  24. What's in the distribution?
  25. =======================================================================
  26. This distribution contains Glide, Glide3, Direct3D drivers for Voodoo2
  27. Based 3D Accelerators and the Voodoo2 Control Panel Applet.
  28.  
  29. This distribution should be used by all OEM's shipping boards for
  30. the Windows 95/98 platform.  It is suggested that the files in this kit
  31. be placed on a driver CD in uncompressed (unzipped) format.

  71. - PC with a Pentium II, Pentium Pro, Pentium or similar processor
  72. - One free PCI slot (or two free PCI slots for SLI)
  73. - 16MB of RAM or more Suggested

  76. Installation
  77. ------------
  78. The installation below can vary depending on which version of Windows
  79. is installed.  To determine the Windows 95 version click Start, 
  80. Settings, Control Panel. Double-click on the system icon. If the 
  81. Windows version is 4.00.950b, Windows 95 OEM SR2 is running.

  84. Existing Drivers Installed or PCI Multimedia Device shown in Device Mgr
  85. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  86. 1) Start Windows and extract the drivers to a temporary directory.
  87.  
  88. 2) Open Device Manager (Start, Settings, Control Panel, System)
  89.  
  90. 3) Locate the existing reference to the card it will be listed as:
  91.  
  92.        Reference Card: Other Devices / PCI Multimedia Device or
  93.                Sound, Video, Game Controllers / Voodoo2
  94.  
  95.    NOTE: In an SLI configiration (2 Voodoo2 cards) you only need to
  96.    select one card to update.

  98. 4) Double Click on the card, then click the driver Tab
  99.  
  100.      Windows 95 Standard Release users: Click "Change Driver" and choose
  101.                                         "Have Disk"
  102.               Windows 95 OEM SR2 users: Click "Update Driver" then click
  103.                                         the Next Button.  Click "Other
  104.                                         Locations" 
  105.                       Windows 98 users: Click "Update Driver" then click
  106.                                         the Next Button twice on the
  107.                                         Detection Dialog Box. Ensure that
  108.                                         "Specify a Location" is checked and
  109.                                         "Microsoft Windows Update" is not
  110.                                         checked. Click Browse to continue.

  112. 5) Point the driver location to where the files are extracted to and click
  113.    OK.  
  114.  
  115.      Windows Standard Release 95 users: Select "Voodoo2 3D Accelerator" 
  116.                                         from the List and click OK.
  117.                                         Click OK again to save changes in
  118.                                         Device Manager.
  119.               Windows 95 OEM SR2 Users: Click on Finish to continue.
  120.                       Windows 98 users: Click on Next to continue.

  122. 6) You MAY then be prompted to insert the "Voodoo2 Drivers for Windows 9X"
  123.    Disk.  Again, point to the path you extracted the files to and press OK.
  124.  
  125. 7) Windows will copy the drivers. Reboot the system when prompted
  126.  
  127. 8) Install DirectX 6.0 or higher.  (If not already installed)

  131. No Current Drivers Installed (Single Board and SLI)
  132. ---------------------------------------------------

  134. Single Board
  135. ============

  137. 1) Start Windows and extract the drivers to a temporary directory.
  138.  
  139. 2) Shutdown Windows, Power off the system and install your Voodoo2
  140.    3D board into a PCI slot. 
  141.  
  142. 3) Restart Windows after hardware installation.
  143.  
  144. 4) Windows will detect a "PCI Multimedia Device", you need to:
  145.  
  146.      Windows 95 Standard Release users: Select "Use Driver from Mfr"
  147.                                         and click OK
  148.               Windows 95 OEM SR2 users: Click the Next Button on the
  149.                                         Detection Dialog Box. Then click
  150.                                         "Other Locations"
  151.                       Windows 98 users: Click the Next Button twice on the
  152.                                         Detection Dialog Box. Ensure that
  153.                                         "Specify a Location" is checked and
  154.                                         "Microsoft Windows Update" is not
  155.                                         checked. Click Browse to continue.

  157. 5) Point the driver location to where the files are extracted to and click
  158.    OK.  (Windows 98: You will need to click on Next to continue)

  160. 6) You MAY then be prompted to insert the "Voodoo2 Drivers for Windows 9X"
  161.    Disk.  Enter the path the drivers are extracted to and press OK.

  163. 7) Windows will copy the drivers. Reboot the system when prompted
  164.  
  165. 8) Install DirectX 6.0 or higher.  (If not already installed)

  168. SLI (Two Voodoo2 Boards with SLI cable)
  169. =======================================
  170.  
  171. 1) Start Windows and extract the drivers to a temporary directory.
  172.  
  173. 2) Shutdown Windows, Power off the system and install your Voodoo2
  174.    3D boards into PCI slots next to each other
  175.  
  176. 3) Connect the SLI cable to both boards.
  177.  
  178. 4) Restart the system and Windows after hardware installation.
  179.  
  180. 5) Windows will detect a "PCI Multimedia Device", you need to:
  181.  
  182.      Windows 95 Standard Release users: Select "Use Driver from Mfr"
  183.                                         and click OK
  184.               Windows 95 OEM SR2 users: Click the Next Button on the
  185.                                         Detection Dialog Box. Then click
  186.                                         "Other Locations"
  187.                       Windows 98 users: Click the Next Button twice on the
  188.                                         Detection Dialog Box. Ensure that
  189.                                         "Specify a Location" is checked and
  190.                                         "Microsoft Windows Update" is not
  191.                                         checked. Click Browse to continue.

  193. 6) Point the driver location to where the files are extracted to and click
  194.    OK.  (Windows 98: You will need to click on Next to continue)
  195.  
  196. 7) You MAY then be prompted to insert the "Voodoo2 Drivers for Windows 9X"
  197.    Disk.  Enter the path the drivers are extracted to and press OK.

  199. 8) Windows will copy the drivers. When prompted to reboot the system, 
  200.    click No. You may be asked to reboot several more times. Manually 
  201.    restart the system by clicking Start, Shutdown and Restart.

  203. 9) Install DirectX 6.0 or higher.  (If not already installed)

  207. Troubleshooting
  208. ---------------
  209. Problem: After installing this driver, the Control panel applet I had
  210. for a Voodoo Graphics card is gone.
  211.  
  212. Resolution: The Voodoo2 drivers will uninstall *ANY* Voodoo Graphics 
  213. drivers.  This is to ensure only Voodoo2 drivers are on the system.
  214.  
  215.  
  216. Problem: After upgrading Voodoo Graphics to Voodoo2, old Glide games 
  217. that worked before are not working now.
  218.  
  219. Resolution: Make Voodoo2 backwards compatable with Voodoo Graphics by 
  220. adding environment variables with V2-auto.inf.  Using Windows Explore 
  221. and find V2-auto.inf in directory were zip file was extracted.  Right 
  222. click V2-auto.inf and select Install from pop-up menu.  Reboot system.
  223. This will update the Autoexec.bat file with environment variables. 
  224. Uninstall will not remove the lines from Autoexec.bat
  225.  
  226. Known Issues with Windows DX6
  227. -----------------------------
  228. Problem: The runtime function ValidateTextureStageState is not flushing 
  229. texture handles to the driver, prior to calling the validate function.  
  230. This is causing the driver to pass all multi-texture configurations.  
  231. This problem is only going to affect DX6 specific apps that are making 
  232. use of the multi-texturing.
  233.  
  234. Problem: We have a discovered a problem with enabling and disabling 
  235. specular during rendering of multi-primitives that also have fog enabled.  
  236. Basically the driver is being sent a flexible vertex format that doesn't 
  237. contain any fog information and so the primitives are being renderered 
  238. incorrectly.  
  239.  
  240. Problem:  Some games are exhibiting flashing primitives during rendering 
  241. of frames.  This shows up most noticeably on 'Take No Prisoners' as well 
  242. as 'Armour Command'. The problem is fundamental to the rendering 
  243. functions it could possibly affect a lot more games. The same problems 
  244. are appearing on the other manufacturer cards as well.
  245.  
  246. In General: Microsoft is aware of issues with the current version of DX6.
  247. Until Microsoft releases a stabilized version of the DX6 driver all 
  248. graphics cards will exhibit these problems to certain degrees.
