  40. INSTALLING OR UPGRADING REVOLUTION IV DRIVERS

  42. Steps for installing the Revolution IV driver for Windows NT 4.0
  43.  
  44. 1.  After installing the Revolution(tm)IV board in the system,
  45.     start Windows NT in VGA mode by selecting the Windows NT
  46.     Workstation Version 4.00 (VGA mode) option from the NT Boot
  47.     Menu.
  48. 2.  When NT finishes loading, log in as a user who has permission
  49.     to change system settings (i.e. administrator).  You may
  50.     receive a warning message saying:  "Invalid Display Settings:
  51.     The currently selected display resolution is invalid".  Ignore
  52.     the instructions in this message and click or select "OK".
  53. 3.  Open the 'START' menu by using the taskbar.
  54. 4.  Highlight 'Settings' and open the Control Panel folder.
  55. 5.  Select or double click on the 'Display' icon.  The 'Display
  56.     Properties' window will pop up.
  57. 6.  Select the 'Settings' tab from the 'Display Properties' window.
  58. 7.  Select or click on the 'Display Type . . .' button.  The
  59.     'Display Type' window will pop up.
  60. 8.  Select or click on the 'Change' button.  The 'Change Display'
  61.     window will pop up.
  62. 9.  Select or click on the 'Have Disk' button.  The 'Install From
  63.     Disk' window will pop up.
  64. 10. If you are installing from the Revolution(tm) 4 CD-ROM, change
  65.     the installation disk setting to the \WINNT40\ subdirectory on
  66.     the CD-ROM (i.e. if your CD-ROM is drive D:, then you should
  67.     type D:\WINNT40\ ).  Select or click on the 'OK' button.
  68. 11. Select REV4.INF in the 'Locate File' window and click on
  69.     'Open' button.
  70. 12. Select 'OK" when the 'Install From Disk' window pops up. 
  71. 13. A window will pop up indicating the name of the display driver
  72.     found.  Select or click on the 'OK' button.  A window will
  73.     then pop up asking if you wish to proceed to install the new
  74.     drivers.  Select or click on the 'YES' button.
  75. 14. A pop up window will inform you that you have successfully
  76.     installed the drivers and that you must reboot in order for
  77.     the changes to take effect.  Select or click on the 'OK'
  78.     button.
  79. 15. Close the 'Display Type' window and then the 'Display
  80.     Properties' window.
  81. 16. A 'Systems Settings Change' window will pop up and ask you if
  82.     you wish to restart your computer using the newly installed
  83.     drivers.  Select or click on the 'YES' button to reboot your system.
  84. 17. The next time you boot, enter Windows NT 4.0 in normal mode - not
  85.     VGA Mode, and you will be using your new Revolution(tm) 4 card and
  86.     display driver.
  87. 18. After the system restarts, you will receive the following
  88.     message:  'Invalid Display Settings:  A new graphics driver
  89.     has been installed.  The default display resolution has been
  90.     temporarily used by the system.  Use the Display Option in the
  91.     Windows NT Control Panel to select your preferred display
  92.     resolution'.  Select or click 'OK'.
  93. 19. If the Display Settings Page is not visible, either open it by
  94.     selecting it through the taskbar or open it as detailed in
  95.     steps (3) through (6) above.
  96. 20. Select the desired resolution (desktop area), color depth
  97.     (palette), and refresh rate (frequency).  Choose 'LIST ALL
  98.     MODES' to see a list of valid display modes or refer to the
  99.     'Supported Resolutions' section of this document for a list of
  100.     driver supported modes.
  101.  
  102.     *NOTE*  BE SURE TO TEST THE SELECTED MODE BEFORE RESTARTING
  103.             WINDOWS NT.  IF YOUR MONITOR DOES NOT SUPPORT YOUR
  104.             CURRENT SELECTION, THE SYSTEM WILL RETURN WITH A BLANK
  105.             SCREEN AND MONITOR DAMAGE MAY RESULT.  THE TEST WILL
  106.             ONLY SET THE MODE FOR 5 SECONDS AND RETURN TO ALLOW
  107.             YOU TO SELECT ANOTHER IF THE FIRST IS NOT SUPPORTED.
  108.             IF THE TEST BITMAP DISPLAYS PROPERLY, THE MONITOR IS
  109.             CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING THE SELECTED RESOLUTION AND
  110.             VERTICAL REFRESH RATE.

  114. INSTALLING OR UPGRADING HAWKEYE IV UTILITY
  115. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  116. NOTE!! After the display driver is installed, and the system 
  117. restarts, HawkEye IV can be installed. HawkEye IV can be 
  118. installed by running SETUP from the WINNT40 directory  on the 
  119. Revolution IV CDROM, or the local/network directory that 
  120. contains the Revolution IV driver files.

  194. REVOLUTION IV SUPPORT FOR 3D 
  195. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  196. The NineICD implements the full functionality of OpenGL 1.1. 
  197. It also fully supports the Microsoft ICD (Installable Client Driver)
  198. API. Industry standard libraries such as GLUT and WGL are also
  199. supported. In fact, it is possible to write fully portable
  200. windowed OpenGL applications that can be compiled and run under
  201. multiple operating systems such as Windows and Unix, by using
  202. GLUT.
  203.  
  204. Hardware acceleration for all Revolution IV boards works with or
  205. without Display List Processor (DLP) support.
  206.  
  207. Hardware-accelerated OpenGL primitives include: 
  208.         Gouraud-shaded and flat-shaded triangles
  209.         Triangle strips and triangle fans
  210.         Texture mapped and mipmapped triangles triangle strips and
  211.         triangle fans
  212.         Gouraud-shaded and flat-shaded lines
  213.         Polylines
  214.         Points, single and multiple sized. 
  215.  
  216. In addition, hardware-accelerated Z-buffering, alpha-blending,
  217. alpha-testing and fogging on all supported primitives.  Mipmapped
  218. triangle acceleration includes linear and bilinear minification. 
  219.  
  220. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  221. PRESENT CAPABILITIES
  222. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  223.  
  224. The NineICD supports the OpenGL 1.1 standard as specified in
  225. "The OpenGL Graphics System: A Specification (Version 1.1)"
  226. by Mark Segal and Kurt Akeley, Chris Frazier Editor. This
  227. document can be downloaded from the SGI web site (www.sgi.com).
  228.  
  229. The NineICD provides hardware accelerated OpenGL graphics
  230. rendering that takes advantage of most hardware capabilities
  231. of the Number Nine T2R4 chips. DLP and non-DLP operation are 
  232. supported. Switching between these modes is achieved by changing
  233. an entry on the HawkEye Options page.
  234.  
  235. Note:   Mode switching(changing resolutions and colors depths)
  236.         while an OpenGL application is open is not supported and
  237.         will cause unpredictable results. 
  238.

  240. SUPPORTED CONFIGURATIONS
  241. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  242.  
  243. The NineICD will work in 8, 16 or 32 bits/pixel, subject to video
  244. memory size restrictions. OpenGL applications can either be run inside
  245. a window on the desktop or in full screen mode.
  246.  
  247. If the application is running in software rendering mode, there
  248. are no additional configuration requirements. If hardware
  249. acceleration is being used, however, maximum window size supported
  250. depends on available offscreen memory. The NineICD will
  251. automatically revert to software rendering if not enough offscreen
  252. memory is supported.
  253.

  255. SOFTWARE UPGRADES
  256. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  257. Even though you may have just received your Number Nine software,
  258. newer versions may be available. Free upgrades are provided to
  259. all Number Nine customers on the Number Nine World Wide Web home page
  260. and FTP site.
  261.  
  262. To see if you have the latest version, compare the version number
  263. of your software (on the label of the provided diskette or in
  264. Status in the HawkEye IV Control Panel under Disk Version) with
  265. the version number of the corresponding software on the World Wide Web
  266. home page or FTP site.

  270. USING THE NUMBER NINE BULLETIN BOARD SERVICE (BBS) - EUROPE ONLY

  284. Many files are self-extracting, but some files will require the
  285. latest version of PKUNZIP to decompress.  PKUNZIP is available
  286. in the General library (filename PKZ204G.EXE), and can also be
  287. found on most on-line services such as CompuServe and America
  288. Online.

  307. KNOWN RESTRICTIONS AND PROBLEMS
  308. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  309.  
  310. The following restrictions apply:
  311.  
  312. . Some VGA modes may appear as slpit horizontal images when using
  313.   the Silicon Graphics 1600SW Digital Flat Panel Monitor. This
  314.   issue can be resolved by installing Windows NT Service Pack 4.
  315.  
  316. . The DrvShareLists ICD entry point is not operational. Programs
  317.   that use this functionality will not work and may crash the
  318.   system.
  319.  
  320. . There are some problems with visual quality at the detail level.
  321.   Artifacts and seams may be present in some texture-mapped
  322.   objects and scenes. 
  323.  
  324. . It is not possible to dynamically switch resolutions or bit
  325.   depths while an OpenGL window is open. 
  326.  
  327. . The ICD only supports software rendering at 8 bits/pixel. 
  328.  
  329. . Applications or benchmarks that require the stencil buffer or
  330.   other OpenGL facilities not implemented in the T2R hardware
  331.   will run very slowly, and may show incorrect results. In
  332.   particular, programs HELLO2RTS and SHADOWFUN do not function
  333.   properly.
  334.  
  335. . Trilinear mipmap interpolation will not work when fogging or
  336.   alpha blending is also asked for. In these cases, the ICD falls
  337.   back to bilinear interpolation. 
  338.  
  339. . Textured lines will come out colorless.
  340.  
  341. . Programs that use destination alpha will not display correctly
  342.   when running in 16bpp. Operation will be correct in 32
  343.   bits/pixel mode.
  344.  
  345. . Accessing the NT Task Manager while running a Full Screen OpenGL
  346.   application may cause crash the system.
  347.  
  348. . Opening a Full Screen DOS session with the NT Task Manager running 
  349.   may cause a crash of the system.
  350.  
  351. . For optimal performance with 3D Studio MAX/SoftImage 3.8/ProEngineer 18-20
  352.   set your resolution and color depth to 1024x768x16Bpp or 1280x1024x16Bpp.

  355. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  356. REMOVING HAWKEYE FOR WINDOWS NT
  357. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  358. HawkEye IV includes an uninstall program that is available through
  359. the Windows NT Control Panel Add/Remove Programs utility.
  360.  
  361. Note:  You must be logged in as the user who installed HawkEye in
  362. the first place for the uninstall to function properly.
  363.  
  364. To remove HawkEye IV from your system:
  365. 1.  Click on the Windows NT 'Start' button
  366. 2.  Select 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'
  367. 3.  Double click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon
  368. 4.  Locate HawkEye NT on the list of software that can be removed
  369. 5.  Either Double click on HawkEye NT or click once on it and then
  370.     click Add/Remove
  371. 6.  The HawkEye NT Uninstall utility will then ask you to confirm
  372.     that you want to continue before it removes the files and
  373.     registry entries from your system.
  374.  
  375.  
  376. If you do not have the Uninstall Program:
  377. 1.  Right click on the Taskbar (to the right of the 'Start' button)
  378. 2.  Go to Properties
  379. 3.  Click on the 'Start Menu Programs' tab
  380. 4.  Click on 'Remove'
  381. 5.  From the list of applications, select HawkEye and click 'Remove'
  382. 6.  From the same list, open the 'Start Up' list by clicking on the '+' 
  383. 7.  Click once on the HawkEye icon and click 'Remove'
  384. 8.  Click 'Close'
  385. 9.  Click 'OK'
  386.  
  387.

  389. OTHER PROBLEMS
  390. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  391. Software sometimes does not perform consistently across all
  392. resolutions and color depths.  If you experience a persistent
  393. problem for which you can not determine a cause or resolution, try
  394. switching to a different resolution and/or color depth with
  395. Resolution Exchange.
  396.  
  397. If the problem is consistent across resolutions, please consult
  398. the application documentation.  Most applications are distributed
  399. with a "READ_ME" file that will contain important information
  400. regarding potential application problems.
