EXPLORING THE NOVEL
A Hypertext Program
Using IBM's LINKWAY
═══════════════════
BACKGROUND AND WARNING:
______________________
EXPLORING THE NOVEL was developed at the U. S. Naval Academy for the
instruction of midshipmen. It uses the hypertext program LINKWAY which is
distributed by IBM. IBM allows applications to be distributed with a runtime
version of the program without cost.
If you use this program, you may do so without cost. You must understand,
however, that neither the Naval Academy nor I can be responsible for any
difficulties or damage it may cause. In our testing and early limited
distribution, it has caused no difficulties; but we have only tested the
program on the machines used by midshipmen at the Academy.
THE PROGRAM
___________
The program was developed to help plebe (freshman) students learn some of the
terms used in discussing and analyzing the novel. It uses two well-known
novels as examples: Nathaniel Hawthorne's THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES and
Mark Twain's ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN.
The program presents screens which help the user become acquainted with some
literary terms and relate them to familiar literature. The screens are linked
by hypertext buttons, and the user can choose the order in which the screens
are viewed. An EXIT button at the bottom of every screen will allow a fast
escape from the program.
The program requires a mouse which is evoked by the program mouse.bat,
mouse.com or mouse.exe. The hypertext buttons are activated by putting the
mouse pointer on a word containing the button or on a symbol such as an arrow
and clicking the left mouse button once. The program is intuitive for most
computer users and therefore contains no on screen instructions.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
____________________
The program requires
A mouse invoked by mouse.bat, mouse.com or mouse.exe
A hard disk with 2M of free space
An EGA/VGA card and screen
At least 512K of memory
INSTALLATION
____________
Unzip the package. Move the NOVEL.EXE file to the directory from which you
wish the program to operate. Type "novel" at the prompt and wait for the
program to unpack itself.
Once the unpacking is finished, type "go" to start the operation of the
program. Use the mouse to navigate through the screens.
LET ME HEAR FROM YOU
____________________
I will be happy to hear from you about the program once you have had an
opportunity to use it. I will be especially happy to hear from teachers who
are using the materials with their classes.
