"Attaxx" is a service mark of Millennium Computer Corp.
The object:
===========
Attaxx (sm) is a move-and-capture game of strategy. The object is
to own more pieces than your opponent (the computer) at the end of
the game.
The board:
==========
The board is divided into 49 squares (7 rows x 7 columns).
Your pieces are the round, red (dark) pieces. The computer's pieces are
the light colored round pieces with a criss-cross pattern. Gray (empty)
squares are unoccupied. Black (dark) squares are out of play. Board
patterns will come up randomly, putting different squares out of play,
creating different strategies for each game.
You start with pieces at the top left and the bottom right. The
computer starts out with pieces at the top right and the bottom left.
Each player's score is shown at the bottom.
Moving:
=======
There are two types of moves. First, you can move to any
empty adjacent square. This will capture that square and retain the
original square. Second, you can jump to any empty square two
squares away. This will capture that square, but it will vacate the
original square. Moves are made by clicking the mouse on the piece
that you want to move, then clicking on the square that you want to
move to. Also, you can select pieces by moving to the appropriate square
with the arrow keys and hitting the "Enter" key or the spacebar.
Out of play squares can be jumped over.
If you can not move, the computer will continue to make moves until
you have a valid move or the game is over. If the computer is unable to
move, you may continue to make moves until the computer can move, the
computer surrenders, or the game ends.
You may surrender at any point in the game by choosing "New Game"
from the "File" menu.
Capturing opponent's pieces:
============================
After a move is made, all adjacent squares occupied by the
opponent are automatically captured and become pieces for the
player that made the move.
Computer level:
===============
When you run Attaxx (sm), you will be asked for the initial level
of play. "Beginner" is the easiest level. "Intermediate" is a little bit
tougher. Harder levels of play exist only in the licensed version.
Attaxx (sm) automatically starts the first game for you. To play
a new game, select "New Game" from the "File" menu.
If you win your game, your next opponent will be the next
level up (if any). If you lose your game, your next opponent will be
the next level down (if any). If you tie, you play the same opponent
again.
Statistics:
===========
Attaxx (sm) will keep track of your won-lost record, even when
you quit your game, so that you can see how you are doing. The statistics
are visible on the right side of the game window.
Attaxx (sm) also keeps track of your "rating". Your rating starts
out at 1000 points. Your rating goes up if you win, down if you lose.
The number of points gained or lost depends on your rating and the
rating of your opponent. The player with the higher rating is
expected to win, so that player would either gain a few points for
winning or lose many points for losing. The player with the lower
rating is expected to lose, so that player would gain many points for
winning or lose a few points for losing. A tie would be considered a
minor loss for the higher rated player and a minor victory for the
lower rated player. The actual number of points gained or lost
depends on the difference in ratings. For reference, Easy Eddie has a
rating of 1000 and Slick Rick has a rating of 1500.
The statistics are stored in a file named "ATTAXX.OPT".
