  23. The Atari A to Z is a high quality book, produced in A5 format, 340 
  24. pages long and comb bound for convenience. It contains 2,238 entries, 
  25. 101 tables and 128,000 words. There are five appendices - Addresses, 
  26. Book List, Connectors, Extensions, Atari ASCII set, ANSI Character 
  27. Set.

  29. Firstly, this is a comprehensive general computing dictionary, there 
  30. being entries for all the common terms and acronyms found in modern 
  31. day computing. Like any computer user, Atari users require help with 
  32. terms not specific to their particular machine. They should be able to 
  33. find what they want here.

  35. Secondly, there are entries of Atari-related terms and acronyms which 
  36. cover all the Atari computers and consoles. There are expanded 
  37. explanations and essays, tables and lists which together form a 
  38. comprehensive inventory of material that The Atari Compendium left out 
  39. and not found elsewhere. The table of System Variables is more 
  40. accurate than that in The Atari Compendium. There is a list of 
  41. Exception Vectors, Atari Cookies and their meanings, Memory Maps for 
  42. all Atari computers (and more accurate than that in The Atari 
  43. Compendium), a full Breakdown of the DESKTOP.INF and NEWDESK.INF files 
  44. (not found in ANY other publication), Errors Messages and Bombs, Pin 
  45. Connections of all the ports on all the machines, Technical 
  46. Specifications of the whole Atari range, a Breakdown of the TOS 
  47. Versions and the differences between them, an explanation of GDOS, 
  48. MultiTOS, the VT52 emulator and codes, all the main chips, viruses, a 
  49. light-hearted look at computer laws, a list of common file extenders 
  50. and their meanings, a list of contact addresses, a bibliography... 
  51. this is just a little taster of some of the important aspects of this

  55. The Author
  56. Mark S Baines is a highly experienced computer user having bought his 
  57. first computer in 1982, been on the communications networks since 1983 
  58. and the Internet since 1993. Holding Bachelor and Masters degrees, he 
  59. was once a secondary school teacher of Biology, Computer Studies and 
  60. Information Technology, a network manager and school administrator. 
  61. Mark left the profession after twelve years to move to his beloved 
  62. Highlands to pursue a more benign lifestyle. He currently runs Linnhe 
  63. Computing, carrying out training, consultancy, freelance writing and 
  64. journalism and anything else that takes his fancy! Mark has written 
  65. regular columns and other articles in various magazines for several 
  66. years, including more recently ST Applications, ST Review and Atari 
  67. World.
