  9. WinZip Self-Extractor is a utility program that creates native
  10. Windows self-extracting ZIP files.  These self-extracting ZIP
  11. files are ideal for electronic file distribution because they:
  12. (1) can contain multiple compressed files, ensuring that important
  13. files do not become separated from the rest of the package;
  14. (2) allow the receiver to use a familiar Windows interface to
  15. decompress files, without owning or knowing how to use a separate
  16. unzip utility; and (3) optionally run a "setup" or "installation"
  17. program, which may be included by the developer when the files are
  18. decompressed.

  21. winning utility to manipulate ZIP files.

  29. The ZIP file format is an industry standard for compressing and
  30. grouping files.  One ZIP file can contain multiple files.  Files
  31. contained in a ZIP are usually compressed.

  33. Typical uses for ZIP files include:

  35. - Most files available in "file areas" on bulletin boards and
  36.   electronic services like CompuServe and the Internet are
  37.   distributed as ZIP files.  Two benefits of using ZIP files for
  38.   electronic file distribution are that only one file transfer
  39.   operation ("download") is required to obtain all related files,
  40.   and file transfer time is minimized because the files in a ZIP
  41.   are compressed.

  43. - It is often useful to send a group of related files to an
  44.   associate.  Rather than distributing individual files it is
  45.   often easier to distribute the files as a ZIP file to benefit
  46.   from the file grouping and compression.

  48. ZIP files are created using a ZIP utility like WinZip(R) or the
  49. PKZIP(R) utility from PKWARE(R).

  51. *** What is a Self-Extracting ZIP File?

  53. A self-extracting ZIP file is an executable program file (.EXE
  54. file) that includes a ZIP file and software to extract or "unzip"
  55. the contents of the ZIP file.  Users can run (execute) a
  56. self-extracting ZIP file just as they run any other program.

  58. When a self-extracting ZIP file created by WinZip Self-Extractor
  59. is run, a dialog box is displayed.  This dialog box makes it easy
  60. for the user to change the "unzip to" folder and change other
  61. options before extracting or "unzipping" the files in the
  62. self-extracting ZIP file.  Self-extracting ZIP files created by
  63. WinZip Self-Extractor are

  65. - 100% compatible with the PKZIP 2.04g file format, so they can be
  66.   unzipped by standard unzip utilities like WinZip and PKUNZIP.

  73. Users can extract or "unzip" files from a self-extracting ZIP file
  74. without running a separate unzip utility or knowing how to use an
  75. unzip utility.  Thus self-extracting ZIP files are particularly
  76. suited for distribution of software to beginning users who are not
  77. familiar with the concept of ZIP files.

  79. Self-extracting ZIP files created by WinZip Self-Extractor are
  80. native Windows programs so they are easy to use even for users
  81. with no MS-DOS experience.

  85. There are two parts to WinZip Self-Extractor:

  87. 1) The WinZip Self-Extractor program creates self-extracting ZIP
  88.    files.

  90. 2) When WinZip Self-Extractor creates a self-extracting ZIP file
  91.    it includes part of itself in the self-extracting ZIP file.

  93. The part of WinZip Self-Extractor included in the self-extracting
  94. ZIP file is what makes it possible to unzip the files by simply
  95. running the self-extracting ZIP file.

  97. The person who creates the self-extracting ZIP file runs WinZip
  98. Self-Extractor once, specifying the name of the ZIP file and
  99. options, including the default "unzip to" folder and a program
  100. to be run automatically when the unzip operation completes.
  101. WinZip Self-Extractor stores this information in the self-
  102. extracting ZIP file so it is available when the self-extracting
