  48.         This CD contains the ELSA Display Driver for Microsoft Windows
  49.         95/98.
  50.  
  51.         The driver supports 256, 65536 and 16 Million colors in
  52.         all resolutions available on used ELSA board.

  77. 3.      Installation
  78.  
  79. 3.1     Installing ELSA graphics board for Windows 95/98
  80.  
  81.         Remove your "old" VGA and put the ELSA graphics board into your
  82.         computer. If your ELSA graphics adapter contains a VGA-switch, 
  83.         be sure that it's position is set to the "1" position (VGA 
  84.         enabled). 
  85.  
  86.         On startup Windows 95/98 detects the ELSA graphics board as
  87.         "PCI early VGA Device" or a "PCI standard VGA adapter" and 
  88.         prompts for a manufacturer disk. Advanced users can now install
  89.         as described in 3.3, Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install.
  90.         If you prefer an easy way to install the driver or the driver is 
  91.         downloaded as EXE from the web you should first confirm Windows 
  92.         request to install a "PCI Standard VGA adapter". Later you can 
  93.         start the EXE or install by WINNERware CD.
  94.  
  95. 3.1     Installation from WINNERware CD
  96.  
  97.         During a running Windows 95/98 session insert the WINNERware CD
  98.         into your CD-ROM. Normally after the CD is read, a setup is 
  99.         started and guides through installation. In case 'Auto Insert 
  100.         Notification' is disabled in your system, the setup has to be
  101.         started manually by double clicking its icon in the root of CD.
  102.         Now you can choose the components to be installed. After 
  103.         rebooting the system your monitor is recognized and installed. 
  104.         A resolution and color depth can be chosen now.
  105.  
  106. 3.2     Installing downloaded driver packages
  107.  
  108.         Driver packages from the web are self-extracting EXEs. The files
  109.         are temporary copied to e.g. c:\elsainst directory and an 
  110.         automatic driver setup is started. Tools are installed, too.
  111.         After finishing the setup or canceling the procedure the 
  112.         extracted installation files are deleted, including the 
  113.         temporary created folder.
  114.  
  115. 3.3     Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install
  116.  
  117.         After Windows recognized the ELSA graphics adapter choose
  118.         'Have Disk...'. If you are updating the driver manually, select
  119.         'change...' in the advanced settings of the diplay properties.
  120.         Now browse through the ELSA CD and select the proper display 
  121.         driver subdirectory (e.g. GLORIA\SYNERGY\WIN9X\STANDARD).Windows
  122.         will copy the driver files and prompt you to reboot the computer.
  123.         After restarting, Windows is running with the ELSA display 
  124.         drivers active. If your ELSA graphics adapter is not the primary 
  125.         display adapter in Windows 98, you have to activate the hardware
  126.         by clicking on the connected monitor bitmap in the global windows
  127.         display settings.

  129. 3.4     Installation extension
  130.  
  131.         The drivers installation routine will additionally create the 
  132.         ELSA Settings and ELSA 3D Settings property pages and install an
  133.         OpenGL ICD. 
  134.  
  135.         The drivers setup included in self-extracting driver packages
  136.         or the WINNERware CD will install additional tools like WINman
  137.         Suite and ELSAinfo. In case your graphics adapter is provided
  138.         with video I/O capabilities, the setup will install the software
  139.         components for these devices, too.
  140.  
  141.         In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
  142.         without rebooting your system.

  204. 5.      Release notes
  205.  
  206. 5.1     DirectDraw/Direct3D support
  207.  
  208.  
  209.         The display driver do support DirectDraw/Direct3D from 
  210.         DirectX 5/6, but to use it in an application, you must install 
  211.         DirectDraw/Direct3D. The Microsoft DirectDraw/Direct3D 
  212.         components are not included in the standard retail version 
  213.         of Windows 95. You need an installation of DirectX 5/6.
  214.  
  215.         To install DirectDraw/Direct3D use the CDSETUP from your
  216.         ERAZOR CD or start the DXSETUP.EXE in the folder:
  217.

  233. 5.2     AGP and Windows 95/98
  234.  
  235.  
  236.         AGP is supported only by the Windows version OSR-2.1 or higher. 
  237.         This is available after upgrading a Windows 95b (OSR2) version 
  238.         by the USB-Update 'USBSUPP.EXE'.
  239.         The version number of your installed Windows can be found in
  240.         the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
  241.         Windows\CurrentVersion\Version and VersionNumber.
  242.         The Entries for OSR-2.1 are:
  243.

  245.         Version       "Windows95"
  246.         VersionNumber "4.03.1212" or "4.03.1214"
  247.  
  248.         If your mainboard has no Intel chipset it may be necessary to
  249.         install a chipset specific software patch to get best support 
  250.         and performance using the AGP port. 
  251.         Normally this patch should be delivered on CD with your system
  252.         or mainboard. Otherwise you may get the newest patches on the 
  253.         internetsites of the chipset vendors.

  260.         If you have any questions about full AGP support on non Intel 
  261.         mainboards please consult your distributor.

  263. 5.3     Free defineable refreshrates (monitor timings)
  264.  
  265.         It is necessary to install and use the  specified INF - file 
  266.         delivered with your monitor. For information about to install 
  267.         please look above or use the windows documentation.  
  268.

  270.  
  271. 6.      Known Bugs and Operating Notes
  272.  
  273.  
  274.         This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
  275.         hints on work arounds.
  276.  
  277.         - for maximum performance the AntiAliasing checkbox in: Display 
  278.           Properties - Settings - Advanced - 3D Settings - More 3D,
  279.           should be set to "Disable"
  280.  
  281.         - If you install the ELSA Display Driver over an nVIDIA Display 
  282.           Driver, the key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
  283.           CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers\RIVATNT will not actualized. 
  284.           Replace "nv3ogl.dll" with "ELSAEIIO.DLL"  
  285.  
  286.         - Do not use "Custom Direct3D Settings" -names with more than 
  287.           twenty characters in the "3D-Settings" property tabs. Some 
  288.           failures may occure while using WINman Suite.
  289.  
  290.         - Task switching while 3D applications are active leads to 
  291.           corruption of textures in some cases
  292.  
  293.         - The DirectDraw resolution 480x360 works with too low frequency
  294.           for most monitors. Please take a look at 5.3.
  295.  
  296.         - OpenGL screen savers oftenly crash if an additional suspend 
  297.           is executed by the system or manually.
  298.  
  299.         - Switching VESA modes to windowed mode (normaly an error
  300.           pops up) leads to system crash
  301.  
  302.         - Windows suspend during active 3D applications may cause system
  303.           crash in Windows 95
  304.  
  305.         - For best display quality, in the 'More Direct3D' section of 3D
  306.           Settings Texel Alignment should be set to "upper left corner".
  307.  
  308.         - Mouse trails are not displayed, because the Riva chip 
  309.           accelerates this Windows functionality in hardware
  310.
