  5. This file contains a variety of information you should read before 
  6. installing Ali AGP drivers. This setup program contains two drivers, 
  7. AgartD.VXD and ALiPCIMP.PCI. AgartD.VXD is the graphics address 
  8. remapping table(GART) management for Ali M1541/M1621 chipsets at 
  9. Windows 95. ALiPCIMP.PCI is the PCI miniport driver provides seven 
  10. services to PCI for Ali M1541 and M1621 at Windows 98.

  66. Windows 95:
  67.   1. Install Windows 95 OSR2 or later version.
  68.   2. Upgrade Windows 95 to version OSR2.1 by running USBSUPP.EXE.
  69.      We can get this file from Microsoft (www.microsoft.com).
  70.   3. Install Microsoft DirectX 5.0 or later version.
  71.      We can get this driver from Microsoft too.
  72.   4. Install Ali M1541 AGP Driver
  73.    - run this setup program named "setup.exe".
  74.    - this program will detect the Windows version automatically
  75.      and modify the registry to load the proper driver.
  76.   5. Install VGA driver for Windows 95.

  78. Windows 98:
  79.   1. Install Windows 98. 
  80.   2. Install Ali M1541/M1621 AGP Driver
  81.    - run this setup program named "setup.exe".
  82.    - this program will detect the Windows version automatically
  83.      and modify the registry to load the proper driver.

  89. Windows 95 and Windows 98:
  90.   1. Open "Control Panel" folder
  91.   2. Invoke "Add\Remove Programs" icon
  92.   3. Choose "uninstall Ali M1541/M1621 drivers" item 
  93.   4. Click on "Add/Remove" button to remove drivers.

  96. 5. Manual Installation

  98.   After installation, the following drivers are stored as listed.
  99.       <Windows 95 directory>\System\AgartD.VXD
  100.       <Windows 95 directory>\System\ALiPCIMP.PCI

  102.   We can backup those files and install drivers manually in the future.

  104. Windows 95:
  105.   1. Copy AgartD.VXD to "<Windows 95 directory>\System\" directory.
  106.   2. Add a key "AGARTD" in the registry:
  107.      KEY:"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\AGARTD" 
  108.      with:

  112. Windows 98 (M1541 chipset):
  113.   1. Copy ALiPCIMP.PCI to "<Windows 95 directory>\System\" directory.
  114.   2. Add a key "154110b9" in the registry:
  115.      KEY:"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\PCI\GARTMINIPORT\154110B9"

  135. 6. Verifying Installation of the Driver
  136. -----------------------------------------
  137.   To make sure if the ALI M1541/M1621 AGP driver is properly installed,
  138.   We need run "Regedit" and check whether the key AGARTD exists in 
  139.   the following path
  140.       "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD"
  141.   for Windows 95 or the NAME/DATA pair 'Path  "ALiPCIMP.PCI" ' exists in
  142.   the following path
  143.       "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\PCI\GARTMINIPORT\154110B9"
  144.       "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\PCI\GARTMINIPORT\162110B9"
  145.   for Windows 98.

  148. 7. Verifying Validation of the AGP Functionality
  149. ------------------------------------------------
  150.   To check whether the AGP mechanism is able to activate, we can try the
  151.   anyone of the following:
  152.   1. A. Open the "Control Panel" folder
  153.      b. Invoke "Direct X" icon
  154.      c. Click on "Direct Draw" tab 
  155.      d. Check if the video memory is more than the VGA card's memory.
  156.         If it is, that means the AGP can be activated properly.
  157.      If the "Direct X" icon doesn't exist, please get DirectX 5.0 SDK from 
  158.      http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/directx/dxf/sdk5.0/default.htm (
  159.      idx5sdk.exe or idx5sdkm.exe). After unpacking, run setup.exe in the 
  160.      root directory to start the SDK setup. Select "DirectX runtime only" 
  161.      from the Setup Type selection dialog box.
  162.   
  163.   2. Run ddtest.exe in the previous DirectX 5.0 SDK unpacking_dir\sdk\bin 
  164.      directory. Click the "Connect" button. Check if the "Total Vmem" is
  165.      more than the VGA card's memory. 
  166.   
  167.   3. Get the debug or retail versions of the DirectX 5 runtime from previous
  168.      WWW site (idx5dbg.exe or idx5rdst.exe). Run dxtool.exe in the 
  169.      unpacking_dir\debug\directx or unpacking_dir\redist\directx. Check the 
  170.      value of "DirectDraw\Primary Display Driver\Total Video Memory".

  173. 8. Identifying the Drivers Version Number
  174. -----------------------------------------
  175.   The version of the drivers can be obtained by querying the driver file's
  176.   properties under File Manager.
  177.  
  178.   After installation, the following driver are stored as listed.
  179.     <Windows directory>\System\AgartD.VXD
  180.     <Windows directory>\System\ALiPCIMP.PCI
  181.   
  182.   1. Invoke the "Explorer" application.
  183.   2. Select the driver file.
  184.   3. Open the "File" menu.
  185.   4. Click on the "Properties" item.
  186.   5. Click on the "Version" tab.
  187.   6. The driver's version should be listed in the "File version" or "Product 
  188.      Version".
