and Maintenance Options
  119. -------------------------------------

  121. To run a maintenance operation, simply right click the icon of the 
  122. array and choose either synchronization or rebuild array functions.
  123.  
  124. Synchronization
  125. This is a maintenance operation for Mirrored (RAID1) arrays. It 
  126. will compare data on drives for differences.  If there are 
  127. differences it will automatically copy data from the first disk to 
  128. the second disk in the array. This needs to be performed 
  129. periodically to maintain data integrity. To synchronize, choose the 
  130. Array Tab View, right click the array, and choose "Synchronize" 
  131. from the context menu. You can also "Schedule the array
  132. synchronization" under the Options Tab view.

  134. Schedule the array synchronization
  135. This option is configurable under the Options Tab View. An event 
  136. can be scheduled either monthly, weekly, daily, or once every 
  137. specified minutes. This way a synchronization can be performed on 
  138. an off-hour when the system is not in use.

  140. Log File
  141. In this Options Tab View, you may keep a record of alerts and 
  142. status reports of the FastTrak arrays. Click the "Use Log file" 
  143. check box to enable this feature followed by a logfile name. If 
  144. a filename is entered but the path is left blank, the default 
  145. directory will be the same as the FastCheck utility. Typically, 
  146. this directory would be "C:\Program Files\Promise\Fasttrak". 
  147. Because this file must be locked while the FastCheck utility is
  148. running, you must exit the utility in order for the log file to
  149. be read.

  151. Use NT System Event Log
  152. If this option is checked, events and errors will be written
  153. to the Windows NT Event Log. You can view these events by 
  154. clicking on the Start button then going to PROGRAMS - 
  155. ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS (COMMON) - EVENT VIEWER. From the Event
  156. Viewer menu bar choose "Log", and then check "Application".
  157. In the "Source" column, all FastCheck events will show up
  158. with the designation "FastCheck". Double-clicking on an event
  159. will display additional information.

  161. Rebuild
  162. This user command will effectively copy/overwrite data from an 
  163. existing data drive in the array onto a blank drive. The operation 
  164. will be typically used when a failed drive has been replaced with 
  165. a new drive. To perform a Rebuild, choose the Array Tab View, right 
  166. click the array, and choose Rebuild from the context menu.

  168. When a spare drive is installed, a rebuild will automatically be 
  169. performed from the working drive.

  171. - PCI BUS UTILIZATION
  172. There are some cases where there may be some PCI bus 
  173. contention with other PCI devices. One known example of 
  174. this is "glitches" while playing .AVI files with some 
  175. brands of video capture cards. In such a case you can
  176. decrease how long the FastTrak occupies the PCI bus while
  177. transferring data by moving the PCI Bus Utilization slider 
  178. bar towards "Less". Click either "OK" or "Apply". The new
  179. setting will take effect immediately - it is not necessary 
  180. to reboot the system.

  185. The DMI NT Service allows the FastTrak to appear
  186. as a component. The DMI 2.0 Service Provider 
  187. Win32sl must be running as service for the FastTrak
  188. DMI service to be installed.
