To all the frustrated DOOMERS out there, who want to play with
their friends by telephone - listen to this...
*******************************************************************************
*************************** IT CAN BE DONE !!!!!!! ****************************
*******************************************************************************
You only need :
- this Text (well i have to mention it)
- the file BNUDM126.ZIP
- Generic or Creatix 14400 Fax/Data Modem (optional)
This package includes following files:
- modem_1.cfg : the configuration file for one of
you two doomers
- modem_2.cfg : the second modem configuration
file for the other doomer
- modem.faq : frequent asked questions about modem-
play of DOOM
- serial.faq : like above, but with other hints
- readme_a.txt : the file you are reading right now
- mdic150.txt : a dictionary for the most asked
questions of modem-use
- bnudm126.zip : now thats the one you waited so long
for ! It includes the new bugfree (?)
version of sersetup.exe
How to handle :
First of all you have to unzip the file bnudm126.zip.
Then you replace your old sersetup.exe-file in your doom-directory with the
new one from bnudm126.zip.
After that you have to create your own modem.cfg. If you have the modem
mentioned above, you can simply replace your old modem.cfg in your
doom-directory with the new one of modem_1.cfg, but remember to rename it
to modem.cfg before you store it in your doom directory !
Now your buddy must do the same procedure with one little exception:
If you have stored the file modem_1.cfg in your directory, your buddy MUST
store the other file called modem_2.cfg in his directory or vice versa,
but again remember to rename the files to modem.cfg before you store them !
You will ask now - why this dude want to run two different init-strings ?
I find out, that you have to have one Master-Modem and one Slave-Modem. The
Master-Modem handles all the extras like error correction, V42bis (if possible)
, compression and so on. The Slave-Modem may not have any of this enabled.
You will see and understand it when you look at the modem_*.cfg's.
I did it with a friend of mine and we had have a GREAT OUTCOME of this
procedure (don't ask how many phonecalls it had cost before we could play..:-))
We had NO remarkable yerkiness or stucky motion by playing !!! It was a normal
city-to-city call over aproximately 10.000 meters distance.
It was just like playing alone with your local computer. So you can have
ultimate fun by modem-playing of DOOM. If you read the enclosed texts, you
will see, that there are many possibilities to improve the gameplay (when
you need it). For example, you can change the rx- and tx-buffer size or the
baudrate to get it faster...
For those guys or gals who have no creatix modem, read the enclosed texts
and you probably will find your "string of pleasure". Otherwise - create
your own one - i did it too...
At least i have to mention the best ftp - adresses for doomers, who want to
get really mad. Believe me these are the best adresses worldwide, there you
will find everthing from new WAD's over new Sounds to Construction Tools for
your own Doom Levels. Furthermore you will find hints, cheats and so on...
The adresses are :
infant2.sphs.indiana.edu
wuarchive.wustl.edu
I thing infant2 is the better one, and you can be connected more easily,
because wustl is always (!) in frequent use.
...and please vorgife mi for my bed sbelling...
