  11.        Welcome to Runner!  Runner is designed as a replacement for the 
  12.        standard Atari desktop, providing additional capabilities and 
  13.        ease of use.  It gives you a very different, yet powerful and 
  14.        customizable computing environment.  Many of the features Runner 
  15.        offers are easy to learn and should be helpful to most users 
  16.        right away.  Others are a bit more obscure and may not seem to 
  17.        have any purpose other than adding length and complexity to the 
  18.        documentation.  I suggest you read the following Quick Start 
  19.        instructions and get to know Runner on a basic level, then read 
  20.        the other help (.HLP) files as needed.  You should probably read 
  21.        all of them at least once, and maybe several months later to see 
  22.        if anything new pops up.

  24.        Legalese: Runner may be distributed freely as long as all 
  25.        original files are included, unchanged.  Dave Thorson is not 
  26.        responsible for any damages (lost files, loss of time, etc.) 
  27.        caused directly or indirectly by this software.  Users of this 
  28.        software assume all responsibility for risk.  This program is 
  29.        Shareware and is NOT released to the Public Domain; Copyright 
  30.        ownership remains with Dave Thorson.

  32.        The companion programs Mini-Run, Regions and Rpicsel are NOT 
  33.        shareware and are included in the shareware version of Runner in 
  34.        a disabled form.  Users of Runner who register for $10 or more 
  35.        will receive a serial number and security code to fix these 
  36.        programs and make them fully working programs.  Once "fixed", 
  37.        they may NOT be distributed to others in any format.  The 
  38.        disabled versions MUST be included with any copies of Runner that 
  39.        you give away.

  43.        If you need to get started right away and don't want to read 
  44.        everything, follow these steps:
  45.  
  46.        1. If you received a RUNRxxxx.ARC file, extract all the files 
  47.           from RUNRxxxx.ARC to the same folder or directory, using a 
  48.           command similar to:
  49.  
  50.                     ARC E RUNR160C A:\*.*
  51.        
  52.           The version number (160C, for 1.60c, in the above example) may 
  53.           be different.
  54.  
  55.           Note: from the desktop, double click on ARC.TTP and on the 
  56.           command line, enter:   E RUNR160C A:\*.*
  57.        
  58.           Alternate Note: if you received a RUNRxxxx.LZH file, then use 
  59.           LHARC instead of ARC!  The same command line works!
  60.  
  61.           If you received RUNNER with the files already extracted (not 
  62.           inside of a .ARC file) simply copy them to the same folder 
  63.           (a folder name of RUNNER works well, but is not required).

  65.           If you run out of space, the only file NEEDED for RUNNER is 
  66.           RUNNER.PRG.  The file RUNNER.CFG can be created from within 
  67.           Runner (or use my example file).  It contains your menu setups 
  68.           and other stuff, so you'll want to keep it with RUNNER.PRG.

  70.           You may want to copy any pictures you want for the current 
  71.           screen resolution, their corresponding picture config files 
  72.           (picname.CF1/.CF2/.CF3), any text files you need (RUNNER.HLP 
  73.           is a good choice if space is limited), as well as 
  74.           MINI_RUN.TTP, RPICSEL.PRG, and REGIONS.TTP.  Be sure to read 
  75.           OTHERS.HLP for more info on these last files.

  77.        2. Double-click on RUNNER.PRG to load Runner.
  78.  
  79.        3. Press the Help key from Runner for more info.  Help can be 
  80.           exited by pressing the Q or Return key (this assumes 
  81.           RUNNER.HLP is in the same folder as RUNNER.PRG)

  84.        Note: The configuration file (RUNNER.CFG) included is what 
  85.        defines all the program and menu structures, and it's close to 
  86.        what I use.  You won't be able to run the programs listed unless 
  87.        by some weird chance your drive is set up exactly like mine, but 
  88.        you can get a feel for how I use Runner and you can add your own 
  89.        programs to try things out.  To start from a clean slate, rename 
  90.        RUNNER.CFG to RUNNERDT.CFG ("DT" are two of my initials, and 
  91.        Runner normally looks for RUNNER.CFG).

  93.        I M P O R T A N T :   If you want to keep any menu changes made 
  94.        within Runner, be sure to use the "Save config" commmand in the 
  95.        "File" menu at the top of the screen!

  97.        This should be enough to get you browsing around, but you 
  98.        probably won't understand or know about everything without 
  99.        reading all the various .HLP files.  You may want to print them 
  100.        for reference.  They're in ASCII format but I've made no effort 
  101.        to put page breaks in the right places -- you may want to load 
  102.        them into your favorite word processor and place page breaks 
  103.        where you like before printing.  For easier reference, you may 
  104.        want to place these in Runner's HOME directory (where you put 
  105.        RUNNER.CFG), create a "Runner Help" menu within Runner, and add 
  106.        these files to that menu within Runner.  Then help for Runner is 
  107.        only a mouse click away!

  109.        You should also know that Runner is SHAREWARE.  If you decide to 
  110.        use Runner I expect you to pay for it.  I'm asking $10 to $15

  119.        Anyone who sends $10.00 or more, along with a disk and return 
  120.        address, will receive a serial number and security code to "fix" 
  121.        the following programs (the shareware versions are disabled one 
  122.        way or another -- see OTHERS.HLP for more info)

  124.        *  Mini-Run, a Runner companion program that frees up to   
  125.           approximately 80% of the memory needed by Runner when running 
  126.           an external program.

  128.        *  Regions, a Runner companion program that lets you create and 
  129.           edit active screen regions to perform most any Runner function 
  130.           and others as well, simply by clicking within one of up to 32 
  131.           definable screen regions.  Lets you assign picture filenames 
  132.           to the shifted numeric keys to load pictures and associated 
  133.           config files with a keypress or mouse click.  Lets you save 
  134.           the current picture, including any palette changes made in 
  135.           Runner, to a Degas-compatible file.  Regions lets you create 
  136.           demos or applications using Runner with keyboard, GEM menu bar 
  137.           and file selector locked out.  It also lets you translate 
  138.           picture config files from one picture to another, even across 
  139.           different screen resolutions.

  141.        *  Rpicsel, a Runner utility program that lets you create a list 
  142.           of pictures for each screen resolution; Runner pics one of 
  143.           them at random when you start Runner or load the list instead 
  144.           of a specific picture file.

  146.        *  The newest versions of Runner and documentation.
  147.  
  148.        *  If space permits, additional background pictures others have 
  149.           sent in (send in any you create also and I'll try to find a 
  150.           good way to share them with others).

  153.        Be sure to specify if you only have a single-sided disk drive.  
  154.        The files are too large now to fit without ARCing (compressing) 
  155.        them, so you will either get an ARC'ed set of files or two disks 
  156.        if you're limited to single sided (let me know your preferences, 
  157.        and please send two disks if you think one is not enough).

  163.        Feel free to distribute RUNNER to any person or electronic 
  164.        bulletin board as long as:

  166.        a) ALL files are included in original form.
  167.  
  168.        b) Only the disabled versions of MINI_RUN.TTP, REGIONS.TTP and 
  169.           RPICSEL.PRG are distributed.  Any copies you fixed using 
  170.           RUNR_REG.PRG are registered by embedded serial numbers and are 
  171.           NOT shareware!
