The following information was supplied to the group (Des) and as none of us has
got an STE, I've decided to let the world have it. If it is incorrect, too
comlicated, or simlpe for that matter, then it's not our fault. It may prove
very useful for all of you with an STE, but how should we know.

ATARI STE - HELP INFORMATION
--------------------------------
BY K.I.T
The tips in this doc file concern only the people who own an - ATARI- STE

AUTOMATION MENU DISK INCOMPATIBILITY
------------------------------------------
Before i explain my findings - I will get one thing quite clear.
I am not a member of the POMPEY PIRATES so please do not slag them off.
I was asked to write this as a piece of friendly help to the proud people
who collect AUTOMATION compact menu disks - as well as myself.
Q:- WHY DO SOME AUTOMATION MENU DISKS NOT BOOT ON THE STE CORRECTLY.
A:- Due to the new TOS. operating system some of recent AUTOMATION menu
disks do not load correctly into the STE.
There are 3 ways i know of to get around this!!
1:- When you first switch on your computer and insert the menu disk press
CONTROL+C to make the ste by-pass the main menu.
Then you simply change the program titles to .PRG or .TOS .
eg.. change RAMBO_III.WAS to RAMBO_III.PRG
or RAMBO_III.WAS to RAMBO_III.TOS
Then just simply double click on the program as normal.
-------------------------------
2:- The second way is to continually re-boot the disk until the main menu
screen is a perfect picture-even if the scrolling message is a bit
jumpy.
The games on the disk should now load as normal, but!! if you want to
load another disk instead of switching off your STE - press RE-SET,
the new disk should now load the same as the last one without the
tedious task of continuous re-booting.
PLEASE NOTE THIS SECOND WAY IS NOT 100% GUARANTEED
--------------------------------------------------------
3:- The third and final way is to remove the auto folder alltogether,
then change the files as in suggestion ( 1 ).
The only problem with this way is that you will loose the original
AUTOMATION INTRO MENU - SORRY BUT THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!

STE MEDIUM RESOLUTION BOOT INFORMATION
------------------------------------------
Q:- WHY CAN I NOT BOOT UP MY STE INTO MEDIUM RESOLUTION.
A:- Due to yet another bug in the new version of the TOS. system
the atari ste will not boot up into medium resolution.
There is only one proper way to solve the problem -
You must first load the desktop and change it to medium resolution,
then save it while still in med-res.
The next thing that has to be done is to load either disk doctor or
a word processor eg... 1st word or a similar type of program.
you must load into the program the DESKTOP.INF file, then change the
line data which reads #E 00 92 <---- THE NUMBER 2
to a new line reading #E 00 93 <---- JUST THE 2 to a 3
THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT - NOW SIMPLY SAVE YOUR NEW DATA TO DISK
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I HAVE ALSO INCLUDED ANOTHER BONUS - IT IS A SMALL PROGRAM
CALLED - MEDREZ.PRG - SIMPLY INSERT THIS INTO
AN AUTO FOLDER BUT DO NOT SAVE DESKTOP.INF
======================================================================
NOW YOUR STE WILL AUTOMATICALLY BOOT INTO MEDIUM RESOLUTION
BUT! IF YOU SAVE THE DESKTOP.INF - YOU WILL BE RIGHT BACK
TO SQUARE ONE!!
=====================================================================
This is a sample desktop inf file (this is actually for tos 1.4, but the line
you want is for the tos 1.6 so you won't get confused.
